2003 Ianr Team Award And Exemplary Service Award Presentations, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

What a treat it is to be here today to celebrate the outstanding work of members of our IANR community.

It seems so much of our administrative time these days is spent dealing with difficult and joyless issues surrounding slashed budgets, lost programs, and the very real pain those engender. Perhaps it is that pain that doubles our joy when we have opportunities such as today to celebrate excellence. This afternoon we celebrate accomplishment in two ways with the IANR Team Award, and with the Exemplary Service Award.

We'll begin today with the IANR Team Award, which recognizes the importance …

Nebraska Hall Of Agricultural Achievement Dinner, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

What a joy it is to be here tonight to celebrate the achievements of these wonderful new additions to the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement. It seems as if all of the speaking I’ve done lately has been on the very difficult subject of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources’ budget cuts, so troubling to all of us who care about Nebraska. So it’s a real treat to have this opportunity to instead focus on the highly pleasant business of recognizing people so deserving of this high honor. I can think of few experiences more gratifying than those in …

Neal Harlan Eulogy, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Several evenings this week I have watched the luminous glow of Nebraska sunsets just before the dark of night encompasses fields, farms, and Nebraska's communities, and I have thought of Neal Harlan. I have thought of just how deeply the roots of this Nebraska farm boy have stretched across the rich, fertile soil of our state, I have thought of how those roots helped grow the man whose life we honor and celebrate here today.

Nebraska Agri-Business Association, John C. Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

When I was with you back in August of 2001, I mentioned that in New Mexico I served on the board of the New Mexico Agricultural-Chemical and Plant Food Association, and have, I hope, some appreciation of the work you do. I also truly appreciate your interest in your support of the work conducted at the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Thank you for that! Your support, always critical, becomes even more so in such difficult, difficult economic times as our state finds itself in today. Nearly $4 million dollars was permanently slashed from …

Agriculture Builders Of Nebraska, Inc., John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

There’s a story that a construction foreman one day noticed one of his workers pushing his wheelbarrow upside down around the work site.
“Hey,” the foreman shouted, “turn that thing right side up!”
The man with the wheelbarrow looked at him in surprise. “Don’t be silly,” he said. “Every time I do that, they put bricks in it!”
I think of that story sometimes, in the midst of these difficult economic times, as our states, its people, and its university, in turn, wrestle with budge cuts. Wouldn’t it be great if we all could just turn our wheelbarrows over and …

Good morning! On behalf of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources representatives here this morning, I want to express our very real pleasure in being with you, and our very great appreciation of all that you do. We in the Institute value the Agriculture Builders of Nebraska highly. In fact, the thoughtful perspective and the confidential advice of the ABN Executive Committee in the …

Wagonhammer Education Center Groundbreaking, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Last year when I had the opportunity to speak at the 2002 Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory Open House I noted the tremendous gift Pete and Abbie Gudmundsen gave the university, the people who live throughout their beloved Sandhills, and, indeed, the entire state of Nebraska when they donated their almost 13,000 acre ranch, the Rafter C, to the University of Nebraska Foundation back in 1978.

Talking Points For "Wake Dance" Dedication, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

*When the Morrill Act was passed in 1862, creating the land-grant university system which includes our own University of Nebraska, part of the language of the bill read: " ... the leading object shall be, without excluding other scientific and classical studies, and including military tactics, to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts, in such manner as the legislatures of the States may respectively prescribe, in order to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the several pursuits and professions in life.

I think it comes as no surprise here when I say I am a very firm believer in the importance of engagement and outreach for Nebraska's land-grant university. We have a proud tradition of teaching, research, and engagement and outreach at the University of Nebraska. And each day we build on that tradition.

Apc Hearing, John Owens Oct 2002

Apc Hearing, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Members of the Academic Planning Committee, and others present, I appear before the committee this afternoon to speak about a vertical cut proposed for the West Central Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, a cut we in the Institute would not choose to make unless forced by circumstances to do so.

After three rounds of budget cutting there are no budget cuts we can make that will not adversely affect someone, somewhere. Whatever cuts we make, worthwhile programs are gone, our constituents are less well-served, someone affected will think we should have cut something else. We are recommending these cuts because, in our …

Apc Hearing, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Members of the Academic Planning Committee, and others here today, I will appear before this committee today and tomorrow during the APC hearing process to speak about proposed vertical cuts in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources budget. Each time we will discuss a cut we in the Institute do not like ... a cut we would not make unless forced, as we are now, to do so. This is true of today's proposal to close the South Central Research and Extension Center at Clay Center.

Nebraska Lead Xxii Dinner, John Owens Sep 2002

Nebraska Lead Xxii Dinner, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

I’d like to start tonight with the words of the late anthropologist Margaret Mead, who once said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
As the LEAD22 class I have no doubt that you are a group of thoughtful Nebraska citizens, and we look forward with enthusiastic anticipation to your important participation in various agricultural and other organizations when you complete this wonderful program. We in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources look forward to all you can and will do in …

The Nebraska State Grange, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Thank you so much for inviting my wife Virginia and me to be with you today. It delights me to talk about land-grant universities in general, and about the land-grant university mission we take so very seriously in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources in particular, because I am so proud of the way our faculty and staff continually strive to contribute to and improve the economic and societal well-being of rural Nebraska, as well as all of Nebraska.

What a tremendous gift “Pete” and Abbie Gudmundsen gave to the University, to the people who live throughout their beloved Sandhills, and to the entire State of Nebraska when they donated their 12,817 acre ranch, the Rafter C, to the University of Nebraska Foundation in 1978. And what tremendous work our faculty and staff have accomplished here over the past 20 years. UNL faculty and staff research and educational efforts have truly made this ranch the “Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory.”

Dr. Edward (Ted) Elliot Eulogy, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Kathy and Susie, members of the faculty, and staff of the School of Natural Resource Sciences, ladies and gentlemen.
There are some things in this world that, try as we may, just cannot be adequately accomplished. One of those things, for me at least, is to express adequately what I feel about the passing of Dr. Edward (Ted) Elliot.
Ted came to this University of Nebraska a few months before I arrived, and it was my distinct honor to count him among my friends at this great University. Ted was a man of exceptional scientific standing and wisdom, and his …

Apc Hearings, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Members of the Academic Planning Committee, and others here today, it is my responsibility to speak with you about the budget cuts we are recommending in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. This is a difficult task, because I must speak for cuts that I would prefer not to make, cuts I know are opposed by constituents and colleagues whom I hold in high regard, cuts imposed upon us because of the current status of the Nebraska economy.

Tenure, John Owens May 2002

Tenure, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

Tenure is not easy to get. It is not, as one journalist puts it, a smooth rail for the gravy train. It is a long and challenging road ... Evaluation of the candidate for tenure is serious and thorough. Hours and days are spent reading and reviewing research contributions. Teaching is reviewed extensively ... The basic reason tenure is bestowed is to preserve freedom for highly trained and capable people to do their best work, to protect them from inappropriate political pressures ... Evaluation does not cease with tenure. Tenured faculty are reviewed at mandated intervals and also annually to …
