Effect Of Upper Plant Parts On Yield And Quality In Turkish Durum Wheat Landraces From Different Regions, Altitudes, And Provinces, Nusret Zenci̇rci̇

The aim was to explore 117 durum wheat (T. turgidum L. conv. durum (Desf.) MacKey) landraces from 2 regions, 5 altitude intervals, and 12 provinces for flag leaf length, width, angle, sheath length, fertile spikes, spike length and width, plant yield, percent vitreous kernel, pearling index, percent grain protein, and 1000 kernel weight. The field experiment consisted of 566 single plant selections from 117 populations with Kunduru 1149 and Kızıltan 91 controls, analyzed via descriptive and multivariate statistical methods. Plant yield with the highest variation was positively correlated with flag leaf length, flag leaf sheath length, and spike width. While …

Micronutrient deficiency is widespread in many Asian countries due to the calcareous nature of soils, high pH, low organic matter, salt stress, continuous drought, high bicarbonate content in irrigation water, and imbalanced application of fertilizers. Some of the adverse effects of micronutrient deficiency-induced stress in plants include low crop yield and quality, imperfect plant morphological structure (such as fewer xylem vessels of small size), widespread infestation of various diseases and pests, low activation of phytosiderophores, and lower fertilizer use efficiency. The absence of micronutrient fertilizers results in inadequate absorption of trace elements by plants, which causes substantial yield losses in …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Bursaphelenchus vallesianus isolated from a dead Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris, in the village of Bahçecik northeastern Turkey in an area managed by the Trabzon Regional Forestry Directorate is described and illustrated. The morphological characters match the original description. This is the first report of the species on pine wood in Turkey.

Soil organic matter (SOM) is essential to all soil processes that have an impact on crop production and the environment. Soils of the semi-arid Mediterranean region are low in SOM due to environmental conditions (temperature, moisture) and centuries of cultivation. Hence, as SOM has a major influence on soil aggregation, nutrient supply, and soil moisture, as well as the relationships between them, there is a need to assess the impact of cropping systems on this critical soil parameter. Three white-rot fungi (Ceriporiopsis subvermispora (Pilát) Gilb. & Ryvarden, Phanerochate chrysosporium Burds, and Trametes (Coriolus) versicolor (L.) Lloyd) were tested for their ability to modify/degrade lignin in cooking and bleaching. Both chips and pulps of Acacia mangium Willd. and Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn. were pretreated with these white-rot fungi for different time periods (8, 12, and 16 days for chips; and 4, 8, and 12 days for pulps). For chip pretreatment, Kappa number decreased with the increase of fungal treatment time, and the maximum reduction in Kappa number was 28% and 25% for acacia and eucalyptus, respectively, after 16 days of …

Maintenance of redundant garlic (Allium sativum L.) accessions is expensive due to the necessity of yearly regenerating garlic accessions in germplasm centers. Therefore, rapid characterization of garlic accessions is important for avoiding duplicated genotypes. For this purpose we developed several locus-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based DNA markers, and tested them for the characterization of garlic clones that were previously analyzed using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Among 25 garlic clones, 4 locus-specific markers generated 24 polymorphic alleles. Garlic accessions within a group determined by AFLP and RAPD analyses generally had the same alleles …

FAME and RAPD profiles were used to examine biochemical and genetic relationships between 10 selected sea buckthorn genotypes found in the same area of Eastern Anatolia. Fatty acid composition of sea buckthorn berries was determined using gas chromatography. Fatty acid results showed that there were differences between genotypes in both the percent and presence of fatty acids in the berries. Myristic acid was detected only in berries of the ESB8 and ESB9 genotypes. Nervonic acid was detected only in the ESB5 genotype and linoleic acid was detected only in the ESB4 genotype. This study was conducted to evaluate reproductive growth, oil and protein accumulation in seeds, and some yield components of 8 groundnut genotypes in 2001 and 2002. The number of flowers, pegs, and pods per plant during the reproductive period were determined with periodic counts starting from flowering. The percentage of flowers turned to pegs and pods, and the percentage of pegs turned to pods were calculated at the end of the growing period. The objective of this study was to estimate main genetic effects including digenic non-allelic epistasis for yield and starch content in grain by generation mean analysis performed in 9 maize populations (biparental crosses) and their subsequent 6 generations (2 parental, F1 and F2, and 2 backcrosses). The estimated additive-dominance model of inheritance was, due to epistasis, only partially successful in explaining inheritance model for investigated traits and crosses. The additive-dominance model was adequate at 6 crosses for grain yield and 3 crosses for starch content. A digenic epistatic model was sufficient to explain the inheritance model at 6 crosses for …

This study was carried out in order to determine the effects of drying temperature (25, 35, and 45 °C) and the developmental stage (55, 65, 75, and 85 days after anthesis (DAA)) on germination, vigor, and the sugar (sucrose, glucose, fructose) and fatty acid contents of pepper seeds (Capsicum annuum L.) over 2 consecutive years. In seeds harvested at 75 DAA and after, seed viability and vigor were not influenced by drying at temperatures up to 45 °C. Comparison Of Different Chemical Pulps From Wheat Straw And Bleaching With Xylanase Pre-Treated Ecf Method, Sai̇m Ateş, Celi̇l Atik, Yonghao Ni, Esat Gümüşkaya

