G90-964 How Soil Holds Water, Norman L. Klocke, Gary W. Hergert Jan 1990

G90-964 How Soil Holds Water, Norman L. Klocke, Gary W. Hergert

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide describes the physical characteristics that influence how soil holds water.

Dryland and irrigationd agriculture depend on the management of two basic natural resources, soil and water. Soil is the supporting structure of plant life and water is essential to sustain plant life. The wise use of these resources requires a basic understanding of soil and water as well as the crop.

The available water capacity and characteristics of soils are critical to water management planning for irrigationd and dryland crops. The management decisions of what crops to plant, plant populations, when to irrigation, how much to irrigation, when …

Some Effects Of Shifting To Conservation Tillage Systems For Intensive Production Of Corn And Soybean, Kenneth L. Wells, H. C. Vaught, David Heisterburg Mar 1989

Some Effects Of Shifting To Conservation Tillage Systems For Intensive Production Of Corn And Soybean, Kenneth L. Wells, H. C. Vaught, David Heisterburg

Agronomy Notes

About three-fourths of Kentucky's cropland base occurs on sloping land with some degree of erosion hazard. During the past decade, production of soybeans and corn increased rapidly in Kentucky, particularly on sloping land. This resulted in severe erosion on many farms, particularly in the "intensive grain producing counties. Much of this field erosion could be greatly reduced by developing a system for each field that would incorporate use of such agronomic practices as sod waterways, no-till planting, contour plowing, minimum tillage, strip cropping, double-cropping, winter cover crops, crop residue management and rotations. It is believed that the current acreage of …

Ada Hayden: A Tribute, Duane Isely Jan 1989

Ada Hayden: A Tribute, Duane Isely

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Dr. Ada Hayden was a member of the Iowa State College of Botany faculty, 1920-1950. Her floristic studies of the lake region in northern Iowa are possibly the most authoritative for any part of the state. Hayden was curator of the Iowa State herbarium, 1934-1950, and contributed immeasurably to its development. This research facility has recently been named the Ada Hayden Herbarium. In the sense that L. H. Pammel was father of the Iowa State park system, her bequest is the state preserves. After some 25 years as a conservation activist, she published descriptions of 22 prairie areas in ten …

Africa's Conservation For Development, Norman Miller, Rodger Yeager Jan 1987

Africa's Conservation For Development, Norman Miller, Rodger Yeager

Dartmouth Scholarship

Africa's modern dilemma is a "floor of life" issue. Resource loss, environmental degredation, and overpopulation have reduced many people to the lowest subsistence levels in living memory. By all accounts a biologically diverse wonderland, Africa is quite literally the last place on earth for many plant and animal species. Yet the basis of human and nonhuman survival has become threatened in many areas because of soil and water depletion, deforestation, and desertification. Human mistakes are invariably cited as among the basic causes of these tragedies.

Applications Of X-Ray Microanalysis To The Study And Conservation Of Ancient Glasses, S. Hreglich, M. Verita Jun 1986

Applications Of X-Ray Microanalysis To The Study And Conservation Of Ancient Glasses, S. Hreglich, M. Verita

Scanning Electron Microscopy

X-ray microanalysis can be successfully applied to the study of the chemical composition and weathering processes of ancient glass. The problems concerned with this kind of application are considered. A verification is conducted of the accuracy and sensitivity of this technique, which are sufficient to obtain useful information on technologies and raw materials used and consequently on the origin and dating of ancient glasses.

This analytical method also discloses meaningful data for the optimization of restoration and the choice of appropriate conservation operations.

Wildlife Conservation And Animal Rights: Are They Compatible?, Michael Hutchins, Christen Wemmer Jan 1986

Wildlife Conservation And Animal Rights: Are They Compatible?, Michael Hutchins, Christen Wemmer

Conservation Collection

The purpose of this paper is to explore the philosophical tenets of the animal rights/humane ethic as they relate to the environmental ethic and, more specifically, as they relate to wildlife management and conservation. The two ethics will be compared in an effort to identify potential sources of conflict. Recent criticisms of the animal rights ethic, most notably by Fox (1978, 1979), Rodman (1977), Callicott (1980), Gunn (1980), and Hutchins et al. (1982) have identified several major discrepancies. The implications of these differences will be discussed.

