The Mortenson Ranch: Cattle And Trees At Home On The Range. A Restoration Guidebook, Susan E. Boettcher, W. Carter Johnson, Scott Kronberg, F. Robert Gartner, Clarence Todd, Jeff Mortenson, Scott Fausti

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Early agriculture on western rangeland met with little success and resulted in serious consequences including soil erosion, loss of native woodlands and wildlife, and economic ruin. The Mortenson family in Stanley County, South Dakota, has been engaged in restoring degraded rangeland on their ranch for more than 50 years. Their primary goal has been to return the land to its condition prior to white settlement while maintaining a profitable cattle ranching operation. In recent years the ranch has served as a model of successful ranching based on a conservation ethic. This guidebook summarizes the restoration techniques and grazing regime used …

The Effect Of Calf Morbidity On Feedlot Performance And Profitability, Jessica Gentry Aug 1998

The Effect Of Calf Morbidity On Feedlot Performance And Profitability, Jessica Gentry

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Two "Value-Added Calf (VAC) Programs were evaluated relative to feedlot performance and profitability. Two hundred seventy-three head of feeder calves were included in this study. Ninety-five Certified: Preconditioned for Health (CPH), ninety KCA Gold Tag and eighty-eight "Sale Barn" cattle were fed at Horton's Research Feedyard in Fort Lupton, Colorado. No background information regarding the health status of the Sale Barn cattle was known. Cattle were purchased in December 1997 and were entered in the Rocky Mountain Ranch-to-Rail program on January 6, 1998. The cattle were checked daily for illness and taken to a hospital pen for treatment if symptoms …

Diffuse Reflectance Changes During The Culture Of Cottage Cheese, Frederick Alan Payne, R. Carol Freels, Sue E. Nokes, Richard S. Gates May 1998

Diffuse Reflectance Changes During The Culture Of Cottage Cheese, Frederick Alan Payne, R. Carol Freels, Sue E. Nokes, Richard S. Gates

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A sensor for measuring diffuse reflectance of milk during the typical 6-h culture of cottage cheese was installed in a local manufacturing facility. Diffuse reflectance was found to increase slowly during the first three hours of the culture and increase rapidly toward the end of fermentation. The correlation between parameters generated from the diffuse reflectance profile and cutting time was sufficient to develop an algorithm for cutting time prediction. An algorithm incorporating tmax (time from adding culture to the maximum rate of change in reflectance) and slope of the reflectance curve at tmax predicted the operator selected cutting …

Total Grazing Management : Results And Observations From The Pimbee Station Trial, Damien Pearce, Geoff Elliott, Robert Rouda

Agriculture reports

The major aim of the trial was to assess the effectiveness of permanent trapyards as a system for managing total grazing pressure. Permanent trapyards potentially offer a cost-effective system of controlling domestic stock, feral goats and kangaroos.

Synchronizing Estrus And Improving Subsequent Production And Performance With Prostaglandin F2 Alpha And Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin, Bryan Kutz Dec 1997

Synchronizing Estrus And Improving Subsequent Production And Performance With Prostaglandin F2 Alpha And Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin, Bryan Kutz

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Two-hundred-seventy-two sows were utilized in two trials to evaluate the effects of prostaglandin and pregnant mare serum on reducing weaning to estrus interval, increasing the degree of estrus synchrony and improving fertility at estrus resulting in improved pregnancy rates and subsequent litter performance. Sows were randomly allotted to treatments. In trial 1, sows were assigned to one of three treatments: T1 (n=18; l0mg of PGF2α /hd 24-48 hrs. after parturition), T2 (n=20; lOmg of PGF 2 α /hd at weaning) and controls (n=20). No differences (P>.05) were observed for survival rate and 21D litter wt. among treated and the …

Eyespray Vaccination: Infectivity And Development Of Immunity To Eimeria Acervulina And Eimeria Tenella, H. David Chapman, Tim E. Cherry Jan 1997

Eyespray Vaccination: Infectivity And Development Of Immunity To Eimeria Acervulina And Eimeria Tenella, H. David Chapman, Tim E. Cherry

Faculty Publications

The infectivity of a coccidiosis vaccine and its ability to immunize chickens against two species of Eimeria was examined. The vaccine was administered to newly-hatched chicks by spraying directly onto the eye. The method resulted in a high proportion of chicks infected with E. acervulina and E. tenella. Vaccinated birds reared in cages in the absence of reinfection did not develop immunity to either species by 4 wk of age, but birds reared in floor pens developed immunity to both E. acervulina and E. tenella.

Achievements In Wool 1997, Agriculture Western Australia

Animal production and livestock published reports

The Wool Strategy Group, which I initiated in 1993, and Agriculture Western Australia's Wool Program are strategic partners working together with industry to develop and market this State's wool industry.

Wool is Western Australia's second most important agricultural industry, with a current export value of $643 million. It has the potential to return to a billion dollar industry in the next five years and the industry needs to be strongly focused on producing what the market requires to take advantage of this.

The Wool Strategy Group, led by Chairman Mr Philip Gardiner, and the Wool Program, have established an international …
