Physiological And Nutritional Responses Of Chickpea (Cicer Arietinum L) To Salinity, Abdelmajid Krouma
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The aim of this study was to evaluate growth, nodulation, nitrogen fixation, and ionic repartition in 2 chickpea varieties, namely Chetoui and Amdoun, which are grown under salt stress. Inoculated seedlings were grown in a nutrient solution that lacked NaCl (control) or supplemented with 25 or 50 mM NaCl. Whole plant and nodule growth, nitrogen fixation and sodium, and chloride and potassium partitioning were subsequently evaluated. In comparison to Chetoui, Amdoun maintained a high level of whole plant and nodule growth and had a greater nitrogen fixation activity. Nitrogenase activity measurements demonstrated that nodule senescence was more precocious in Chetoui …

Screening Of Wild Emmer Wheat Accessions (Triticum Turgidum Subsp. Dicoccoides) For Mycorrhizal Dependency, Cemal Yücel, Hakan Özkan, İbrahi̇m Ortaş, Tacetti̇n Yağbasanlar
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Mycorrhizal dependency was studied in 23 wild emmer (Triticum turgidum subsp. dicoccoides) accessions originating from ecologically and geographically different locations in the Fertile Crescent covering Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria. Wild emmer accessions were grown with mycorrhizae (Glomus mosseae) and non-mycorrhizae under greenhouse conditions, and harvested according to the Zadoks scale at growth stage 33. Root, shoot and total dry weight, growth response, root infection, and mycorrhizal dependency were calculated. It was determined that mycorrhizal inoculation increased 4.1-, 3.9-, and 3.9-fold for root, shoot, and total dry weight, respectively, compared to the control. It was found that wild emmer …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Wheat yield of 37 wheat varieties along with a susceptible check, Morocco, was studied under yellow rust pressure across 3 locations of North West Frontier Province (NWFP), Pakistan during 2007. Considerable high disease pressure, as revealed by yellow rust severity, was observed at all locations with the maximum (100%) at Cereal Crop Research Institute (CCRI), Nowshera. Disease severity ranged from 0% to 70% for the tested varieties while reached 100% for Morocco with S type of host response. We report the presence of sufficient variability across locations for both yield potential and yellow rust severity. Locations with maximum disease pressure …

Variation In Resistance To Marine Borers In Commercial Timbers From Turkey, As Assessed By Marine Trial And Laboratory Screening, Hüseyi̇n Si̇vri̇kaya, Simon M. Cragg, Luisa M. S. Borges
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Commercial timbers from Turkey used in coastal construction and boat building were tested for their resistance to marine wood-boring invertebrates in a marine trial and in a laboratory screening test. The timbers tested were beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky), oak (Quercus petraea (Mattuschka) Liebl.), chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.), and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The marine trial was conducted over a period of 5 months at Mersin on the southern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Activity by teredinid (Mollusca, Bivalvia) borers during this period was very high, resulting in the maximum rating of 4 on the EN 275 scale for P. sylvestris …

Detection Of Some Woody Plants In Late Oligocene Forests Of İstanbul, Nurgül Karlioğlu, Ünal Akkemi̇k, Hülya Caner
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
A paleopalynological study was performed on the fossilized pollen found in the coal and clay layers of the Akçelik Coalmine, which is one of the open lignite quarries located at the northern part of İstanbul, and 15 genera belonging to 14 families were identified from the late Oligocene of İstanbul. Of these 14 families, 4 families belong to Gymnospermae, and 10 of them belong to Angiospermae. In the study, 85.8% of pollen is arboreal (AP) (woody plants), 10.4% is non-arboreal (NAP) (herbal plants), and rest of them (3.8%) could not be identified. The middle coal layer has a significant number …
