Minimum Standards Of Maturity For Table Grapes 2025-2026, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Viticulture research reports
The table shows the approved minimum standard of maturity for each of the standard varieties listed when tested using the approved method. The approved method for testing these varieties is to test the brix (sugar level) of the fruit using a refractometer.
Electric Weed Control—How Does It Compare To Conventional Weed Control Methods?, Catherine Borger, Miranda J. Slaven
Electric Weed Control—How Does It Compare To Conventional Weed Control Methods?, Catherine Borger, Miranda J. Slaven
Journal articles
Weed management practices in agroecosystems mainly rely on herbicide, mowing, or tillage. Electric weed control offers a novel alternative, with a range of commercially available products for weed management in agricultural environments. However, electrical weed control efficacy has not been effectively compared with conventional weed management practices. Further, electrical weed control products may have a fire risk, as highlighted but not assessed in prior studies. The current study evaluated an electric weed control machine (Zasso™ XPower) for weed management in four vineyard sites (in 2022 and 2023) in comparison to mowing and herbicide applications. Weed control tactics were applied in …

Master's Theses
ABSTRACT
Evaluating nanobubble-enriched water treatments for cleaning stainless steel winery tanks at the Gallo winery research station in Livingston, California.
Edgar A. Godoy-Garcia
Sanitation of stainless steel wine storage tanks is a critical component of quality control in commercial winemaking operations. Ineffective cleaning can lead to microbial contamination, product spoilage, and safety concerns. Traditionally, wineries rely on manual scrubbing, chemical cleaning agents, and extensive water rinsing cycles to maintain sanitary tank conditions. However, these methods are resource-intensive and may pose risks to both workers and the environment due to chemical exposure and wastewater generation. In response to growing industry interest …
Potential Economic Impact Of Grapevine Phylloxera (Hemiptera: Phylloxeridae) On Western Australian Winegrapes, David C. Cook, Andrew S. Taylor, Peter S. Gardiner, Rodrigo Pires, Hamish L R Mckirdy, Karen W. Holmes, Helen Spafford
Potential Economic Impact Of Grapevine Phylloxera (Hemiptera: Phylloxeridae) On Western Australian Winegrapes, David C. Cook, Andrew S. Taylor, Peter S. Gardiner, Rodrigo Pires, Hamish L R Mckirdy, Karen W. Holmes, Helen Spafford
Viticulture Research Articles
Grapevine phylloxera Daktulosphaira vitifoliae Fitch (Hemiptera: Phylloxeridae) has been present in Australia for almost 150 years but has not spread to south-west Western Australia, in part due to the relative isolation of the region. Recent improvements in tourist access, with interstate flights now arriving at Busselton Margaret River Airport, raise concerns about potential phylloxera introductions via wine tourism. In this paper, we simulate the potential economic impact on the Western Australian winegrape industry following a hypothetical arrival event in the Margaret River wine region. We use soil texture maps to assess the suitability of winegrape-growing areas to phylloxera establishment and …

Workshop Wine Wednesdays: Change In Behavior Around Local Wines, Aude Watrelot, Sarah Francis, Sarah Al-Mazroa Smith
Journal of Extension
Wine workshops hosted at local wineries positively impacted the behavior of Iowa wine consumers. Many participants (75%) reported visiting an Iowa winery following the workshop. The percentage of participants consuming Iowa wines increased by 20.6% (p

European and Canadian regulators enforce strict limits on the ethyl carbamate content of alcoholic beverages. North American distillers’ malt have high glycosidic nitrile levels which amplify the ethyl carbamate level of whiskey. Guidelines are required to produce low ethyl carbamate whiskey from North American distillers’ malts. This work challenges several strategies for reducing ethyl carbamate levels in bourbon and American whiskey products. New make spirit was produced using a bourbon mash bill on a continuous beer still with doubler. The low wines alcohol content and beer feed tray were systematically varied while the caustic cleaning schedules were monitored to generate …
A Mystery Of Microecology: Revealing The Ecological Relationship Between Allorhizobium Vitis And Missouri Native Grape Species, Hunter White
A Mystery Of Microecology: Revealing The Ecological Relationship Between Allorhizobium Vitis And Missouri Native Grape Species, Hunter White
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Crown gall disease can be very detrimental to grape and wine producers around the world by reducing vine vigor and yield. It is caused by the bacteria Allorhizobium vitis (A. Vitis) carrying a tumor inducing (Ti) plasmid. The A. vitis bacteria have been found in soil and cane tissues in vineyards around the world, and infect all cultivated grapes. However, there have been no reports of crown gall on native wild grapevines, and very little is known about the ecology of A. vitis in native ecosystems. I have sampled cambium tissues from three native wild grape species of …
Identification Of A Stable Qtl For Juice Color In A Vitis Interspecific Hybrid ‘Chambourcin’- Based Population, Qiuni Yang
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Berry juice color is one of the key factors influencing grape and wine quality, consumer preference, and marketability. While most previous studies on berry color have focused on the skin, research on juice color remains limited. This study investigated the genetic basis of berry juice color in a hybrid population derived from the Vitis interspecific hybrid ‘Chambourcin’ and V. vinifera ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’. A new nine-category visual scoring system was developed to assess juice color based on OIV 225. To achieve comprehensive precision and quantitative analysis, CIELAB parameters (L*, a*, b*), Hue, and Chroma were extracted from image-based measurements. Using berries …
Revolutionizing Grapevine Breeding Programs: A Mobile Genome Editing System For Perennial Crops, Bridget Bolt
Revolutionizing Grapevine Breeding Programs: A Mobile Genome Editing System For Perennial Crops, Bridget Bolt
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) faces unprecedented challenges from climate change, with up to 90% of current growing regions potentially becoming unsuitable for production within decades. Traditional breeding approaches require 25-30 years for variety development, creating a time constraint incompatible with the pace of environmental change. This research establishes the approach for a novel mobile RNA-based gene editing platform that addresses longstanding bottlenecks in grapevine improvement while preserving cultivar identity and reducing breeding timelines.
This research developed a three-component system for transgene-free gene editing in grapevine. First, a mobile CRISPR/Cas9 system was established using Agrobacterium rhizogenes transformation and the cut-and-dip …
