Carbon contracts have gained attention as a way to incentivize carbon-emissions reduction for the agricultural sector, particularly among beef-cattle producers.

Our study utilized data from a survey of 222 beef cattle producers in the southeastern United States to examine their knowledge, perceptions, and preferences regarding carbon contracts.

Survey respondents demonstrated a lack of accurate knowledge about carbon markets and contract specifications, with many overestimating the price of carbon.

Among the most common barriers to signing contracts were the cost of altering practices, the duration, and insufficient payments.

Further, our results indicated that producers require an additional $103.74/hectare ($42/acre) to accept …

The study uses six rounds of Index-Based Livestock Insurance (IBLI) panel surveys (2009 – 2015) for Northern Kenya’s Marsabit county to investigate the impact of IBLI on child nutrition and household food security. We employ Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Instrumental Variable (IV) regressions to account for potential endogeneity in IBLI uptake. The results indicate that while IBLI uptake significantly improves the intake of key nutrients such as Vitamin A, protein, iron, and fruits and vegetables, it does not translate into significant improvements in child nutrition status, as measured by Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) z-scores. Monoculture and simplified two-crop rotation systems compromise the ecosystem services essential to crop production, diminish agricultural productivity, and cause detrimental effects on the environment. In contrast to the simplified two-crop rotation, diversified crop rotation (DCR) refers to rotation systems that contain three or more crops. Despite multiple benefits generated by DCR, its usage has dwindled over the past several decades. Livestock is one of the most important agricultural sectors in Uzbekistan and it is based on family livestock farms. On family farms, livestock animals are fed with pressed roughage, including corn stalks, alfalfa hay, barbed straw and wheat straw, mixed with concentrated feed. The WA flock is at a historically low level, however, sheep profitability is at record highs so rebuilding the state flock is an industry priority. Minimising ewe losses is a necessary component of the flock rebuilding. As a result of the feed shortage and possible grain shortage with high prices likely due to demand for grain from the east coast, local farmers may be tempted to underfeed their ewes during the summer/autumn period. Awareness and good information regarding the cost of mis-managing ewe nutrition will help minimize this temptation.

The DAFWA-NBF project is committed to identifying growth and value creation opportunities for the WA Beef industry and have engaged PwC to estimate the value of increased security of supply.

A joint PwC/NBF team have developed a WA beef value chain model to better understand the industry’s potential and establish the potential value associated with changes in the security of supply.

Recent incidences of mass livestock mortality, known as dzud, have called into question the sustainability of pastoral nomadic herding, the cornerstone of Mongolian culture. A total of 20 million head of livestock perished in the mortality events of 2000–2002, and 2009–2010. To mitigate the effects of such events on the lives of herders, international agencies such as the World Bank are taking increasing interest in developing tailored market-based solutions like index-insurance. Their ultimate success depends on understanding the historical context and underlying causes of mortality. In this report, livestock budgets for nine sustainable farmers in South Dakota who raise beef cattle and two of the same farmers who raise hogs are presented. Results of whole-farm economic analysis--in which the livestock, sustainable crop rotation, and non-sustainable rotation crop enterprise budgets on the respective farms are integrated with each other--are also presented. The final sections of the report cover results of analyses of (1) livestock price sensitivity and (2) on-farm manure production and disposition.

This report presents findings from personal interviews undertaken in January-March 1989 with 22 of the 32 sustainable/regenerative farmers in South Dakota who responded to a Summer 1988 mail survey concerning their sustainable farming practices. [For the mail survey results, see Taylor, Dobbs, and Smolik, 1989.] The major purpose of the personal interview part of the study reported herein was to gain greater insight into (1) the sustainable crop rotations and livestock enterprises on these farmers' farms and (2) the judgments of these farmers about the riskiness and managerial strategies for meeting selected challenges of sustainable agriculture.

Livestock prices are established through various market channels, such as terminal markets and auction markets. Auction sales account for 74% of all cattle purchases and 64% of all cattle sales by South Dakota producers (Clauson, 1983). Livestock auctions are also an important market channel for feeder pigs, slaughter hogs and slaughter lambs. The major purpose of this research was to determine which factors, controllable or noncontrollable, have a significant impact on livestock prices established at auction market outlets in South Dakota. The major purpose of this study was to determine the least-cost method of producing red meat in Kenya. Linear programming was used in the study. A simulated reduction of grazing land available in one of the settlement areas was carried out to indicate what effect this had on the overall regional production pattern of meat in the country.

This study was designed to measure costs of long-distance shipment of meat by motor carrier. Costs were compared with published rates for meat shipments by truck, rail and trailer-on-flatcar (TOFC). Finally, meat trucking costs were compared with costs of trucking meat-equivalent amounts of livestock. The problem of defining market areas is basically a problem of grouping differentials between rancher costs of grazing on private leased range and National Forests that are reasonably homogeneous and statistically testing differences among means of the different groups.
