A Kinematic And Kinetic Case Study Of A Netball Shoulder Pass, Sharon A. Hetherington*, Sibella G. King*, Denis Visentin‡, Marie-Louise Bird‡ Oct 2009

A Kinematic And Kinetic Case Study Of A Netball Shoulder Pass, Sharon A. Hetherington*, Sibella G. King*, Denis Visentin‡, Marie-Louise Bird‡

International Journal of Exercise Science

The majority of studies analysing netball skills using force platforms have focused on reducing the risk of injury from compression and torsion forces on the knee and ankle joints during landing and pivoting. In this preliminary case study our aim was to investigate the efficacy of a combination of tools to describe the kinematic and kinetic mechanisms underlying the netball shoulder pass. The segmental movements of the netball shoulder pass were analysed from video and force platform data in order to develop a suitable methodology for use in a larger study. Peak vertical ground reaction force of 850 N was …

Psychosocial Correlates Of Physical Activity In Children And Adolescents In A Rural Community Setting, Kelly Crimi†, Larry D. Hensley‡, Kevin J. Finn‡ Oct 2009

Psychosocial Correlates Of Physical Activity In Children And Adolescents In A Rural Community Setting, Kelly Crimi†, Larry D. Hensley‡, Kevin J. Finn‡

International Journal of Exercise Science

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships between selected psychosocial factors and the physical activity behaviors of children (grade 4-8) and adolescents (grades 9-12) in a rural community setting. The Children’s Physical Activity Scale (CPAC)was used to measure the psychosocial factors of physical activity, The Physical Activity Questionnaire-Children (PAQ-C), and Physical Activity Questionnaire-Adolescents (PAQ-A) were used to measure the physical activity behaviors of the 167 participants. Results indicated that male and female physical activity behaviors were not significantly different. However, physical activity declined with age [F(8,147) = 5.44, p < 0.05, ES = 0.23]. All psychosocial factors were significantly correlated with physical activity in youth with the single highest correlation for males being “liking of exercise” (r = .61) and the highest correlation for females was “liking of games and sports”(r = .44). Stepwise regression analyses identified three subscales (liking of games and sport, liking of exercise, and parental support) in a significant prediction model of physical activity in both genders. The results indicate that children's physical activity is associated with a variety of psychosocial variables that represent import predisposing and reinforcing factors.

A Phylogenetic Study Of The Old World Asclepiadinae (Apocynaceae) Based On Chloroplast And Nuclear Dna Sequence Data, David Chuba Oct 2009

A Phylogenetic Study Of The Old World Asclepiadinae (Apocynaceae) Based On Chloroplast And Nuclear Dna Sequence Data, David Chuba

Dissertations and Theses

Relationships within the African Asclepias generic complex (Asclepiadinae, Apocynaceae) have for a long time been only a matter of intuitive speculation and generic delimitations have been diverse and rather contentious. Generic delimitation in this group has been based on morphological characters that are usually not exclusive to any particular clade or genus. The difficulty of identifying taxonomically useful morphological characters for inferring generic delimitations has led to differences in the emphasized characters by different taxonomists. This study is aimed at understanding phylogenetic relationships of species within the African Asclepias complex based upon the nuclear PgiC and three chloroplast DNA regions, …

The Leishmania Donovani Lipophosphoglycan Excludes The Vesicular Proton-Atpase From Phagosomes By Impairing The Recruitment Of Synaptotagmin V, Adrien F. Vinet, Mitsunori Fukuda, Salvatore J. Turco, Albert Descoteaux Oct 2009

The Leishmania Donovani Lipophosphoglycan Excludes The Vesicular Proton-Atpase From Phagosomes By Impairing The Recruitment Of Synaptotagmin V, Adrien F. Vinet, Mitsunori Fukuda, Salvatore J. Turco, Albert Descoteaux

