SDSU Extension Special Reports
In 2011, SDSU Extension faced significant state and federal budget cuts (FY2012), which meant the concept of a traditional Extension system would not be financially feasible. In response to these cuts, SDSU Extension implemented a new staffing model, reorganized into eight Regional Extension Centers and emphasized a web-based delivery system through www.iGrow.org. How did these changes impact SDSU Extension’s ability to support its land-grant mission to provide educational programs that strengthen agriculture and natural resources, families and communities? To find out, SDSU Extension contracted with a third-party marketing firm to interview 400 crop and livestock producers throughout South Dakota. The …

A Comparison Of Corn Yield Forecasting Models, Nicholas Jorgensen
A Comparison Of Corn Yield Forecasting Models, Nicholas Jorgensen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to compare and analyze several different yield forecasting methods. The study analyzes corn yields in Ohio and South Dakota for the years 1986 through 2012. A base model, with a trend and state dummy variable is developed. Two competing models, one with objective variables and one with subjective variables, are then developed as additions to the base model. The competing objective model is developed by adding accumulated growing degree days (GDD) and accumulated rainfall variables. The competing subjective model is developed by adding a USDA crop conditions index (CCI) variable. The models are estimated …

This paper summarises discussions by invited speakers during a special session at the 6th North American Duck Symposium on wetland issues that affect waterfowl, highlighting current ecosystem challenges and opportunities for the conservation of waterfowl in North America. Climate change, invasive species, U.S. agricultural policy (which can encourage wetland drainage and the expansion of row-crop agriculture into grasslands), cost and competition for water rights, and wetland management for non-waterfowl species were all considered to pose significant threats to waterfowl populations in the near future. Waterfowl populations were found to be faced with significant threats in several regions, including: the Central …

With the advent of the free U.S. Landsat data policy it is now feasible to consider the generation of global coverage 30 m Landsat data sets with temporal reporting frequency similar to that provided by the monthly Web Enabled Landsat (WELD) products. A statistical Landsat metadata analysis is reported considering more than 800,000 Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 7 ETM + acquisitions obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center archive. The global monthly probabilities of acquiring a cloud-free land surface observation for December 1998 to November 2001 (2000 epoch) and from December 2008 …

Although most pests of soybeans, Gycine max (L.), in the Northern Great Plains are managed using pesticides, farm management practices that encourage biodiversity offer promising long-term, sustainable solutions for controlling insect and weed pests profitably. The recent invasion of the Northern Great Plains by the soybean aphid (Aphis glycinesMatsumura; Hemiptera: Aphididae) has had potentially important implications for insect communities in soybeans of this region, although recent descriptions of this regional community are scarce. We describe how three pest management systems that vary in the intensity with which they rely on herbicides and insecticides (chemically intensive, reduced chemical, and …
Energy In The Corn Belt: Is Maize Production Sustainable?, Matthew Bernau
Energy In The Corn Belt: Is Maize Production Sustainable?, Matthew Bernau
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Technological and scientific innovation has transformed agricultural production. Corn production methods changed from a sustainable, nutrient recycling production system to one reliant on imported fossil energy inputs. Located in the Western Corn Belt, Union County, South Dakota was chosen as the study area. Changes in production methods are represented by four technological epochs: 1) The Draft Horse Epoch, 1890-1920; 2) The Tractor Epoch, 1920-1950; 3) The Fertilizer Epoch, 1950-1980; and 4) The Biotechnology and Precision Agriculture Epoch, 1980-2010. The energy budget method was used to measure the energy sustainability of corn production. The findings show that the volume of corn …

Considerations When Marketing Commodities Far Ahead Of Harvest, Matthew Diersen, Scott W. Fausti, Emmanuel Opoku
Economics Pamphlet Series (1985-2016)
Crop and livestock producers face a complex challenge when marketing. High commodity prices give a strong incentive to sell, price, or protect revenue far ahead of the traditional cash sale date. However, high and volatile input costs such as rent, fertilizer and feed work against locking in a profit. What follows is a general overview of preliminary material for a series of workshops and programming. The outline of the document and workshops is similar. At the beginning of the workshops (or components) we ask a series of questions of participants. We provide the general format of those here. Then we …

Seedling Root Morphology Of Six Alfalfa Populations, Brianna J. Gaughan
Seedling Root Morphology Of Six Alfalfa Populations, Brianna J. Gaughan
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
Seedling root morphology plays a crucial role in seedling survival and stand establishment. Naturalized yellow-flowered alfalfa (YFA) (Medicago sativa subsp. falcata) has demonstrated adaptation to semiarid conditions of the Northern Great Plains and tolerance to grazing. Seedling stage root morphology is poorly defined. Our objective was to compare morphological traits of seedling roots for six alfalfa populations. Six entries were evaluated: one M. sativa population as a control, two M. falcata entries, with reported “spreading characteristics” and three naturalized YFA populations. Uniform seeds of each entry were scarified with 320 grade sand paper and inoculated with rhizobium before planting. A …

Great Plains Soils May Be C Sinks, David E. Clay, Gregg C. Carlson, Sharon A. Clay, James Stone, Kurtis Reitsma, Ronald Gelderman
Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications
Numerous studies with wide-ranging results have been conducted to resolve if Great Plains soils are a C source or sink. The authors addressed the source/sink question by examining the results from producer soil samples and production surveys that were analyzed and archived by the South Dakota Soil Testing Laboratory. Results showed that between 1985 and 2010, soil organic C content increased at a rate of 326 lb C/A/year, for a total increase of 24%. The increase was attributed to planting better adapted varieties and using better management practices that on average increased corn grain yields 2.29 bu/A/year. Higher soil organic …

Preference Of White-Tailed Deer For Corn Hybrids And Agricultural Husbandry Practices During The Growing Season, Joshua A. Delger, Kevin L. Monteith, Lowell E. Schmitz, Jonathan A. Jenks
Preference Of White-Tailed Deer For Corn Hybrids And Agricultural Husbandry Practices During The Growing Season, Joshua A. Delger, Kevin L. Monteith, Lowell E. Schmitz, Jonathan A. Jenks
Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications
Damage to field corn (Zea mays) by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) can be substantial, resulting in millions of dollars lost annually. Numerous methods exist to minimize deer depredation, but all have met with varying degrees of success. Currently, little information is available on preference of white-tailed deer for corn hybrids during the growing season and how that preference might affect depredation patterns. We used adult female white-tailed deer in captivity to study the effect of herbicide treatments on deer-use (treatment versus no treatment) of corn in 2005 and to document preference among specific corn hybrids in …

SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
This guide contains a list of fungicides labeled for use in South Dakota at the time of publication. The list is dynamic and prone to frequent changes. It therefore should not be considered as a substitute for label information. Always read and follow label directions for approved uses of these products, and check with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture for up-to-date product registration information.
