Postharvest Performance Of Cut Marigold, Rose, And Sunflower Stems As Influenced By Homemade And Commercial Floral Preservatives, Iftikhar Ahmad, John Martin Dole

Effects of homemade or commercial floral preservatives, applied as 48-h grower treatments or continuous retailer/consumer applications, were studied on cut Double Eagle marigold, Red Bentley rose, and Sunbright sunflower. Cut stems of marigold placed in preservative solutions, irrespective of the duration, had a longer vase life than stems in tap water. Continuous use of soda (7 Up) or citric-Kathon and short-term use of citric-Al resulted in the longest extension of vase life. Cut stems of rose had the longest vase life when pulsed with citric-Kathon for 48 h or continuously placed in citric-Al until termination. For sunflower, use of citric-Kathon …

The main objective of this study was to implement a spatial model with a multicriteria assessment approach for rice (Oryza sativa L.) land suitability by using geographic information system (GIS) techniques. The land mapping units resulting from the overlay of the selected theme layers had unique land quality information on which land suitability was based. The selected theme layers of rice include topographic factor (slope), soil physical factors (soil depth, soil texture, drainage, stoniness, hydraulic conductivity), and soil chemical factors (pH, electrical conductivity, CaCO_3, soil fertility). The photoperiodic sensitivity and storage of Orius majusculus (Reuter) from Antalya was investigated to obtain data for the optimization of its release. In the current study, it was not possible to induce a high (up to 100%) incidence of diapause unless all the nymphal instars and adults were successively exposed (i.e. full exposure) to a short day length (11.5 h) at constant temperatures of 18 and 26 °C, and fluctuating temperatures of 10/26 °C. This study aimed to determine the physicochemical properties of the green tea powders produced from 2 different Turkish tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) O.Kuntze] clones (Derepazarı 7 and Fener) grown under different shade levels and harvested during 2 consecutive shooting periods. Moisture, ash, crude fiber, and total phenolic contents of the green tea powders were determined based on the experimental factors. Products were also evaluated for their water activity, bulk density, particle size, color, extraction yield, and antioxidant activity. A nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) was isolated from diseased larvae of the eastern tent caterpillar, Malacosoma americanum (Fabricius), collected from the northeastern part of Turkey. Light and electron microscopic observations showed that this virus is a multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (MNPV). The dimensions of the polyhedral inclusion bodies varied from 1.0 to 2.1 µm, and the sizes of the virions were also measured to be approximately 194.5 nm. Restriction analysis of the new isolate and ManeNPV-T2 (previously isolated from M. neustria larvae) showed that the new virus is closely related to ManeNPV-T2. Erosion is one of the important problems in degradation of agricultural lands and other natural lands. The most dynamic factor in controlling erosion is land cover, and this factor has been anthropogenically manipulated for ages. This study investigates the effect of land use and land cover changes (LULCC) on erosion at Kuseyr Plateau, which is situated in the southernmost part of the eastern Mediterranean basin, Turkey. Fifty-four progenies of Melia azedarach selected from 11 geographical locations in India were evaluated for different growth parameters at the seed farm at Ladhowal, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India. Significant differences were observed among and within progenies for all characters at the age of 8 years. Progeny number 1 exhibited superior growth for all traits except clear bole height and number of branches. High narrow-sense heritability (progeny basis, within-progeny basis, and individual plant basis) was higher for mean annual increments for total height and diameter at breast height than other recorded growth parameters. Orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) genotypes from different natural sources in the Eastern Anatolian Region of Turkey were clonally evaluated to study genetic variation and the relationships between seed yield and its components using a randomized complete block design. Helianthus annuus is one of the most important oil species, with a comparatively narrow genetic base. The development of new sunflower cultivars is the focus of many research and breeding programs. Intergeneric hybridization between H. annuus and Echinacea purpurea, a valuable medicinal plant, has not yet been utilized in cultivar development. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza spp.) is an important medicinal plant and its distribution of natural habitats has been shrinking day by day due to extensive collection. Genetic diversity identification will likely assist in conserving the different Glycyrrhiza species. A total of 127 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers from Medicago truncatula Gaertn., Phaseolus vulgaris L., and Cicer arietinum L. were used and 26 of them were amplified on Glycyrrhiza genomes. Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is one of the most destructive pests of several vegetables and fruits worldwide. In spite of various control methods, this pest has still continued to cause significant damage. In this study, the culturable bacterial flora of S. littoralis was determined. New isolates from S. littoralis, as well as 12 different Bacillus isolates belong to 5 species that were previously isolated from different pests, were tested on S. littoralis larvae. The present work was a study on the adverse effects of salinity on growth, nodulation, and some physiological parameters in 4 symbiotic combinations involving 2 Moroccan alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) populations (Demnate and Tata) and 2 rhizobial strains (rhLAr 1 and rhLAr 4).