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

We recently showed that the exocytosis regulator Synaptotagmin (Syt) V is recruited to the nascent phagosome and remains associated throughout the maturation process. In this study, we investigated the possibility that Syt V plays a role in regulating interactions between the phagosome and the endocytic organelles. Silencing of Syt V by RNA interference revealed that Syt V contributes to phagolysosome biogenesis by regulating the acquisition of cathepsin D and the vesicular proton-ATPase. In contrast, recruitment of cathepsin B, the early endosomal marker EEA1 and the lysosomal marker LAMP1 to phagosomes was normal in the absence of Syt V. As Leishmania …

Provenir Ontology: Towards A Framework For Escience Provenance Management, Satya S. Sahoo, Amit P. Sheth Oct 2009

Provenir Ontology: Towards A Framework For Escience Provenance Management, Satya S. Sahoo, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Provenance metadata describes the 'lineage' or history of an entity and necessary information to verify the quality of data, validate experiment protocols, and associate trust value with scientific results. eScience projects generate data and the associated provenance metadata in a distributed environment (such as myGrid) and on a very large scale that often precludes manual analysis. Given this scenario, provenance information should be, (a) interoperable across projects, research groups, and application domains, and (b) support analysis over large datasets using reasoning to discover implicit information. In this paper, we introduce an ontology-driven framework for eScience provenance management underpinned by an …

Measures Of Heart And Ventilatory Rates In Freely Moving Crayfish, Sonya M. Bierbower, Robin L. Cooper Oct 2009

Measures Of Heart And Ventilatory Rates In Freely Moving Crayfish, Sonya M. Bierbower, Robin L. Cooper

Biology Faculty Publications

The fear, flight or fight response serves as the fundamental physiological basis for examining an organism's awareness of its environment under an impending predator attack. Although it is not known whether invertebrates posses an autonomic nervous system identical to that of vertebrates, evidence shows invertebrates have a sympathetic-like response to regulate the internal environment and ready the organism to act behaviorally to a given stimuli. Furthermore, this physiological response can be feasibly measured and it acts as a biological index for the animal's internal state. Measurements of the physiological response can be directly related to internal and external stressors through …

Heritable Factors Play A Major Role In Determining Host Responses To Wuchereria Bancrofti Infection In An Isolated South Pacific Island Population, Karen T. Cuenco, Eric A. Ottesen, Steven A. Williams, Thomas B. Nutman, Cathy Steel Oct 2009

Heritable Factors Play A Major Role In Determining Host Responses To Wuchereria Bancrofti Infection In An Isolated South Pacific Island Population, Karen T. Cuenco, Eric A. Ottesen, Steven A. Williams, Thomas B. Nutman, Cathy Steel

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background. It is increasingly recognized that host genetic factors may play an important role in determining the outcome of filarial infections. To test this hypothesis in bancroftian lymphatic filariasis, pedigree data were collected twice during an 18-year period from an isolated Polynesian population living on a Pacific island where lymphatic filariasis is endemic. Methods. Using variance-component analysis, we examined the contribution of shared genetic and environmental effects on host clinical and immune responses to filarial infection, along with potential confounding determinants. Results. Sex was found to have a negligible influence on heritability estimates, but shared-household effects accounted for up to …

BACKGROUND: Termite lignocellulose digestion is achieved through a collaboration of host plus prokaryotic and eukaryotic symbionts. In the present work, we took a combined host and symbiont metatranscriptomic approach for investigating the digestive contributions of host and symbiont in the lower termite Reticulitermes flavipes. Our approach consisted of parallel high-throughput sequencing from (i) a host gut cDNA library and (ii) a hindgut symbiont cDNA library. Subsequently, we undertook functional analyses of newly identified phenoloxidases with potential importance as pretreatment enzymes in industrial lignocellulose processing.

