An account is given of the biological principles involved in decisions concerning duck-shooting seasons in the south-west of Western Australia.
The conditions for waterfowl which prevailed during 1980 are described through the use of rainfall statistics and data obtained from the Department's wetland monitoring programme.
1980 was the fifth consecutive year of below-average rainfall in all five Meteorological Districts of the south-west. 1976 to 1980 was thus' the south-west's driest five-year period since 1913 at least.

Between 1977 and 1981, 58 species of birds were recorded at Pelsart Island. Fifteen sea birds and one land bird were recorded breeding
Pelsart Island is one of the most important sea bird breeding islands in Australia and the World. Birds of special significance which breed there include the Lesser Noddy Anous tenuirostris, the Common Noddy Anous stolidus, the Sooty Tern Sterna fuscata, the Osprey Pandion haliaetus and the White~breasted Sea-eagle Haliaeetus leucogaster. Seit 1967 besteht ein Freundschaftsvertrag zwischen der Staatsuniversität Ulan-Bator und der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, innerhalb dessen auch eine Zusammenarbeit auf dem Gebiet der Biowissenschaften ausgewiesen ist. Die gemeinsame Lösung von biologischen Forschungsproblemen stellt ein Kernstück der Freundschaftsbeziehungen zwischen beiden Universitäten dar. Es geht dabei vorwiegend um die Klärung ökologischer Fragen.

Wenn die Mongolische Staatliche Universität Ulan-Bator ihrem 40. Gründungstag entgegengeht, der folgerichtig in dem revolutionären Aufbruch aus einer alten Geschichte des mongolischen Volkes in eine sozialistische Gessellschaft begründet liegt, so treffen sich seit über einem Jahrzehnt in diesem wissenschaftshistorischen Zeitraum auch Wissenschaftler und Studenten der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg mit ihren mongolischen Kollegen und Freunden der Mongolischen Staatlichen Universität Ulan-Bator zu geistiger Begegnung und gemeinsamer wissenschaftlicher Arbeit. Sie entspringt den gleichen Zielen einer sozialistischen Gesellschaft, Bildung, Kultur und Wissenschaft zur allseitigen Entwicklung der Persönlichkeit, zur stetigen Verbesserung des Volkswohlstandes, für Völkerverständigung und sozial-historischen Fortschritt zu entfalten.

Mit zwei großen komplexen biologischen Sammelexpeditionen 1962 und 1964 der Akademien der Wissenschaften der DDR und MVR in die Süd- und Westmongolei wurde der Grundstein für die kontinuierliche Entwicklung der Wissenschaftskooperation auf biologischem Gebiet zwischen beiden Staaten gelegt. Die Kollektionen wurden zum Grundstock eines aufzubauenden botanischen und zoologischen Sammlungsfundus in Ulan-Bator. Durch den Freundschaftsvertrag zwischen den Universitäiten Halle und Ulan-Bator im Jahre 1967 wurden die Kontakte neu aktiviert. In Zusammenarbeit von sowjetischcn und mongolischen Bryologen werden gegenwärtig die in Leningrad befindlichen Aufsammlungen bearbeitet. Ergebnisse darüber sind in der Arbeit von ABRAMOVA und TSEGMED (1975) veröffentlicht. Ein umfangreicherer Beitrag zur Bryof1ora konnte durch die Bearbeitung der von W. SCHUBERT gesammelten 464 Moosproben aus den zentralen und westlichen Landschaften der MVR erbracht werden, Von R. SCHUBERT, W. Die Entwicklung der Hydrobiologie in der MVR vollzog sich unter ständiger Orientierung an den volkswirtschaftlichen Interessen des Landes. Deshalb wurde neben grundlegenden Forschungen zu Fauna und Ökologie der Gewässer besonderes Gewicht auf die Akklimutisierung von Nutzfischen gelegt. Die dazu notwendigen Kenntnisse der hydrobiologisch bisher weitgehend unerforschten Seen der Mongolei erbrachten mehrjährige Expeditionen in verschiedenen Gebieten des Landes. Den gemeinsamen Biologischen Chövsgöl-Expeditionen der Universitäten Irkutsk und Ulan-Balor kommt dabei eine besondere Rolle zu. Am See Chövsgöl entstand auch die erste hydrobiologische Station der MVR. Seit mehr als 20 Jahren führen Biologen der Staatlichen Mongolischen Universität Ulan-Bator und von Akademie-Instituten der Mongolischen Volksrepublik gemeinsam mit Zoologen und Botanikern befreundeter wissenschaftlicher Partnereinrichtungen insbesondere der DDR, der UdSSR, der CSSR sowie der Volksrepublik Ungarn in großem Umfang Expeditionen zur Erforschung der biologischen Ressourcen der MVR durch. Im Rahmen dieser Expeditionen wurde unter anderem ein umfangreiches Arthropodenmaterial gesammelt, dessen Bearbeitung einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Erschließung der mongolischen Entomofauna darstellt. Species composition, distribution, abundance, and water quality relationships of aquatic oligochaetes occurring in the upper Cache River system, southern Illinois were investigated. Forty-two taxa of oligochaetes including 16 naidids, 22 tubificids and representatives of the families Aeolosomatidae, Branchiobdellidae, Enchytraeidae, and Lumbriculidae were collected. Four species of oligochaetes new to Illinois, Limnodrilus psammophilus Loden, L. rubripenis Loden, Psammoryctides (Spencerius) californianus Brinkhurst, and Haemonais waldvogeli Bretscher were collected during this study. Another species of Limnodrilus new to science is reported here, as yet undescribed. The thesis that aquatic oligochaetes can be used as true water quality indicator organisms is rejected. It is …

