As part of our ongoing monitoring and analysis of Nebraska抯 agricultural land market, we have tracked for several years the patterns and trends of actual real estate transactions. Each year, our reporters from around the state provide us with detailed information on about 500 transactions which have occurred during the previous 12 months. They report on sales which they deem as armslength and typical for their locality. Soybean producers who decide to use the futures markets to price their crop face a number of important decisions. Among the choices they face are whether to use futures or options on futures, when should positions be established and liquidated, which futures months are most appropriate and what particular marketing strategies or combinations of strategies to employ. Ongoing research in Nebraska on soybean marketing strategies from the early 80's through the present has revealed evidence that relatively simple marketing strategies employing futures markets can be profitable for producers, and that the most profitable strategies have been relatively consistent over time. …

With the passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the pace of regulatory change increased exponentially. The impact on rural areas is significant; the issues specific to Southern states and communities unique. This report provides a brief history of telecommunications regulation and an overview of the key elements of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Innovations in state telecommunications regulations, as well as a summary of actions taken by Southern states since the 1996 Act was adopted, are discussed. Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

Nebraska's agricultural real estate market conditions have been monitored and analyzed annually since 1978 by the Department of Agricultural Economics-UNL. In the most recent survey for 2000, the markets for agricultural land were found to have remained relatively unchanged over the past year, despite generally poor farm commodity prices. As of February 1st, 2000, the UNL survey showed the state all-land average value to be $698 per acre, a 1.1 percent increase from 12 months earlier. While the values for particular classes of land across the sub-state areas moved in both directions, the percentage changes from year-earlier levels were generally …

Many farmers in Arkansas and other parts of the United States are experiencing financial stress. The purpose of this report is to highlight the situation of Arkansas farmers and to offer an outlook for 2000. The report emphasizes the production, price, income, financial, farmland value, and interest rate outlook for Arkansas farmers and considers the impact of the macroeconomy on agriculture. The contribution of poultry production to the Arkansas agricultural economy is also presented and analyzed.

The study assesses the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreements. It explains the conflict between the two agreements over IPR and attempts to answer how their differences may be best addressed.The study uses text interpretation, mainly hermeneutics which was originally used for theological studies but which is now an accepted method that emphasizes detailed examination of texts and meanings.The study finds three major areas where CBD and WTO IPR Agreements are not consistent with each other. Parts of Nebraska are extremely dry. Even timely rains are not likely to result in normal crop and grass production on non-irrigated ground. Livestock operations dependent on grass from April through the remainder of the year are greatly susceptible to problems. Below normal grass production will mean lower carrying capacities. Rainfall shortage may also impact livestock drinking water in areas with shallow wells and areas that depend on small earthen dams. Early planning usually offers more options since the options are often time dependent. But late planning is better than no planning.

On July 1, 1997, the states of Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming, and the U.S. Department of the Interior signed the "Cooperative Agreement for Platte River Research and Other Efforts Relating to Endangered Species Habitat Along the Central Platte River, Nebraska," more commonly known as the Platte River Cooperative Agreement (PRCA). The PRCA is a proposed framework for cooperatively addressing Platte River endangered species issues. In order to implement the PRCA, the endangered species recovery program that the PRCA proposes must be reviewed and federally approved under the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the federal National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). …

Efficacy, Phytotoxicity, And Cover Crop Response Of Herbicide Combinations In Dark Fire Cured Tobacco, Tracy Kelley

Field studies were established during the summer of 1999 at the Agricultural Research and Education Complex of Western Kentucky University to evaluate efficacy, phytotoxicity, and cover crop response of herbicide combinations in dark fire cured tobacco. A randomized complete block design was used with nine treatments replicated three times. Hydroponic tobacco transplants (c.v. 'TND950') were established on May 20,1999 in a conventionally tilled system on a Pembroke silt loam (Mollic Palleudalf) with a pH of 5.8 and an organic matter content of 1.2%. The transplants were established at a population of approximately 10,278 plants/ha. Herbicide treatments were applied on May …

Carpenter ants are members of the insect order Hymenoptera, which includes bees, wasps, sawflies, and other ants. Carpenter ants can be occasional pests in the home and are noted particularly for the damage they can cause when nesting in wood. In Utah they are more of a nuisance rather than a major structural pest.

Simulated Performance Of Conventional High-Temperature Drying, Dryeration, And Combination Drying Of Shelled Corn With Automatic Conditioning, Michael D. Montross, Dirk E. Maier

Combination drying, based on computer simulation, was evaluated as an alternative drying technique to traditional high-temperature drying and dryeration. Simulation models of high-temperature crossflow drying and in-bin drying and conditioning were used to evaluate the performance of conventional crossflow drying and full-heat crossflow drying followed by dryeration or natural-air drying for Indianapolis, Indiana, and Des Moines, Iowa. Energy costs from propane, electricity, moisture shrink below the market moisture content, and dry matter loss were estimated to find the total average drying cost over 29 years. Dryeration and combination drying reduced the total drying cost by approximately 10% compared to conventional …

The report also contains some comparisons of data for 1998 and 1999. According to this report, Oregon saw the second-largest harvest in terms of tonnage of crushed grapes; additionally, cooperage capacity continued to grow.

New Generation Cooperatives (NGCs) are farmerowned cooperative organizations generally characterized by an involvement in value-added processing activities and a linkage of producer capital contributions to product delivery rights. Although the earliest NGCs were established in the North Central United States, particularly in North Dakota and Minnesota, interest in this organizational form has spread to other regions of the country because of the perceived success of many of these cooperatives.
