The Taxonomy And Biology Of Strauzia (Diptera: Tephritidae), W. Bryan Stoltzfus
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The North American genus Strauzia is revised. Five new species are included with keys to adults of the 12 known species. Host plant, important larval characteristics, and life cycle information are given for 11 of the species. The evolution of the genus is discussed and 14 host plants are reported. All species bore in the stems of Asteraceae, pupariate in the crown area or in the soil, and are univoltine.

Revision Of The Genus Anoda (Malvaceae), Paul A. Fryxell
Revision Of The Genus Anoda (Malvaceae), Paul A. Fryxell
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
A revision of the genus Anoda is presented that recognizes 23 species, of which ten are described as new. The genus includes annual herbs, subshrubs, and occasionally shrubs and occurs from the southern United States to Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. Most of this distributional range, however, is accounted for by a single species, A. cristata, which also occurs as an adventive in a few other parts of the world. The genus is principally Mexican, all of the species occurring within that country. Anoda is closely allied to the genus Periptera, also a Mexican genus, and the two genera share …

New Or Noteworthy Species Of Flowering Plants From The Sierra Madre De Sur Of Guerrero And Michoacán, Mexico, Paul A. Fryxell, Stephen D. Koch
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
The Sierra Madre del Sur of Pacific coastal Mexico has been of limited accessibility and therefore not well explored botanically. Only G. B. Hinton and E. Langlasse have made significant collections from the area. More recent collections by the authors have resulted in the recognition of nine new species, described herein as follows: Acanthaceae—Elytraria rnexieana; Malvaceae—Bastardiastrurn batesii, Gossypiurn schwendirnanii, Hibiscus zygornorphus, Kosteletzkya flavicentrum, Periptera lobelioides, Sida fastuosa, and Sida prolifiea; and Tumeraceae—Piriquetia mexieana. Other species meriting specific comment include Dioseorea insignis (Dioscoreaceae), Anotea flavida (Malvaceae), and Helieteres rekoi …

Hirschmanniella Pomponiensis N. Sp. (Nemata: Pratylenchidae), Parasitic On Bulrush, Scirpus Robustus Pursh, Fawzia Abdel-Rahman, Armand R. Maggenti
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
A new species of Hirschmanniella was found in bulrush roots; LM and SEM morphological studies revealed that it is distinct from other species in the genus. Therefore, it is designated Hirschmanniella pomponiensis n. sp. Six lips are fused to form a hexagonal labial plate, six inner sensilla encircle the stoma opening, and four cephalic sensilla open in the corners of subdorsal and subventral lips. Cephalic lip region consists of six or seven annuli. The female has incomplete areolation in the lateral field, the intestine overlaps the rectum, the tail tip is pointed and without annulation.

Marsupial And Monotreme Enamel Structure, K. S. Lester, A. Boyde, C. Gilkeson, M. Archer
Scanning Microscopy
We present some recent developments in our understanding of two basic questions: the origin, extent, nature and course of marsupial enamel tubules; and the characterisation of monotreme enamel, more particularly, the prismatic nature of platypus enamel.
Methods used included SEM of methacrylate casts of marsupial enamel tubules, worn and cut surfaces of whole marsupial teeth, developing and erupted platypus teeth, and a well-developed molar of the newly discovered Miocene ornithorhynchid Obdurodon sp., and tandem scanning reflected light microscopy of intact marsupial teeth.
We conclude that there are significant species differences with respect to prism shape, row formation and tubule disposition …

Laboulbeniales On Semiaquatic Hemiptera. V. Triceromyces, Richard K. Benjamin
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Six species of Triceromyces (Laboulbeniales), including the type, T. balazucii (on Hebridae), parasitic on semiaquatic Hemiptera, were studied at the light-microscopic level. Descriptions are provided for all of the taxa, and features of developmental morphology are described, compared, and illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Four species are described as new: T. hebri (on Hebridae), T. hydrometrae (on Hydrometridae), and T. biformis and T. bullatus (on Mesoveliidae). The species growing on Hebridae and Hydrometridae are monoecious. The two species on Mesoveliidae develop monoecious and dioecious morphs, which occur together on the same host individual. This phenomenon is recognized and described …

