Modern genetics have improved maize hybrids to better tolerate stress, use nutrients more efficiently and potentially yield higher. Management practices, such as narrow row technology and high plant population density (PPD) may further improve yields in modern maize under irrigated, non-limiting conditions. High PPD (74, 99, 124, 148 K seeds ha-1) were tested in narrow rows with up to four nitrogen (N) rates in three locations over two years in Kentucky with a modern maize hybrid in irrigated, non-limiting conditions. Results indicate that optimal seeding rates were 99,000 to 124,000 seeds ha-1, providing maximum yield and …

Food waste at retail represents forgone sales and embodies store management and disposal costs. Fresh produce is the largest contributing sector to food waste at retail and bulky, seasonal products are an added challenge when stores experience a high waste event. In order to improve, retailers need to better understand the costs of food waste, as well as how management strategies can impact these costs.

Agribusinesses rely on producers choosing their products and services for the success of their business. Agribusinesses can use information regarding how producers rate the importance of certain areas of risk and what takes most of the producers' time to offer specific services to different segments of producers to better meet their needs. An ordered logit model and a multinomial logit model are used to determine factors significant to producers' use of time and importance of various areas of risk. Soilless media, sometimes called growth media or substrates, are one of the most important components of crop production in containers or raised beds with restricted volume. The word media is the plural of medium. The physical and chemical properties of media greatly influence optimal management protocols. Primary components of these media may be peat, pine bark, perlite, vermiculite, compost and/or perhaps coarse sand. Producing high-quality milk is a primary concern of dairy farmers, which is why the production herd often receives more attention than the dry cows and bred heifers. However, it is important that dairy producers not lose sight of the great value that their dry cows and bred heifers hold: the future of the milking herd. Environmental management practices such as rotational grazing, heavy-use area pads for feeding and watering, and shelter can be used to increase close-up cows’ future performance by preventing mastitis and other health disorders such as lameness.

Soybean grows best on fertile soils. For decades, the University of Kentucky has conducted field studies to establish the relationship between soil nutrient supplies and soybean yield. Adequate soil fertility must be present so that yields are not limited. Soybean removes a large amount of nutrients in the seed relative to other annual crops. For each bushel of soybean produced, 3 lb N, 0.7 lb P2O5, and 1.1 lb K2O will be removed in the seed, but considerably more is required to supply the leaves, stems and pods that are not removed during harvest …

Water quality can have a huge impact on plant growth, especially in soilless plant production systems. Water is certainly one of the most critical inputs in nursery and greenhouse crop production. Such production systems are extremely diverse but are most commonly characterized as container production, raised-bed production or hydroponics. Soilless systems require intensive management of water and nutrients for optimal plant growth and production. Nutrients are constantly cycling through farms. Nutrients come onto a farm in the form of feed, commercial fertilizers, manure, or compost, and they leave the farm with harvested crops, sold livestock, and off-site disposal of manure and other waste. Sometimes nutrients are even lost to the air, soil, or water. Nutrient management allows farmers to use nutrients (specifically nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) wisely for optimal economic benefit with minimal impact on the environment.

Lameness and mastitis are the two most costly diseases in the dairy industry. Reduction of these diseases through housing and management is beneficial. Compost bedded pack (CBP) and sand freestall barns were compared in a long-term, on-farm study to assess the effect of housing on each disease. Another research objective was to evaluate the effects of ambient weather conditions on moisture and 20 cm internal temperature of CBP. Compost bedded pack moisture, C:N ratio, and internal temperature effects on cleanliness, mastitis, and bedding bacterial counts were also considered.
