Restoration And Monitoring Of The River Otter Population In Iowa, J. A. Pitt, W. R. Clark, R. D. Andrews, K. P. Schlarbaum, D. D. Hoffman, S. W. Pitt
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Northern river otters (Lontra canadensis) were widespread in North America at the time of European settlement. However, river otters were extirpated from most of Iowa in the early 1900s due to habitat degradation and unregulated harvest. In 1985, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources began an effort to restore the river otter population throughout the state, including a pilot study of survival to determine if establishment was feasible. Annual survival was estimated to be 86% during the pilot study. River otters dispersed an average of about 11 km from the point of release and exhibited habitat use typical for the …

The Influence Of Soil Water Content, Calcite Content, And Temperature On Bulk Electrical Conductivity, Eric C. Brevik, Jaehoon Lee, Thomas E. Fenton, Robert Horton
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Electrical conductivity (EC) as measured by the Geonics® EM-38 has shown promise as a soil survey tool. EC is determined by a combination of soluble salts, clay content and mineralogy, water content, and temperature. While investigating use of the EM-38 for soil survey purposes, it is important to understand the relative contribution of each of these variables on EC. A laboratory experiment was set up to determine the relative influence of water content, temperature, and calcite content on EC using time-domain reflectometry (TDR) probes. TDR was used as a proxy for the EM-38 because of the large volume of soil …
Isolation And Characterisation Of A Pax Group Iii Gene From The Freshwater Crayfish Cherax Destructor: Implications For The Evolution Of Muscle Regeneration, Robert B. White
Theses : Honours
Pax genes encode transcription factors that are highly evolutionarily conserved and are vital for animal development. Vertebrate Pax group III genes Pax3 and Pax7 are required for proper development of muscular and central nervous systems. In their roles in muscular systems, Pax3 and Pax7 specify myoblasts (muscle progenitor cells). Pax3 is predominantly involved in embryonic myogenesis and specifies embryonic myoblasts. In contrast, Pax7 specifies adult myoblasts (muscle satellite cells), and has been demonstrated to be vital for adult muscle regeneration. Recent evidence also implicates a role for Pax7 in the conversion of certain stem cells to the myogenic lineage. The …
Patterns Of Water Uptake And Rhizosphere Salinity In Casuarina Obesa Miq. During A Drying Period At Lake Toolibin, Western Australia, Patrick J. Mitchell
Patterns Of Water Uptake And Rhizosphere Salinity In Casuarina Obesa Miq. During A Drying Period At Lake Toolibin, Western Australia, Patrick J. Mitchell
Theses : Honours
Lake Toolibin is one of a few remaining freshwater lakes in the central wheatbelt of Western Australia. Since monitoring began at Lake Toolibin in the early 1970's groundwater levels have risen to within 1-2 m of the lakebed with an accompanying migration of salt. The site-specific nature of water uptake in Casuarina obesa Miq. (the dominant lakebed tree species) and rhizosphere salinity were explored spatially through analyses of soil properties (groundwater depth and salinity, particle size and components of soil water potential ψ1). Plant water sources (using δ2H signatures) and water availability (based on ψleaf …
Investigation Into The Population Dynamics And Key Life History Characteristics Of Non-Biting Midge (Diptera: Chironomidae) Which Can Be Utilised To Improve Nuisance Control At Lake Joondalup, Western Australia, Michael Roberts
Theses : Honours
Non-biting midges (Diptera: Chironomidae) become a severe nuisance to humans living close to urban wetlands when they emerge at night to form mating swarms. The phototactic nature of adult chironomids means that large quantities of chironomids congregate around artificial lighting prominent in the surrounding suburbs of urban wetlands. This nuisance problem has compelled the investigation of suitable control options which are able to reduce the numbers of midges to below nuisance levels for an extended period. Currently the options available to control chironomid populations rely on the treatment of affected wetlands with pesticide. These treatment regimes are usually only successful …
The Composition Of Cryptophytes (Geophytes) And Other Plants In The Northern Jarrah Forest Of Western Australia: An Analysis Of Logged And Old Growth Forest, Conrad C. Slee
Theses : Honours
Forests are decreasing globally and there are pressing requirements for ecologically sustainable forest management to be implemented at all scales. There has been some criticism of the public managers for forests and the processes used to select reserve systems and silvicultural methods used. Limited research has been conducted on the effects of logging on the plants of the northern Jarrah forest of south western Australia, While fire is a major disturbance event, disturbance during logging operations may remove non-commercial trees, understorey shrubs and change soil conditions. Some plants that regenerate from below ground storage organs such as Cryptophytes (Geophytes) may …
A Comparison Of The Epithelium To Mesenchyme Transformation Process In Cultured Embryonic Chick Neural Crest Cells And Human Metastatic Cervical Cancer Cells, Molly Decker
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
Embryonic neural crest cells (NCCs) and metastasizing cancer cells both undergo an epithelium to mesenchyme transformation (EMT) during which they disengage from neighboring cells and basement membrane and actively migrate to new locations. NCCs, small groups of cells that emerge from the neural tube, move directionally through adjacent tissues to reach specific destinations where they differentiate into a diverse array of specific cells and tissues. Caski cells are an established line of metastatic cervical cancer cells that contain HPV. We compared NCCs to Caski cells during EMT with respect to the expression of key proteins related to cell migration-integrin, paxillin, …

