Taxsonomical States Of Lacerta Viridis (Lacertidae) Populations From Turkey, İ. Ethem Çevi̇k, Yusuf Kumlutaş

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In this research, , A total of 64 MM and 37 VV adult specimens from Turkish Thrace and 158 MM and 188 VV adult specimens from Anatolia were investigated comparatively as two separate populations groups to determine the subspecific status of the species in Turkey. No significant differences are discernible between the two population groups from the viewpoints of pholidosis, morphometrical measurements and rations and pattern and coloration characteıistics. So the Turkish L. viridis populations belong to a single subspecies L. v. meridionalis.

Rodent Fauna Of Imbros And Tenedos (Mammalia:Rodentia), Beytullah Özkan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Imbros and Tenedos,Northern islands of Eagean Sea,were visited as a total of 122 days between 1990-1992 and 449 rodent samples were collected. In Imbros,7 rodent species (Sciurus anomalus,Apodemus flavicollis,Apodemus sylvaticus,Rattus rattus,Rattus norvegicus,Mus macedonicus,Spalax leucodon)belonging to 3 families (Sciuridae,Muridae,Spalacidae)and in Tenedos,4 species (Apodemus hermonensis,Rattus rattus,Mus domesticus,Spalax leucodon)of 2 families (Muridae,Spalacidae) were determined. Using the information about their ecological features, morphological comporision of same aged rodent samples from islands with the Thrace and Northwest Anatolia was carried out.As a result of the comparision,it was found that Sciurus of Imbros, Apodemus and Spalax samples of Tenedos showed similarity to the samples from Northwest Anatolia, whereas Apodemus …

Soil samples were taken monthly from Bozkır, Ilgın, Karabağ, Karapınar and Yarma between September 1993 and September 1995. They were extracted with a modified Berlese-Tullgreen apparatus. The oribatid mites collected from the soil samples were preserved in glycerol until examination. Specimens were cleared in lactic acid before microscopic observation. Approximately 70,000 oribatid mite specimens were studied and found to consist of 56 species belonging to 34 genera and 22 families. Of these …

Isolation Of Sperm Storage Tubules From The Uterovaginal Junction Mucosa Of The Turkey, L. M. King, J. P. Brillard, M. R. Bakst, A. M. Donoghue

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

This study was performed to determine whether intact sperm storage tubules (SST) could be successfully isolated from the uterovaginal junction (UVJ) mucosa of the turkey. Large White BUTA hens were inseminated and euthanatized 24 to 48 h later. Oviducts were excised, UVJ tissue removed, and SST were procured by enzymatic digestion. Recovered SST were intact and contained motile sperm. The sperm were oriented with their acrosomes pointed towards the distal end of the SST, and their long axes in parallel with the long axis of the tubule’s lumen. This method for the isolation of intact SST can be readily applied …

The Woody Vegetation Of The Kelkit Valley, Fergan Karaer, Mahmut Kilinç, H. Güray Kutbay

Turkish Journal of Botany

In this work, the forest, macchie and hygrophilous vegetation of Kelkit Valley was studied. Interesingly the study area is a transitional zone along the boundries of Central Anatolia and the Central and East Black Sea regions. From the phytogeographical point of view this area is situated between the Euro-Siberian and Irano-Turanian floristic regions. This study was carried out according to the Braun-Blanquet method. Twelve plant associations and 2 subassociations were identified belonging to four different vegetation types. Ten of the associations and two subasociations here are determined as new associations. Vegetation tables are given.

The prevalence rates of fasciolosis hepatica and dicrocoeliosis dendriticum were 3.99% and 23.55% in sheep, and 0.48% and 2.65% in cattle respectively. No changes in livers, which led to the partial or total condemnation, were observed.

Cumulative feed consumptions of turkeys reared in intensive and semi-intensive conditions were determined as 13562.0±50.0 g and 12415.0±100.0 g at the end of 16. weeks, respectively. Difference between these values …

Physiology And Reproduction: Gross Appearance Of The Turkey Blastoderm At Oviposition, M. R. Bakst, S. K. Gupta, W. Potts, V. Akuffo Jan 1998

Physiology And Reproduction: Gross Appearance Of The Turkey Blastoderm At Oviposition, M. R. Bakst, S. K. Gupta, W. Potts, V. Akuffo

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The blastoderm (fertilized ovum) and unfertilized germinal disc (UGD) of fresh laid eggs and eggs stored prior to incubation exhibit subtle but definable morphological variations. Such variations may lead to difficulty when attempting to determine true flock fertility based on the appearance of the blastoderm/UGD. The objectives of this study were to define and categorize such morphological variations and to determine whether sperm influence the frequency distribution of the different categories. Eleven categories of blastoderms were defined based on the relative density and appearance of the area alba, area pellucida, area opaca, and the periblast. The majority of the blastoderms …

Hot-Packaging Reduces Lipid Oxidation And Improves Sensory Characteristics Of Cooked Turkey Meat, Maiko Ishikawa, Dong U. Ahn Jan 1997

Hot-Packaging Reduces Lipid Oxidation And Improves Sensory Characteristics Of Cooked Turkey Meat, Maiko Ishikawa, Dong U. Ahn

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The effects of two vacuum packaging methods (hot and cold vacuum packaging) on the storage stability and sensory characteristics of cooked meat were compared. Ground turkey breast and leg meat patties were cooked, vacuum packaged appropriately, and stored up to 22 days. Lipid oxidation was measured by the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) test. In addition, Total aerobic count and sensory evaluation (flavor, juiciness, tenderness, overall acceptability) were conducted. There was no significant difference in aerobic plate count by packaging methods; however, panelist rating revealed that hot-packaged turkey leg meat had higher juiciness and overall acceptability scores than cold-packaged ones. Although TBARS …

G94-1226 Blackhead Disease In Turkeys, Sheila Scheideler, Eva Wallner-Pendleton

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Blackhead disease is a common and serious illness in turkeys that no available medication can treat. This NebGuide discusses the organisms that cause the disease and prevention strategies.

Raising small turkey home flocks in the early summer and late fall is extremely popular in Nebraska. Most of these birds are destined for slaughter just before Thanksgiving and are sold for the holiday market. Extension educators and specialists receive many calls concerning sick turkeys in the late summer and early fall months from flock owners concerned about whether their turkeys have Blackhead. Most poultry flock owners have heard of this disease …