Taxonomy Of The Allium Tribracteatum (Alliaceae) Complex, William R. Mortola, Dale W. Mcneal
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Allium tribracteatum and related species present a confusing array in California. Previous attempts at classification have been largely unsuccessful and keys that are available are unworkable. Herbarium and field studies were initiated to ascertain if previously overlooked characteristics could be found that would elucidate relationships within the group. Members of the complex were examined morphologically and cytologically. Based on these investigations four of the seven previously described taxa are considered valid: A. cratericola, A. obtusum, A. tribracteatum, and A. yosemitense. Allium tribracteatum is redefined and A. obtusum is divided into two varieties. Allium obtusum var. conspicuum …

Morphology And Relationships Of A New Species Of Microsomyces (Ascomycetes: Laboulbeniales) From Illinois, Richard K. Benjamin
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Microsomyces telephani, a new species of Laboulbeniaceae, is described from collections found on Telephanus velox (Coleoptera: Cucujidae) from Illinois. Features of development and maturity of the new species are illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Microsomyces telephani differs from the type and previously only known species of the genus, M. psammoechi, in its larger, more highly corticated receptacle, which bears secondary appendages, and in its larger primary appendage, which typically bears several antheridial phialides. Among known genera of Laboulbeniales, Microsomyces is thought to be most closely related to Cucujomyces.

Systematics And Palynology Of Picrodendron Further Evidence For Relationship With The Oldfieldioideae (Euphorbiaceae), W. John Hayden, W. T. Gillis, D. E. Stone, C. R. Broome, G. L. Webster
Biology Faculty Publications
Although known to botanical science for 285 years, the genus Picrodendron Planchon has been poorly understood for most of this time. The most pervasive problem has been that of discerning familial relationships, and there have been additional difficulties in typifying the generic name (Hayden & Reveal, 1980) and in distinguishing its three nominate species. This paper provides a systematic treatment for Picrodendron and demonstrates its relationships with Euphorbiaceae subfam. Oldfieldioideae Kohler & Webster as evidenced by data on gross morphology, palynology, anatomy, and cytology.

Taxonomy And Distribution Of Edotea (= Tropedotea) Lyonsi (Menzies And Kruczynski, 1983) N. Comb. (Crustacea: Isopoda: Idoteidae), Gary D. Goeke, Richard W. Heard Jr.
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Tropedotea lyonsi Menzies and Kruczynski, 1983, is reported from the waters off Alabama southeastward to Cape Romano, Florida. The monotypic genus Tropedotea was recently erected on the basis of coxal plates of pereonites V to VI1 visible in dorsal view and a reduced number of articles in both antennae. Pereonites V to VI11 are also visible in dorsal view in Edotea Guérin-Ménéville, 1843, and the number of articles in antenna 1 and 2 of Tropedotea Menzies and Kruczynski, 1983, is the same as in Edotea. Hence Tropedotea lyonsi is assigned to the genus Edotea and Tropedotea is designated a …

Petalacte has been in continuous use for this genus of 1-3 species since proposed by D. Don. The only exception was Lessing's misuse of Petalolepis Cassini, from which he excluded the two original Australian species and substituted two from S. Africa. Lessing was not followed by later authors.T he genus was recently revised by Lundgren (in Bot. Notiser 127: 119-124. 1974) and this revision may be consulted for full references.

A Taxonomic And Ecologic Study Of The Riverbottom Forest On St. Mary River, Lee Creek And Belly River In Southwest Alberta, Canada, Robert Keith Shaw
Theses and Dissertations
The riverbottom forest community of St. Mary River, Lee Creek and Belly River in southwest Alberta, Canada is a unique ecological entity characterized by poplar species having their major Alberta distribution along these streams. Stands in the community are dominated by three tree species, six shrub species and nine herb species. Establishment of the community is dependent on climate and substrate; destruction is the result of progressive lateral stream-flow erosion. Soils are sandy loams above gravel, with pH values of 7.7 to 8.0 and soluble salt concentration of 176 to 458 parts per million. Trees in mature stands averaged 23.0 …
