Garden Insects And Their Control, John A. Lofgren Jun 1952

Garden Insects And Their Control, John A. Lofgren

SDSU Extension Circulars

Every garden is open to attack by insect pests at some time during the growing season. These attacks may cause severe damage if they go unnoticed and unchecked. It is important to learn to recognize these insects so that the proper control measures may be applied at the right time. Adequate fertility, clean culture, weed control, daily watchfulness and prompt treatment for insects and plant diseases, will do much to increase garden production.

Our job is to accept the adolescent as he is, with all his weaknesses, his carelessness, his uncertainties, his differences and his problems, and help him see the good qualities which he possesses.

Inflation And Deflation, Lyle M. Bender May 1952

Inflation And Deflation, Lyle M. Bender

SDSU Extension Circulars

Inflation and deflation are words of many different meanings. They refer to the changes in general price levels. Inflation refers generally to a situation where most prices are rising. On the other hand, deflation refers to a situation in which most prices are falling. In between these two extremes is an "ideal" situation called "stability." In our form of economy fluctuations in general price levels are normal. Inflation may be more carefully defined as a situation where the number of dollars spent increases faster than the goods and services produced. In this case, prices will rise. The opposite situation, deflation, …

Parents : What Are Their Responsibilities, Bertha E. Weller, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College

SDSU Extension Circulars

"A good parent prepares his child to walk alone." One can think a lot about that reply. It's really not too much different from saying, "We would never need to learn to walk if we were always carried, as infants are." It is a wise parent who teaches his child how to make decisions for himself. It gives him the true form of self-confidence since he is able to find his way through difficulties. Children, just like adults, grow in admiration for people who help them to discover what they can do.

Agricultural Productive Capacity Of South Dakota, Lyle M. Bender

SDSU Extension Circulars

The importance of proper land use and agriculture's capacity to produce is very real today. A continuous, adequate supply of food is essential to peace-time prosperity and is highly important in our present defense plans. Since South Dakota is a food producing state, it's citizens have a responsibility to the nation, as well as to their children and grandchildren, to use our land resources wisely. If such are our responsibilities does it not require farmers and others to look to the adequacy of our food production? What is good land use and how does it affect agriculture's capacity to produce: …

It is recognized that there are two important and profitable markets for grain in the state, namely, (1) market through livestock feeding and (2) industrial uses. Therefore, it will be of great advantage to the producer if he will carefully choose superior varieties that fit his area and his market.

There are only 24 hours a day. No matter how hard we try we cannot make more. Time cannot be found, spent or saved it can only be used. Time may be used wisely to gain many desired satisfactions, or it may be used unwisely with few pleasant results. If we want to use time wisely and save effort, we must be willing to admit there is room for improvement. We must also be willing to change from the old "in the rut" way to a new way of doing our job. Can you improve the way of doing your …

Gifts For Family And Friends, Anna D. Walker Sep 1951

Gifts For Family And Friends, Anna D. Walker

SDSU Extension Circulars

Part of the joy in giving gifts comes from the making of something special for a friend or family member. The giving of gifts to mark such events as anniversaries, Christmas and Easter is a long established custom. Looking back into history, we read that tribute was given to show homage to royalty and other people of importance. It was thought that the rarer and richer the gift, the greater was the love and respect shown. Rare spices, perfumes, gold and jewels obtained by the giver at great expense and often much hardship were considered suitable gifts for royalty. People …

There is no better way of cutting food costs than to raise food in your own garden. It can't be denied that vegetables are fresh when they are picked right from the garden. Quality and food value of purchased vegetables are lost by delay in getting them to the consumer. Gardening is fun. It provides a useful form of recreation for the entire family.

Weed Control In Lawns And Gardens, Leonard L. Schrader, Soloman Cook Mar 1951

Weed Control In Lawns And Gardens, Leonard L. Schrader, Soloman Cook

SDSU Extension Circulars

Weeds. are a problem in the city, small town and around the farm home, just as they are a problem in pastures, hay lands and tilled fields. Wherever weeds grow, they are an unsightly and expensive nuisance. In the vacant or untended lots m town, weeds become the source of seed that will spread to surrounding gardens, lawns and farm fields. Hampered vision at intersections, caused by rank-growing weeds, has contributed to many traffic accidents. In addition, they sap the soil's fertility, which probably is sent up in smoke when the weeds are burned in the fall. In gardens, they …

With a wave of the magic legendary wand, the good fairy transformed the unattractive into the desirable, the ugly into the beautiful and the rundown into the useful. Today a woman is her own fairy. The magic wand that makes the old as good as new is imagination, ingenuity and know-how. Like the two chairs on the cover that Mrs. Homemaker proudly shows her family, the unattractive chair has completely changed …

Farm Building Plans, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College

SDSU Extension Circulars

Buildings are a necessary part of each farm unit. They are used to provide shelter and facilities for farm family living, to house livestock, for storage and processing of food and feed, and for utility storage or service. Most farm buildings are designed to be used for many years. A carefully planned, well-located building carefully adapted to the use for which it is intended, is a profitable investment and a source of satisfaction. On the other hand, a poorly planned and improperly built structure may prove both costly and unsatisfactory. Every building on the farm represents a longtime investment and …

Choosing a Breed: The question "Which breed shall I raise" confronts every purebred hog producer. He may have a personal preference which will assist him in choosing a breed. If he has no such preference, it would be well worth while to consider the most popular breed in the community. This procedure will help the breeder to gain popularity, in establishing a reputation, and in attracting more buyers into the community. Each breeder may believe he has the best breed because of size, feeding qualities, higher dressing percentage or some other factor; but there is more difference within breeds than …

Egg Coolers For Better Eggs, Boyd J. Bonzer, Louis Lubinus

SDSU Extension Circulars

A recent study by the Research and Marketing administration showed that. South Dakota farmers are marketing only about 40 percent top quality eggs at the produce stations or first buyers. South Dakota is an egg exporting state and has to depend on Eastern and West Coast markets to buy three of every four eggs it produces. The consumers on these export markets are demanding a high quality egg, which leads to a great deal of discrimination against the low quality Midwestern eggs. Nearly all eggs are of top quality when they are laid. A very high percentage of the eggs …
