Comparison Of The Performance Of Autumn And Spring Sowing Of Chickpeas In A Temperate Region, Sai̇m Özdemi̇r, Ufuk Karadavut
Comparison Of The Performance Of Autumn And Spring Sowing Of Chickpeas In A Temperate Region, Sai̇m Özdemi̇r, Ufuk Karadavut
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The effects of autumn and spring sowing on chickpea yield were investigated by examining yield components in a 2-year (2000-2001 and 2001-2002 growing seasons) field experiment in a temperate region, in north-west Turkey. Twenty-one chickpea genotypes (2 registered varieties of winter type for the Mediterranean region and 19 breeding lines) were evaluated in 2 sowing seasons (autumn and spring). Autumn-sown crops were subjected to -2.1 °C and snow cover twice (2 and 4 days) in the first year and -7.6 °C and snow cover 3 times (8, 14 and 6 days) in the second year. All genotypes were resistant to …

Kinetics Of Nonenzymatic Browning Reaction In Citrus Juice Concentrates During Storage, Nuray Koca, Hande Selen Burdurlu, Feryal Karadeni̇z
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The kinetics of nonenzymatic browning in citrus juice concentrates (orange, lemon, grapefruit and tangerine) during 8 weeks of storage at 28, 37 and 45 ºC were investigated. Browning development was followed by measuring absorbance at 420 nm (A_{420}) and using CIE-Lab color system. Analysis of kinetic data from A_{420} values suggested a zero-order reaction for nonenzymatic browning, while changes in L* and b* parameters followed a first-order reaction. Activation energy for nonenzymatic browning determined by A_{420} values ranged from 17.60 to 35.27 kcal mol^{-1}, while those for L* and b* parameters were 6.67-28.99 kcal mol^{-1} and 15.38-34.2 kcal mol^{-1}, respectively. …
Hydrolysis Of Polysaccharides With 77% Sulfuric Acid For Quantitative Saccharification, Güneş Uçar, Mualla Balaban
Hydrolysis Of Polysaccharides With 77% Sulfuric Acid For Quantitative Saccharification, Güneş Uçar, Mualla Balaban
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Classical standard hydrolysis of polysaccharides with 72% sulfuric acid was modified in 2 manners. In order to avoid treatment in an autoclave at 120 °C under pressure, wood or pulp material was first swollen in cold 77% acid followed by hydrolysis steps in diluted acid solutions. Further, the neutralization of the hydrolyzate with dilute barium hydroxide was carried out in heated mother liquor ensuring a crystalline precipitate of barium sulfate. Digestion enables the separation of clear aliquots by decantation in large amounts for analysis by HPLC. The modified procedure allows hydrolyses of polysaccharides with low losses as indicated by correction …
Measuring The Market Power Of The Banana Import Market In Turkey, Seli̇m Adem Hatirli, Eugene Jones, Ali̇ Riza Aktaş
Measuring The Market Power Of The Banana Import Market In Turkey, Seli̇m Adem Hatirli, Eugene Jones, Ali̇ Riza Aktaş
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Banana production in Turkey represents a small fraction of that required to meet domestic consumption. Domestic consumption totaled 188,000 t in 2000, whereas production amounted to just 64,000 t, or 34% of consumption. The gap between consumption and production is made up by imports and 5 multinational firms control the flow of more than 80% of the global banana trade. Given this firm dominance in the world trade of bananas, oligopoly theory would suggest the presence of underlying structural forces that could facilitate price-enhancing market power. As such, this study develops an integrated trade and new empirical industrial organization (NEIO) …

Apple Grading Using Fuzzy Logic, İsmai̇l Kavdir, Daniel E. Guyer
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Classification is vital for the evaluation of agricultural produce. However, the high costs, subjectivity, tediousness and inconsistency associated with manual sorting have been forcing the post harvest industry to apply automation in sorting operations. Fuzzy logic (FL) was applied as a decision making support to grade apples in this study. Quality features such as the color, size and defects of apples were measured through different equipment. The same set of apples was graded by both a human expert and a FL system designed for this purpose. Grading results obtained from FL showed 89% general agreement with the results from the …

Effects Of Pesticides And Their Combinations On Human Fibroblast Cells, Yijun Deng
Effects Of Pesticides And Their Combinations On Human Fibroblast Cells, Yijun Deng
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Pesticides are widely used in Iowa due to its primarily agricultural economy. Many studies have shown that the water sources in Iowa are contaminated by multiple pesticides. Most of the information about the adverse human health effects due to such environmental contaminants comes from studies that focus on exposure to single rather than multiple pesticides. Additionally, many of the environmental regulations regarding levels of pesticide contamination refer only to single, individual pesticides. Many questions remain about the human health effects of exposure to pesticide combinations. This study attempts to understand the effects of pesticide combinations on human cells. A cell …

