Urban Agriculture In Asia To Meet The Food Production Challenges Of Urbanization: A Review, Onyekachukwu Akaeze, Dilip Nandwani
Urban Agriculture In Asia To Meet The Food Production Challenges Of Urbanization: A Review, Onyekachukwu Akaeze, Dilip Nandwani
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Urban expansion in Asia is concentrated in metropolitan areas. This has adversely affected in-city food production by decreasing farmlands in and around urban centers. Asian countries have experienced fast disappearance of urban-fringe farmland which at some point provided 70% of the vegetables consumed by the city's population. Uneven distribution of incomes, along with an increase in urban poverty, has further exacerbated the already critical problems of low quantity and quality and high prices of wholesome food. In India, it is estimated that five out of every six urban families typically spend 70% of their income on food. The United Nations …

Substrate Properties And Fertilizer Rates On Yield Responses Of Lettuce In A Vertical Growth System, Zadarreyal Wiggins, Onyekachukwu Akaeze, Dilip Nandwani, Anthony Witcher

The increased demand for food and the challenge for space for agriculture production in urban centers have made the vertical growth system an interesting trend. Agriculture is no longer only the horizontal, traditional, and soil grown method. Urban agriculture has created ways for inner city growers to be able to farm in a restricted space. Vertical farming is the practice of growing crops, especially leafy vegetables such as lettuce, in vertically stacked layers, as this results in significantly higher plant population per unit area. Two research trials were conducted in the fall of 2018 and the spring of 2019 to …

A network analysis can quantify the depth and breadth of a farmer’s relationships with other local farmers, buyers and sellers, or other groups and organizations. Such an analysis can potentially also reveal farmers’ incentives, situations, and behaviors, and it may explain their economic success more generally. This study examines small and minority farmers’ networks using a primary survey in three farming communities. We emphasize networks related to production, marketing, and resource-sharing activities of 127 farmers (nodes) in Tennessee, 46 in Maryland, and 23 in Delaware, and compute three different measures of network importance or “centrality” for each farmer. We then …
Investigating Bat Activity In Various Agricultural Landscapes In Northeastern United States, Katherine Harms, Emmanuel Omondi, Atanu Mukherjee
Investigating Bat Activity In Various Agricultural Landscapes In Northeastern United States, Katherine Harms, Emmanuel Omondi, Atanu Mukherjee
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Bats are estimated to provide between $3.7 and $53 billion annually in ecosystem services in the U.S.A. Determining how bats use land for foraging is important in planning agricultural landscapes to increase their presence and role in insect pest control. A research project was established in 2016 and 2017 to determine bat populations and activity differences between different land use management systems. Bat activity was monitored in 10 conventionally and organically managed systems in the presence of, and at a distance from the tree line. Two acoustic monitoring devices were used to record ultrasonic echolocation calls of bats. Organic systems …
Rural Finance, Capital Constrained Small Farms, And Financial Performance: Findings From A Primary Survey, Aditya R. Khanal, Omobolaji Omobitan
Rural Finance, Capital Constrained Small Farms, And Financial Performance: Findings From A Primary Survey, Aditya R. Khanal, Omobolaji Omobitan
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Capital and credit constraints limit the small farm’s ability to adequately use resources for optimum performance. Farmers’ access to capital is constrained in multiple ways, including price factors, risk factors, and transaction factors, as well as access to and ease of rural agricultural financing. Using a primary survey data of small farms in Tennessee, we analyzed factors influencing credit constraint and its impact on farm performance. Farm operators’ gender, off-farm work, land acreage holdings, farm specialization, and the use of smart phone with Internet significantly influenced credit constraint. We found that the financial performance of credit constrained small farmers was …