Different pulping processes, kraft-anthraquinone (AQ), bio-kraft, soda-AQ, ALCELL, and FORMACELL were studied for wheat straw. Fungal pre-treatment with Ceriporiopsis subvermispora, white rot fungi, was applied to wheat straw before kraft-AQ pulping, the so-called bio-kraft process. Fiber properties, carbohydrate contents, FT-IR analyses, strength properties of resultant paper, and bleachability characteristics were included to determine the properties of these pulp samples. In addition, the effects of the xylanase pre-treatment on the subsequent Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) bleaching process were investigated. Leguminous cover crops have the potential to combat the rising input cost of commercial nitrogen (N) fertilizers. This experiment examines benefits of implementing a leguminous cover and/or companion crop into a corn production system. Legumes biologically fix nitrogen from the atmosphere, adding to the nitrogen content of the soil. In this experiment Austrian winter peas (Pisum arvense) (AWP) were used as the leguminous cover crop and cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata) were used as the companion crop. At one time or another, sugar cane was grown commercially in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. This thesis examines the use of two specific types of precision agriculture technologies: cost maps and lightbar. Cost maps visually depict spatial differences in production costs. The visual depictions of these costs are represented using ArcGIS in an attempt to aide farmers in further decision making. Results will show that cost maps have great possibilities in their addition to the set of tools that farmers use in decision making. This thesis will expand the understanding of lightbar from a partial budget study to a whole farm model incorporating competition across different enterprises for labor and capital. Triticale (×Triticosecale Wittmack) has potential as a feed crop in the north central United States and could also function as a companion crop for alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) establishment. The objectives of this research were to assess the suitability of a short-statured spring triticale as a companion crop and determine optimum triticale seeding rates for grain yield and alfalfa establishment. Spring triticale ‘Trimark 37812’ and alfalfa were grown in companion at Ames and Sioux Center, IA during 2004 and 2005. Population Parameters Of Tetranychus Cinnabarinus Boisduval (Prostigmata: Tetranychidae) On Eight Strawberry Cultivars, Cengi̇z Kazak, Cemal Ki̇bri̇tçi̇

Development times, reproductive rates, and population growth parameters of Tetranychus cinnabarinus Boisd. on 8 strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne) varieties were evaluated under laboratory conditions. Total development times of immature males and females were not significantly influenced by the strawberry varieties. T. cinnabarinus laid significantly more eggs per day on cultivar Muir (8.46) than on the other cultivars. Similarly, T. cinnabarinus on Muir had the highest net reproductive rate (R_o) (120.19 F/F), while R_o was the lowest on cultivar Sweet Charlie (39.51 F/F). The generation time ranged from 18.96 to 22.32 days, but no significant varietal effect was seen. The …

Agro-industrial waste presents an alternative to inorganic fertilizer. It is possible to use tobacco waste as a soil amendment due to its high organic matter and low toxic element content. Tobacco waste compost (TWC) and farmyard manure (FYM) were applied to Typic Xerofluvent soil at various ratios, and butter-head lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. Capitata L.) was grown. The effects on soil organic C and total N content, soil microbial biomass, soil respiration, activity of 4 enzymes (dehydrogenase, urease, alkaline phosphatase, and \beta-glucosidase), and lettuce yield were determined. Isozymes from 12 enzyme systems extracted from haploid female gametophytes of the seeds were separated by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. In the 12 enzyme systems, 16 loci and 37 alleles were observed. Average proportion of polymorphic loci for the populations ranged from 43.8% to 62.5%. Predatory behaviour, prey consumption, and foraging cycle of adults and larvae of Scymnus levaillanti Muls. and Cycloneda sanguinea L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were investigated using a video/computer recording and measurement system. Larvae of S. levaillanti spent more time in feeding activities compared to C. sanguinea. Adults of both S. levaillanti and C. sanguinea spent more time in non-feeding activities (digestion and cleaning) compared to their larvae whilst adults of S. levaillanti spent less time in non-feeding activities than those of C. sanguinea. Some Properties Of Eucalyptus Wood Flour Filled Recycled High Density Polyethylene Polymer-Composites, Fati̇h Mengeloğlu, Kadi̇r Karakuş

The mechanical properties of eucalyptus wood flours (EWF) filled recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE) composites were investigated. First thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis were conducted for recycled HDPE and EWF. Later the effects of EWF and maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (MAPE) concentrations were studied. TGA analysis revealed that EWF and recycled HDPE started degrading around 230 °C and 280 °C, respectively. Melting temperature of the recycled HDPE was around 129 °C. This paper provides an overview of selected trends and conditions of ecosystem services, in particular, food production and impacts on the environment based on the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. It then describes outcomes for future ecosystem services under alternative development pathways, with a focus on tradeoffs between food security and the environment, such as implications for fertilizer use, and the role of biofuels. As tradeoffs among various ecosystem services are expected to increase into the future, research will need to focus increasingly on ways to achieve a balance between food security and improving non-food ecosystem services. Land cover changes influence the biogeochemistry, hydrology, and climate of the earth. Studies that assessed land cover changes at the global scale mostly focused on: deforestation, cropland expansion, dry land degradation, urbanisation, pasture expansion, and agricultural intensification. For the assessment, remotely sensed land-cover data, census data, and expert knowledge were used. In tropical regions, forest is cleared for the expansion of cropland, wood extraction, or infrastructure expansion. This widely occurs in the Amazon region and in Asia. In many temperate regions, the area under forest is increasing although forest plantations are also on the increase in the tropics. Croplands expanded …
