Biosecurity Council Of Western Australia Annual Report 2016/2017, Biosecurity Council Of Western Australia
Biosecurity published reports
Developing constructive biosecurity advice to government requires a comprehensive understanding of the needs and challenges of industry, government and community. It also requires an understanding of the potential impacts of changes to the Western Australian biosecurity system on these groups as well as on the biosecurity of the State.
During 2016/17, the Council continued its commitment to engaging with key stakeholders. The strong consultative processes used by the Council enabled robust advice to be developed for government. The main area of focus during the year was government’s investment in Western Australia’s biosecurity. The key areas of advice that were progressed …

Biosecurity published reports
The twenty-seven species of opuntioid cacti that are recognised as Weeds of National Significance are some of Australia's worst weeds. They grow over a wide climatic range and have impacted on pastoral and agricultural use of large tracts of land; pose an environmental risk to wildlife; and reduce aesthetic and recreational use, with direct impact on human safety.
Weedy infestations occur in all states and territories. Some are extensive, covering hundreds of thousands of hectares with a significant potential for range expansion
Over time there has been a substantial effort by government, industry, landholders and community groups to manage opuntioid …

In late April 2017, the Minister for Agriculture and Food (the Minister) requested advice from the Biosecurity Council of Western Australia (the Council) on the capability and capacity of the Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia (DAFWA) for securing market access in a horticultural biosecurity incident. DAFWA’s response to the recent tomato-potato psyllid (TPP) incursion was to be the starting point for advising how agency capability can be improved for future biosecurity incidents.
An ‘Issues Statement’ was developed to provide a summary of the potential underpinning factors that may have contributed to the major loss of market access and …

Barrow Island, the second largest island in Western Australia, is a Class A Nature Reserve and home to a variety of rare and endangered fauna and flora, some of which occur nowhere else. To protect fauna and flora it is essential workers and visitors to the island are aware of the risks that a non-indigenous species (NIS) poses to the ecological balance of Barrow Island.
Workers and visitors to Barrow Island need to be aware and keep their eyes open for any unusual fauna and flora that might be in accommodation units, recreation areas or the work place. Reports from …