Evidence For The Involvement Of A Tsetse Midgut Lectin-Trypsin Complex In Differentiation Of Bloodstream-Form Trypanosomes, L. U. Abubakar, G. Zimba, C. Wells, F. Mulaa, E. O. Osir
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
We have previously described a bloodmeal-induced molecule (lectin-trypsin complex) from the midgut of the tsetse fly, Glossina longipennis, with both lectin and trypsin activities (Osir et al., 1995). In this paper, we report on the isolation of a similar molecule from the midguts of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes and provide direct evidence for its involvement in the development of African trypanosomes. The molecule (native Mr ∼65,700) has two non-covalently linked subunits, Mr ∼28,800 and Mr ∼35,700. The native molecule was found to be capable of inducing differentiation of bloodstream-form trypanosomes into procyclic (midgut forms) in vitro. In the assays, specific antibodies …

Geographic Differences In Host Acceptance And Suitability Of Two Cotesia Sesamiae Populations In Zimbabwe, P. Chinwada, W. A. Overholt, C. O. Omwega, J. M. Mueke
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Three lepidopteran stemborers, Busseola fusca Fuller (Noctuidae), Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Noctuidae), and Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Crambidae), were evaluated for their acceptability for oviposition and suitability for development by two populations of the larval endoparasitoid Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) occurring in the highveld (>1200m) and lowveld (<600 m) regions of Zimbabwe. Mating studies were also conducted to determine reproductive compatibility between the populations. Both C. sesamiae populations preferred the noctuids to C. partellus for oviposition. possibly reflecting differences in evolutionary history. Although B. fusca was partially suitable for development of lowveld C. sesamiae, all three hosts were suitable for development of the highveld population. Crosses between highveld and lowveld C. sesamiae were compatible, and were generally not different from the intra-population crosses in developmental time, % adult emergence and sex ratio. However, broods were much larger when highveld males were used in the mating combinations. We conclude that although there is host overlap and probably a considerable degree of outbreeding between the two C. sesamiae populations, there are still significant genetic differences between them. Within Zimbabwe, it is unlikely that the deliberate introduction of either population outside its region of occurrence will give meaningful stemborer control. © 2003 Elsevier Science (USA). All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Five novel limonoids, 1-5, were isolated from the root bark of Turraea wakefieldii and were characterized as tecleaninoid derivatives. This is the first report of the natural occurrence of tecleanin-type limonoids with a five-membered-ring A-seco structure for which we propose the name neotecleanins. The relative stereochemical structures of compounds 1-5 were established on the basis of NMR spectroscopy. The absolute stereochemical structure of 5 was confirmed by X-ray diffraction methods. In mosquito larvicidal assays, compounds 1, 2 and 4 showed dose-dependent larvicidal activity against larvae of Anopheles gambiae s.s. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this study, the matrix (M) gene of the RBOK vaccine strain of rinderpest (RPV) was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloned into TOPO^R XL cloning vector. For this purpose, Vero cells were infected with the RBOK vaccine strain of RPV and total RNA was obtained from the infected cells. cDNA of the matrix gene was obtained by reverse transcription from the total RNA. Amplification of the cDNA with PCR was achieved by using the M gene specific primer and PCR products of the M gene were directly ligated into the TOPO^R XL cloning vector and this recombinant …

In 2000-2001, the frequency of metritis cases due to Klebsiella pneumoniae was investigated in Thoroughbred breeding mares in the Marmara region of Turkey, where most racehorses are reared. In addition, Thoroughbred stallions from the breeding centre in the İzmit district were examined for the presence of K. pneumoniae. Biotypes and capsule types of the isolates were detected, and their antibiotic susceptibilities were determined. Intrauterine swabs taken from 56 mares with metritis, and semen samples and swabs of urethral fossa from 27 stallions were investigated. K. pneumoniae was isolated from 13 (23.2%) mares and 2 (7.4%) stallions. Biotyping of the isolates …
