The effects of inoculation with Rhizobium on forage yield and yield components of common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) were evaluated under rainy conditions in Samsun, Turkey, in the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 growing seasons. Common vetch cultivars Kubilay, Ürem, Kara elçi, Uludağ, Emir, Çubuk, Nilüfer and Rhizobium leguminosarum were used as materials. The experiment was established as a split block design with 3 replicates as averages of 2 years. While the highest forage and dry matter yields were determined in the inoculated cultivar Kara elçi, the highest crude protein content and crude protein yield were obtained from the inoculated cultivars Kubilay …

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of foliar Fe applications on leaf Fe and some nutrient (P, Ca, Mg, K, Mn and Zn) concentrations in strawberry (Fragaria vesca L.) cultivars. For this purpose, 2 forms of Fe solutions (FeSO_4. 7 H_2O and Fe-EDTA) containing 0.28% Fe were sprayed onto the strawberry leaves at 3 growth stages (before blooming, first blooming, full blooming). Depending on the Fe sources, Fe concentration increased after each application. Before blooming, leaf Fe concentration increased from 60 mg kg^{-1} (control) to 127 and 105 mg kg^{-1} with Fe-EDTA and FeSO_4. 7 H_2O, respectively. During …

This research was performed to determine the effect of different operating parameters on seed holding in a single seed metering unit. The metering unit was a vertical seed plate with a vacuum, used in seeding maize (Zea mays L.). An electronic counter in the metering unit was used to determine the holes without seed on the plate holes. The shapes of the holes, peripheral velocities, vacuum pressure, hole area on the seed plate and thousand grain weight of seed (TGW) were chosen as the operating parameters. This report identifies, describes and locates nine sub-regions within the land cleared for agricultural uses in the Avon River Basin in Western Australia. The sub-regions are: Darling Range; Dale/Upper Avon; Avon Valley; Yealering Lakes; Mortlock; Northern Sandplain; south-east Lakes; Carrabin; Southern Cross. The sub-regions are described in terms of their distinguishing biophysical characteristics of: soils and related original vegetative cover; general topography; surface and sub-surface hyrdological stus; underlying geology; and rainfall and evapotranspiration range. Current dominant land use, economic drivers and land use pressures are identified for each sub-region.

A case study framework was used to study the competitiveness of Honduran coffee with major importing partners, along with an import demand analysis. Several important points summarize the findings. First, trends in green coffee supply and consumption continue to depress world coffee prices, making the production of coffee less attractive. Since small coffee producing countries, like Honduras, cannot affect the international price, they must improve efficiency, productivity, employ cost reduction techniques, and rely on the promotion of specific product attributes to remain competitive. Hedonic models estimate the marginal effect of land characteristics and factors that contribute to a purchase decision on rural land values in submarkets of north Louisiana. While size of tract and mix of land use have expected impacts on rural land values, forces that motivate the buyer also affect price. The natural resource endowment of each of the three submarkets in this study differs significantly from one another. Topography has clearly identifiable impacts on crop selection and income in each submarket. The North American Pawpaw [Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal] shows great potential as a new fruit crop. Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Ky. is the site for the USDA National Clonal Germplasm Repository (NCGR) for Asimina species. Both the fruit and the trees themselves are of high value to growers and nursery producers. Pawpaw cultivars are currently propagated by grafting or budding onto seedling rootstock; no method currently exists to clonally propagate pawpaw on its own roots. This thesis examines the use of Precision Agriculture technologies to define Management Zones within a multicrop production system. It further evaluates the economic feasibility of implementing spatially variable insecticide applications against conventional blanket treatments with respect to insect pest management in cotton production.
