La Producción De Las Fresas Utilizando El Túnel Alto, Daniel Rowley, Brent Black, Dan Drost

All Current Publications

Phase-Linking And The Perceived Motion During Off-Vertical Axis Rotation, Jan Holly, Scott Wood, Gin Mccollum Jan 2010

Phase-Linking And The Perceived Motion During Off-Vertical Axis Rotation, Jan Holly, Scott Wood, Gin Mccollum

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Human off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) in the dark typically produces perceived motion about a cone, the amplitude of which changes as a function of frequency. This perception is commonly attributed to the fact that both the OVAR and the conical motion have a gravity vector that rotates about the subject. Little-known, however, is that this rotating-gravity explanation for perceived conical motion is inconsistent with basic observations about self-motion perception: (a) that the perceived vertical moves toward alignment with the gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA) and (b) that perceived translation arises from perceived linear acceleration, as derived from the portion of the GIA …

Arthropod Biodiversity In Response To The Restoration Of Former Pine Plantations, John Curtis Burkhalter Jan 2010

Arthropod Biodiversity In Response To The Restoration Of Former Pine Plantations, John Curtis Burkhalter

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of ecological restoration is to return degraded or altered ecosystems to their pre-disturbed state with respect to ecosystem structure, function, and composition. In the current study the research objective was to reestablish high levels of biodiversity on two restored pine plantations as well as restore a native pine flatwoods ecosystem. Managed, even-aged pine flatwoods are now the most extensive ecosystem in North Florida, comprising approximately 70% of the forested landscape. Slash pine trees were thinned in the experimental plots to restore the natural slash pine density of native ecosystems. In addition to the thinning treatments, experimental plots have …

Seeking Generalities In Salt Stress Effects On Herbivores: A Multi-Species Approach, Christy Marie Foust Jan 2010

Seeking Generalities In Salt Stress Effects On Herbivores: A Multi-Species Approach, Christy Marie Foust

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Stress has been identified as one of the primary factors influencing the structure of food webs, but few conclusions about the effects of stress on community dynamics have emerged. This study examined generalities that exist between salt stress and insect herbivore responses. Ambient salinity was artificially increased by adding 1.3 kg/m2 of salt to six different plant species: Avicennia germinans, Baccharis halimifolia, Batis maritima, Borrichia frutescens, Iva frutescens, and Spartina alterniflora. By performing a multiple species examination, stress responses were examined to determine if consistencies within and between plant type, ambient salinity conditions, and host plant species (among other criteria) …

Use Of Near-Infrared Light To Reduce Symptoms Associated With Restless Legs Syndrome In A Woman: A Case Report, Ulrike H. Mitchell Jan 2010

Use Of Near-Infrared Light To Reduce Symptoms Associated With Restless Legs Syndrome In A Woman: A Case Report, Ulrike H. Mitchell

Faculty Publications

Introduction: We describe a potential new treatment option for patients suffering from restless legs syndrome. Contemporary treatment for restless legs syndrome consists mostly of dopaminergic drugs that leave some patients feeling nauseated and dizzy. A non-invasive, drug-free option would open new doors for patients suffering from restless legs syndrome. Case presentation: A 69-year-old Caucasian woman met International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group criteria for the diagnosis of restless legs syndrome. She had been afflicted with restless legs syndrome for over 30 years and tried many of the available pharmaceutical remedies without success. For this study she received 30-minute treatment sessions …

Differences In The Mechanism Of Collagen Lattice Contraction By Myofibroblasts And Smooth Muscle Cells, J. C. Dallon, H P. Ehrlich Jan 2010

Differences In The Mechanism Of Collagen Lattice Contraction By Myofibroblasts And Smooth Muscle Cells, J. C. Dallon, H P. Ehrlich

Faculty Publications

Both rat derived vascular smooth muscle cells (SMC) and human myofibroblasts contain $\alpha$ smooth muscle actin (SMA), but they utilize different mechanisms to contract populated collagen lattices (PCLs). The difference is in how the cells generate the force that contracts the lattices. Human dermal fibroblasts transform into myofibroblasts, expressing $\alpha$-SMA within stress fibers, when cultured in lattices that remain attached to the surface of a tissue culture dish. When attached lattices are populated with rat derived vascular SMC, the cells retain their vascular SMC phenotype. Comparing the contraction of attached PCLs when they are released from the culture dish on …

Bilateral Abscesses Of The Maxillary Carnassial Teeth In A Female Pekinese, Abutorab Tabatabaei Naeini, Alireza Raayat Jahromi, Samira Mehrshad

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Tooth infections are typically seen in older dogs as a result of poor oral hygiene (periodontal disease) or traumatic tooth fractures (endodontic and periapical disease). An 8-year-old female Pekinese was presented due to bilateral draining tracts located just under its eyes, and a history of healing and recurrence of the lesions after about 3 weeks of systemic antibiotic therapy. Dental radiography revealed bilateral carnassial tooth root abscesses. Both teeth were extracted under general anesthesia. With proper postoperative care the abscesses healed with no further complications.