Physical Properties Of Tar Sand Tailings That Influence Their Ability To Sustain Plant Growth, Timothy Cole Jul 1985

Physical Properties Of Tar Sand Tailings That Influence Their Ability To Sustain Plant Growth, Timothy Cole

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The mining of bituminous sandstone rock for the purpose of extracting bitumen has created a need for reclamation. One such mine is located in northern Logan County. Their mining operation involves removing large sections of sandstone, which is impregnated with bitumen, and crushing it to sand-sized material. The sand-sized material is then mixed with organic solvents which extract the bitumen. Once separated, the bitumen is stored for future refinement and the spent sand is stockpiled for later disposal.

The spent sands or waste material are referred to as tar sand tailings. These tailings have particular properties which make reclamation efforts …

G85-750 Terrace Systems For Nebraska, Elbert C. Dickey, Tom Hamer, Delynn Hay, Paul J. Jasa

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide describes how different terrace shapes and systems can be used to reduce soil erosion losses on sloping fields. Loss of valuable topsoil to erosion prompted Nebraska farmers to build terraces as early as the 1920's. Current estimates indicate that water erodes as much as 140 million tons of soil annually from Nebraska's fields.

Striving For Common Ground: Humane And Scientific Considerations In Contemporary Wildlife Management, Stephen R. Kellert Jan 1982

Striving For Common Ground: Humane And Scientific Considerations In Contemporary Wildlife Management, Stephen R. Kellert

Nature Collection

Although there is a diversity of opinion about how to view the relationship between humans and wildlife, recent political pressures from the current administration make it mandatory that these diverse groups coalesce to use their combined leverage to halt the planned incursions into the remaining habitats of wildlife. It is also important to begin to see nature as a complex and interrelated whole, and to respect the integrity of that whole, rather than simply select individual species for affection and protection.

Bureaucracy And Wildlife: A Historical Overview, Edward E. Langenau Jan 1982

Bureaucracy And Wildlife: A Historical Overview, Edward E. Langenau

Laws and Legislation Collection

This paper provides a framework for understanding the Government's position on many wildlife topics, including humane ethics. The historical role of Government in wildlife conservation is traced in relation to pertinent theories of bureaucracy. It is shown that Government involvement in wildlife conservation increased through successive stages of change because of interest group activity.

These periods of increased Government involvement in wildlife matters are shown to have followed periods of resource exploitation. Recurrent cycles of exploitation, accompanied by economic prosperity, have then been followed by attitudes favorable to conservation and political activism. This, in turn, has produced periods of backlash …

Heg82-158 Weatherizing Your Home--Weatherstripping, Kathleen Parrott Jan 1982

Heg82-158 Weatherizing Your Home--Weatherstripping, Kathleen Parrott

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This guide discusses the practice of weatherizing your home through weatherstripping. Selection of materials, types of weatherstripping and buying and installing these products are discussed. Insulation is not the whole story for energy conservation! Even if your home is well-insulated, energy may be wasted through air infiltration. Air can leak around doors and windows, foundations, chimneys, exterior plumbing, etc. In the winter, air heated by your furnace is lost to the outside; in summer, hot outdoor air puts an extra load on your air conditioner. If your home is typical, one-half to three-quarters of your fuel bill is the result …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses caulking the home to reduce air infiltration and increase energy efficiency. Where to caulk, types of caulking materials, and techniques for caulking are presented. Is your home an energy waster? Even in a well-insulated home, energy can be wasted through air infiltration. One-third to one- half of a typical fuel bill is the result of air infiltration. Air leaks around doors and windows, foundations, chimneys, exterior plumbing, or other parts of the structure. In the winter, air heated by your furnace is lost to the outside; in summer, hot outdoor air puts an extra load on your …
