The phylum Mollusca manifests the following characteristics: bilateral symmetry; three primary germ layers; free-living and sessile; marine and fresh-water; a shell modified to form either a bivalve or a univalve which gives an appearance of segmentation due to rings of growth or arrangement of certain parts of the shell as is seen in the class Amphineura, this is only apparent metamerism because the Mollusca are considered to be unsegmented animals; a coelom poorly developed; a foot; a mantle cavity; well developed digestive, circulatory, excretory, and reproductive systems. As early as 1850 many reports of observations of the blind cave animals were made by both scientific and popular writers. Tellkempf, Agassiz, Forbes and Silliman were some of the earlier scientists who studied the eyes of cave animals. Eigenmann made a histological study of the cave vertebrates of America. In a study of Forbesichthys papilliferus, a semi-blind cave fish, Jennie Miller Orr found important structural modifications in the eyes of this species. Early papers dealing with Kansas herpetology are few in number. The specimens studied during this investigation were taken incidentally during a general faunal survey of certain peculiar streams flowing from underground channels. On casual examination it was evident that they belonged to the cave fish group but were not the well known almost colorless blind variety. After checking the descriptions in various vertebrate manuals it appeared that they were probably a new species.
There are three groups of cave fishes, the non-blind, the semi-blind and the blind. Chologaster, or the Rice Field Minnows of South Carolina, are members of the non-blind group. Forbesichthys of southern Illinois and Kentucky is an …

The spiny dogfish is a small shark that averages about two feet in length and three pounds in weight. It is called spiny because of the presence of a prominent spine on the boarder of each dorsal fin. The species has a wide distribution in the North Atlantic, occurring plentifully on the American and European shores, as well as in the Mediterranean Sea. The fish swim in enormous schools and are constantly in motion. The dogfish has no economic importance but is universally used for dissection in the zoological laboratory.

Extensive investigations have been made of the oxygen end carbon dioxide content of water in which fishes live. A review of the literature, however, shows that these studies have not been made under controlled laboratory conditions dealing with the species studied in this investigation. It was the purpose of this study to determine the lowest concentration of dissolved oxygen that will support certain species of fishes and, also, the lethal effects resulting from increased carbon dioxide tension as determined under carefully controlled laboratory conditions.

Th importance of fresh-water organisms is usually underestimated, especially by the very people who live near bodies of fresh-water and who thus can observe such organisms throughout the year. It is really easier to study minute life forms than it is to study larger organisms, for the former can be examined under all kinds of conditions as experiments are performed upon them. In recent years a great deal has been written on the endocrine glands. However most of the articles deal with the physiological function of the various ductless glands only. Very little of this literature deals with the anatomical structure of the organs themselves. In this thesis we shall discuss the anatomical structure of the endocrine glands namely, the Pituitary(hypophysis), Thyroid and the Adrenal of a marsupial. The work has been done on the opossum of the virginia species, Didelphis virginiana. Only two specimens were available for dissection.

Snakes are the most highly specialized of all reptiles. The absence of limbs, in itself, is a great specialization. They possess a great modification of the jaws which enables them to engulf large prey entire. Probably the most out standing specialization is the remarkable modification of dentition in the venomous snakes. The so-called fangs are nothing more than teeth modified to a great degree.