Angiotensin Ii Enhances Adenylyl Cyclase Signaling Via Ca2+/Calmodulin. Gq-Gs Cross-Talk Regulates Collagen Production In Cardiac Fibroblasts, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Jennifer E. Naugle, Miki Hase, Caroline Gregorian, James S. Swaney, Paul A. Insel, Laurence L. Brunton, J. Gary Meszaros
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Cardiac fibroblasts regulate formation of extracellular matrix in the heart, playing key roles in cardiac remodeling and hypertrophy. In this study, we sought to characterize cross-talk between Gq and Gs signaling pathways and its impact on modulating collagen synthesis by cardiac fibroblasts. Angiotensin II (ANG II) activates cell proliferation and collagen synthesis but also potentiates cyclic AMP (cAMP) production stimulated by β-adrenergic receptors (β-AR). The potentiation of β-AR-stimulated cAMP production by ANG II is reduced by phospholipase C inhibition and enhanced by overexpression of Gq. Ionomycin and thapsigargin increased intracellular Ca2+ levels and potentiated isoproterenol- and forskolin-stimulated cAMP production, whereas …
Thermal Time: Body Size, Food Quality And The 10c Rule, Eric Charnov, James Gillooly
Thermal Time: Body Size, Food Quality And The 10c Rule, Eric Charnov, James Gillooly
Biology Faculty & Staff Publications
Developmental rates of ectotherms (y) are often linearly related to temperature (Tc in C) within some biologically relevant range of temperatures as y = (1/S)(Tc - Tb), where Tb is the estimated temperature at zero development, and the thermal constant S is the development time multiplied by the temperature above Tb (i.e. degree days above Tb). Among similar species, it has been widely shown that S and Tb are negatively related across environments, that S is positively related to body size, and that Tb is independent of body size but increases with mean environmental temperature. Here we present a model …
Isolation And Characterisation Of Microsatellites In The Asian Arowanas, Scleropages Formosus, Janethi Sivananthan
Isolation And Characterisation Of Microsatellites In The Asian Arowanas, Scleropages Formosus, Janethi Sivananthan
Student Works (2000-2009)
The Asian Arowana (Scleropages /ormosusu) is a primitive freshwater fish form the Jurassic era. It is very hardy and can live a good half century. Its low fecundity rate (about 30 eggs per batch), coupled with habitat degradation, threaten the future survivability of this fish (Khan et al., 1996). It was once close to extinction. In this study, microsatellites were used to study the allele frequencies, heterozygosity as well as the genetic differences among varieties. To identify microsatellite loci without the expense of library screening, a new strategy has been proposed by Fisher et al. (1996). This approach, called the …
The Economic Value Of Tourism And Recreation In Forested Areas Of Western Australia, Rachel Goff
The Economic Value Of Tourism And Recreation In Forested Areas Of Western Australia, Rachel Goff
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In recent years, natural area tourism has been presented as a more profitable, labour intensive and environmentally sound industry than the traditional extractive industries which have resulted in the depletion of primary resources in many countries (Burr, 1995). However, in order for economic returns from tourism to be maintained over a long period of time, investment in resources and infrastructure that support and encourage sustainable tourism and recreation activity in natural areas is required. The key to sustainability is maintaining the capital stock of resources (Garrod & Fyall, 1998; Russell, 2001). In a society driven by economics, resources are allocated …

Embryo And Gamete Development Upon Exposure To Cca Components: Cro3, Cuo, And As2o5, Nerbana Talaat-Elsebaei Mahmoud
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Production of functional gametes and healthy embryos is essential for proliferation of all vertebrates, especially humans. Many compounds have toxic effects on developing gametes and embryos among which are chromium trioxide (CrO3), cupric oxide (CuO) and arsenic pentaoxide (As2O5) as a mixture (CCA) or individually. Controversy surrounding the safety of CCA-treated wood centers primarily on the toxicity of its components and the potential for these metals to be released from the wood.
The aim of this research is to test the hypothesis that CCA components have deleterious effects on embryo development, oocyte maturation and …

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a correlation between teaching method or cognitive development and achievement in a unit on Lewis electron dot structures. Forty-six students were taught a unit on Lewis electron dot structures using the traditional paper and pencil method. Thirty-eight students were taught the same unit using a manipulative model instead of the traditional method. Both groups of students were given pre and post-tests on Lewis electron dot structures and their gains after instruction were measured. The Group Assessment of Logical Thinking measured student's cognitive level. Students were categorized as concrete, transitional …

Knowledge of the evolutionary origin and sources of pest resistance genes will facilitate gene deployment and development of crop cultivars with durable resistance. Our objective was to determine the source of common bacterial blight (CBB) resistance in the common bean Great Northern Nebraska #1 (GN#1) and GN#1 Selection 27 (GN#1 Sel 27). Several great northern cultivars including GN#1, GN#1 Sel 27, and Montana No. 5 (the female parent of the common x tepary bean interspecific population from which GN #1 and GN # 1 Sel 27 were derived) and known susceptible checks were evaluated for CBB reaction in field and …