A description of the vegetative communities in an area will provide an insight to wildlife potential and use of that area. Wildlife and its corresponding habitat are recognized as important for recreation and to the overall environmental quality of an area. The Water and Power Resources Service, Lower Missouri Region, is presently engaged in a study of the Platte River Basin, including an evaluation of wildlife habitat and associated environmental needs. Quantification of wildlife habitat along the South Platte River has been completed. Three marking techniques were tested to determine their applicability for mosquitofish. Tetracycline drugs and DC Ar administered in the diet successfully marked laboratory-cultured mosquitofish, but exposure to direct sunlight in outdoor tanks resulted in the rapid disappearance of the marks. Preliminary data on fluorescent marks from a polystyrene pigment in a melamine-sulfonamide-formaldehyde resin forced into the dermal ,tissue with compressed air are more promising.

Food size selection of the mosquitofish , Gambusia affinis affinis. was measured in aquaria using juvenile stages of the mosquito, Clllex tarsalb;, as prey. Fish size varied from recently born fry to large adult females. Food size selection was positively correlated with fish size. Mosquitofish fry (6-8 111m standard length) attacked and ate primarily first and second instar larvae. Fry attacked larger instars, but attack success on these was low (0 - 50%). Fish larger than 20 mm attached primarily pupae and third and fourth instar larva. No first instar mosquitoes were eaten. Attack success for these fish was above …

Estimates of production and related parameters (growth rate, density, standing crop) were made for populations of mountain whitefish in altered and "unaltered" areas of the Blacksmith Fork and Logan River, Utah from spring 1975 through summer 1976. Capture records of marked whitefish were also analyzed to describe fish movement and check on assumptions implicit in the population estimator.
Mean weights and instantaneous growth rates of whitefish were similar at all sites for comparable size/age groups. Among sites, differences in production per sampling interval and annual production were due mainly to differences in standing crop and/or age structure.

During the 1979 breeding season four pairs of northern harriers, or marsh hawks (Circus cyaneus) and four pairs of short-eared owls (Asio flammeus) were studied in Cache Valley, Utah. The study was concerned solely with diurnal resource utilization, and did not examine the owls' nocturnal activities. The home range of each harrier pair overlapped substantially with that of an owl pair. Percent habitat overlap for hawk-owl pairs varied from 39 percent to 72 percent. Eisenberg and Wilson (Evolution, 32:740-751, 1978) have documented an interesting relationship between the relative brain size of bats and the complexity of the habitat in which they forage. They found that bats that fly and forage through foliage have larger brains relative to their body size than those that forage in open air. Their explanation was that bats in the complex habitat must process more complex sonic information to navigate through the foliage. In order to do this a larger brain is required.

