The human gut microbiome plays a vital role in preserving individual health and is intricately involved in essential functions. Imbalances or dysbiosis within the microbiome can significantly impact human health and are associated with many diseases. Several metaproteomics platforms are currently available to study microbial proteins within complex microbial communities. In this study, we attempted to develop an integrated pipeline to provide deeper insights into both the taxonomic and functional aspects of the cultivated human gut microbiomes derived from clinical colon biopsies. We combined a rapid peptide search by MSFragger against the Unified Human Gastrointestinal Protein database and the taxonomic …

Abstract
The combined study of Ochodaeus montanus Fuente, 1912 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea: Ochodaeidae) type material and recently collected specimens from the southeastern Iberian Peninsula provided evidence for the description of new specific morphological characters, and to clarify recurring mistakes present in the literature. A comparative study between O. montanus and its closest representative, O. inermis Reitter, 1892, was completed. An updated distribution map of O. montanus as well as a bilingual identification key for the four taxa occurring within the Iberian Peninsula is given.

We describe a new species of miniaturized gecko (genus Pseudogonatodes) from the Peninsula de Paria in northeastern Venezuela. Externally, the new species resembles Pseudogonatodes furvus and Pseudogonatodes manessi, from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia and the Central Coastal Range in Venezuela, respectively; however, it differs from these species in terms of molecular genetic data (12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, and c-mos), osteological characters, and scale counts. The new species is unique in skull osteology, and we adopt the term ‘telescoped’ from the literature to describe the overlap of bones in the snout, in particular the …

Lolium Canariense: An Endemic Ryegrass From Canary Islands, J A. Oliveira, G Charmet, F Balfourier, C Ravel
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The taxonomic position of the endemic Lolium canariense within the genus Lolium has been Investigated by starch gel electrophoresis of 7 isozyme loci. Preliminary results show that L. canariense is preferentially autogamous, with an outcrossing rate of 0.08-0.16. II displays an average gene diversity of intermediate value between that of the strict inbreeder L. persicum and those of the outbreeders L. perenne, L. multiflorum and L. rlgidum. The hierarchical clustering from Nei's genetic distance (Genelics 1978) suggests that L. canariense is clearly differentiated from the group of outbreeding species

During studies on the taxonomical delimitation of some species of Funalia, some inconsistencies were observed in the genus. Based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses, Fomitella supina was positioned within the Funalia clade, thus the synonymization of the genus and the new combination of F. supina are proposed. Funalia glabrorigens is also combinated in the genus, while Coriolopsis hainanensis is suggested as a synonym of F. floccosa and F. rigida is assumed as a distinct species from F. floccosa. A table with morphological comparison of the 10 Funalia species confirmed by molecular analyses is also presented.

Mattiastrum Pulumurense (Cynoglossinae, Boraginaceae), A New Endemic Species From Türkiye, Asli Doğru Koca, Mustafa Gökmen, Gülderen Yilmaz, Mehmet Yavuz Paksoy
Turkish Journal of Botany
A new species, Mattiastrum pulumurense, has been described from Tunceli in eastern Turkey. It is generally distinguished from other species (except M. racemosum var. scabridum) by a sparsely hairy or glabrescent above-ground part. It is most similar morphologically to M. longipes, M. calycinum and Paracaryum hedgei (P. hedgei is potential a member of the genus Mattiastrum). However, it differs from M. longipes and M. calycinum by its 3-3.5 mm long and linear lanceolate scales, 2.5-4.5 mm long anthers, and 10-15 mm long styles; it differs from Paracaryum hedgei by its 3-3.5 mm long scales, 2.5-4.5 mm long anthers. The Biology Of The Facultative Halophyte Atriplex Patula L., Richard Stalter, Robert I. Lonard
The Biology Of The Facultative Halophyte Atriplex Patula L., Richard Stalter, Robert I. Lonard
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Atriplex patula L. is a facultative halophyte that tolerates low to moderate levels of salinity and occurs on the margins of coastal salt marshes, roadsides, in agricultural fields, and in other areas where disturbance has occurred. The genus Atriplex L. is represented by about 250 species globally and has recently been included in the family Amaranthaceae subfamily Chenopodioidae. Atriplex patula was possibly introduced in North America from Europe, Asia or North Africa in the 18th century. Because the stems and leaves accumulate and store heavy metal pollutants, A. patula has been suggested for use in habitat remediation.

This review was crafted to clear up some of the current confusion regarding the correct taxonomic placement of those apicomplexan coccidians that produce unique monosporocystic octosporozoic (1 sporocyst with 8 sporozoites) oocysts during the sexual phase of their life history in vertebrate hosts. Currently, such oocysts have been placed in 1 of 4 genera, Avispora, Caryospora, Karyospora, or Eumonospora, 2 of which are no longer accepted or useful (Avispora and Karyospora). My review suggests that to present (2023) there are 62 valid Caryospora and 26 valid Eumonospora species. Caryospora species are recorded from a bird …

A Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Population Dynamics Of A Captive Colony Of Diploptera Punctata., Nick Peterson
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
The unique milk production of Diploptera punctata makes this species a promising model species in entomology for studying the evolution of milk production and for insect endocrinology. Despite this, the genetic diversity of captive populations of the species is not well studied. To better evaluate the captive diversity and population dynamics of Diploptera punctata at UNO we extracted the DNA of 20 random individuals and amplified their DNA using 4 different primers before cleaning the amplified products and sequencing the genes of the samples for use in both individual and concatenated phylogenetic trees. Our results indicate the UNO colony of …

From 221 specimens of 17 species of cnidarian medusae and 218 specimens of four species of ctenophores, infections were found in seven cnidarian and two ctenophore species. Metacercariae were distinguished using cox1 mtDNA, ITS2 rDNA and morphology. We identified three species of Prodistomum Linton, 1910 [P. keyam Bray & Cribb, 1996, P. orientale (Layman, 1930), and Prodistomum Type 3], two species of Opechona Looss, 1907 [O. kahawai Bray & Cribb, 2003 and O. cf. olssoni], and Cephalolepidapedon saba Yamaguti, 1970. Two species were found in cnidarians …

Recent biological surveys of ancient inselbergs in southern Malawi and northern Mozambique have led to the discovery and description of many species new to science, and overlapping centres of endemism across multiple taxa. Combining these endemic taxa with data on geology and climate, we propose the 'South East Africa Montane Archipelago' (SEAMA) as a distinct ecoregion of global biological importance. The ecoregion encompasses 30 granitic inselbergs reaching > 1000 m above sea level, hosting the largest (Mt Mabu) and smallest (Mt Lico) mid-elevation rainforests in southern Africa, as well as biologically unique montane grasslands. Endemic taxa include 127 plants, 45 vertebrates …