RESULTS: Over 10,000 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were sequenced from the 2 libraries that aligned into …

The Brain In Its Body: Motor Control And Sensing In A Biomechanical Context, Hillel J. Chiel Oct 2009

The Brain In Its Body: Motor Control And Sensing In A Biomechanical Context, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

Although it is widely recognized that adaptive behavior emerges from the ongoing interactions among the nervous system, the body, and the environment, it has only become possible in recent years to experimentally study and to simulate these interacting systems. We briefly review work on molluscan feeding, maintenance of postural control in cats and humans, simulations of locomotion in lamprey, insect, cat and salamander, and active vibrissal sensing in rats to illustrate the insights that can be derived from studies of neural control and sensing within a biomechanical context. These studies illustrate that control may be shared between the nervous system …

An Intertidal Sea Star Adjusts Thermal Inertia To Avoid Extreme Body Temperatures, Sylvain Pincebourde, Eric Sanford, Brian Helmuth Oct 2009

An Intertidal Sea Star Adjusts Thermal Inertia To Avoid Extreme Body Temperatures, Sylvain Pincebourde, Eric Sanford, Brian Helmuth

Faculty Publications

The body temperature of ectotherms is influenced by the interaction of abiotic conditions, morphology, and behavior. Although organisms living in different thermal habitats may exhibit morphological plasticity or move from unfavorable locations, there are few examples of animals adjusting their thermal properties in response to short-term changes in local conditions. Here, we show that the intertidal sea star Pisaster ochraceus modulates its thermal inertia in response to prior thermal exposure. After exposure to high body temperature at low tide, sea stars increase the amount of colder than-air fluid in their coelomic cavity when submerged during high tide, resulting in a …

Biomarker Changes Associated With Tuberculin Skin Test (Tst) Conversion: A Two-Year Longitudinal Follow-Up Study In Exposed Household Contacts, Rabia Hussain, Najeeha Talat, Firdaus Shahid, Ghaffar Dawood Oct 2009

Biomarker Changes Associated With Tuberculin Skin Test (Tst) Conversion: A Two-Year Longitudinal Follow-Up Study In Exposed Household Contacts, Rabia Hussain, Najeeha Talat, Firdaus Shahid, Ghaffar Dawood

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background:A high prevalence (50-80%) of Tuberculin Skin Test Positivity (TST+ >or=10 mm indurations) has been reported in TB endemic countries. This pool forms a huge reservoir for new incident TB cases. However, immune biomarkers associated with TST conversion are largely unknown. The objective of this study was to identify immune biomarkers associated with TST conversion after acute Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)
Methodology/Principal Findings:A 24 month longitudinal study was carried out in a recently MTB exposed cohort of household contacts (HC = 93, 75% TST+). Control group consisted of unexposed community controls (EC = 59, 46%TST+). Cytokine secretion was assessed …

Inhibition Of Rna Recruitment And Replication Of An Rna Virus By Acridine Derivatives With Known Anti-Prion Activities, Zsuzsanna Sasvari, Stéphane Bach, Marc Blondel, Peter D. Nagy

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Small molecule inhibitors of RNA virus replication are potent antiviral drugs and useful to dissect selected steps in the replication process. To identify antiviral compounds against Tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV), a model positive stranded RNA virus, we tested acridine derivatives, such as chlorpromazine (CPZ) and quinacrine (QC), which are active against prion-based diseases.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here, we report that CPZ and QC compounds inhibited TBSV RNA accumulation in plants and in protoplasts. In vitro assays revealed that the inhibitory effects of these compounds were manifested at different steps of TBSV replication. QC was shown to have an effect …

Insertion Sequence Content Reflects Genome Plasticity In Strains Of The Root Nodule Actinobacterium Frankia, Derek M. Bickhart, Johann P. Gogarten, Pascal Lapierre, Louis S. Tisa, Philippe Normand, David R. Benson

Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences

Background: Genome analysis of three Frankia sp. strains has revealed a high number of transposable elements in two of the strains. Twelve out of the 20 major families of bacterial Insertion Sequence (IS) elements are represented in the 148 annotated transposases of Frankia strain HFPCcI3 (CcI3) comprising 3% of its total coding sequences (CDS). EAN1pec (EAN) has 183 transposase ORFs from 13 IS families comprising 2.2% of its CDS. Strain ACN14a (ACN) differs significantly from the other strains with only 33 transposase ORFs (0.5% of the total CDS) from 9 IS families. Results: Insertion sequences in the Frankia genomes were …