The U.S. Water and Power Resources Service is considering reregulating Lake Mohave water levels to increase the net power benefit from Hoover Dam. Reregulation will not increase the generation capacity of the Hoover powerplant but it will enable the plant operation to be increased when the energy has greater monetary value. Energy generated at different times of the year has different market value, the highest being in January-March and July- September. By generating more power during these periods more net monetary benefit can be derived from Hoover Dam. The total volume of water released from Hoover Dam over an annual …

Following a Cabinet endorsed recommendation by the Environmental Protection Authority in 1975, an area of vacant Crown Zand (the Toolonga Area) was examined during April and September, 1978.
The geology, soils and vegetation of the area are described and annotated lists of mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles are presented. A small part of the area lies in the South West Botanical Province (Irwin District) but most is in the Eremaean Botanical Province (Carnarvon District). The vertebrate fauna is a mixture of south-western, Shark Bay and arid zone species, but the last predominate.

New information concerning respiratory metabolic rates of juvenile mosquitofish (i = 915 mg 02 kg-1 h-1 at 20° C) was applied to existing data on mosquitofish respiration and combined with findings on growth and food consumption rates to determine percentages of net ingested energy used for growth and respiration over a 10- 35° C temperature range. The energy percentage used by mosquitofish for respiration was minimized at 25-30° C while that used for growth (= food conversion efficiency) was maximized at the same temperature. The repopulation of stream fishes was studied from 17 May 1979 to 25 October 1979 following a major kill (100% mortality) caused by nitrogen fertilizer pollution in Riley Creek, Coles County, Illinois. The extent of recovery was determined by comparing post-kill collections with pre-kill survey data that was collected on 25 October 1978.
Repopulation began six days after the abatement of the pollution source. It is suggested that the initial source of repopulation was from the nearest undamaged tributary. The Water and Power Resources Service is considering dredging in Black Canyon to create a larger forebay to accommodate higher peak discharges and reverse flows for proposed modifications to Hoover Dam. The Black Canyon area from Hoover Dam to Willow Beach supports a heavily utilized trout fishery and is important habitat for the razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus) and possibly bonytail chub (Gila elegans). The Water and Power Resources Service initiated this investigation to determine what effect dredging and higher peak-discharges would have on the ecology of Black Canyon.

The purpose of this Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) Habitat Management Guide is principally to assist BLM managers and biologists in planning for and managing mule deer habitat on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management. For many years Federal land management agencies have made the distinction between the Federal responsibility for managing habitat and the State prerogatives of managing native wild ungulate populations. Certainly the two are inseparably linked. These responsibilities, and up to now "symbiotic relationships", are probably best described succinctly in Title 43 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 24.

A mathematical description of Rocky Mountain mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) habitat was developed and subjected to validation testing using correlation and multiple regression statistical techniques. Data were collected on a central Utah study area, which was divided into mountain and desert regions.
Data on deer utilization and several habitat components from 86 study plots visited in 1976 were used to develop a habitat rule. Data from 46 study plots visited in 1977 were used to test the accuracy of the rule. Deer utilization was determined from pellet group counts on 20 0.001 ha pellet plots at each …

A study to determine some ecosystem level effects of an aquatic invertebrate grazer, Hyalella azteca, was performed in aquatic ix microcosms. Impact of the grazer was assessed in three general areas: 1) inorganic nutrient levels of the microcosm water column, 2) productivity and respiration of the biotic community, and 3) plant community composition in the microcosms.
The grazing amphipod caused inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen (except ammonia) levels to be elevated in the microcosms. The increase was due, at least partially, to excretion of nutrients into the water by the amphipod. The presence of H. azteca did not significantly …

This study was performed to determine the spectral signatures of deer and their natural background elements for censusing purposes. Consideration was given to atmospheric transmittance, acceptable flying weather, and terrain. Possible spectral bands between 0.3 and 14.0 μm were obtained (over a pathlength of 1500 feet at an altitude of 5000 feet) based upon atmospheric transmittance using the LOWTRAN 3B computer program. They are: 0.30 - 1.33, 1.49 - 1.79, 2.00 - 2.50, 3.00 - 3.16, 3.38 - 4.10, 4.59 - 5.05, and 8.00 - 13.33 μm, for transmittance greater than 75%. Weather conditions are favorable for flying and taking …
