An Examination Of Relationships Between Vegetation And Rainfall Using Maximum Value Composite Avhrr-Ndvi Data, Murat Karabulut

Turkish Journal of Botany

Global vegetation monitoring with remotely sensed data has the potential of improving our knowledge about the characteristics and spatial distribution of the earth's land cover. The purpose of this study was to assess vegetation response to different rainfall regimes using bi-weekly MVC (Maximum Value Composite) AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) data. The results from this research showed that the NDVI (Normalised Difference Vegetation Index) has the potential for evaluating vegetation state, which is related to seasonal variations in climatic conditions. Extreme climatic events such as droughts and abundant moisture conditions can have a strong impact on vegetation development and …

The purpose of this data set was to compile general life history characteristics for a variety of mammalian species in order to perform comparative life history analyses among different taxa and different body size groups. Data were collected from the literature, and data sources are documented for each species within the data file. Since life history characteristics will show minor variation with environmental conditions (resource availability, climate, competitive environment, and predation pressure) a general life history for each species was sought to average over minor differences in local populations. To create a general life history for each species, life history …

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to estimate both cross-sectional sibling recurrence risk ratio (lambdas) and lifetime lambdas for the metabolic syndrome and its individual components over time among sibships in the prospectively followed-up cohorts provided by the Genetic Analysis Workshop 13. Five measures included in the operational criteria of the metabolic syndrome by the Adult Treatment Panel III were examined. A method for estimating sibling recurrence risk with correction for complete ascertainment was used to estimate the numerator, and the prevalence in the whole cohort was used as the denominator of lambdas. Considerable variability in the lambdas was found …

The Probabilistic Economic Injury Level: Incorporating Uncertainty Into Pest Management Decision-Making, Robert K. D. Peterson, Thomas E. Hunt Jan 2003

The Probabilistic Economic Injury Level: Incorporating Uncertainty Into Pest Management Decision-Making, Robert K. D. Peterson, Thomas E. Hunt

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Despite the recognition that the economic injury level (EIL) is determined by dynamic biological and economic parameters, which can be highly variable and uncertain, there has been little effort to quantify uncertainty and to use estimates of uncertainty in the determination of EILs. In this paper, we define the probabilistic EIL (PEIL) and develop PEILs for two insect pest scenarios: alfalfa weevil larvae, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal), on early bud-stage alfalfa, and bean leaf beetle adults, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster), on V1-stage soybean. The PEIL is an EIL that reflects its probability of occurrence. The probability of occurrence is determined by incorporating …

Assessment Of Grain Yield Losses In Pearl Millet Due To The Millet Stemborer, Coniesta Ignefusalis (Hampson), Aissetou Drame-Yaye, Ousmane Youm, Jonathan N. Ayertey

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Studies were conducted at the ICRISAT Sahelian Centre, Niger, to assess damage and yield loss by the millet stemborer, Coniesta ignefusalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) on Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Brown. Although 78% of stems were infested, late attack by the millet stemborer on millet plants resulted in bored stems yielding more than unbored ones. Artificial infestations with 5 and 10 larvae per plant at 2 weeks after plant emergence (WAE) resulted in 50 to 70% plants with deadhearts and 24 to 100% avoidable yield loss. At 4 weeks after plant emergence, infestations with 5 larvae and 10 larvae per plant resulted …

A Response Surface Analysis Of Commercial Corn Starch Annealing, Serap Ozcan, David S. Jackson Jan 2003

A Response Surface Analysis Of Commercial Corn Starch Annealing, Serap Ozcan, David S. Jackson

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Native starch is composed of granules that are organized, durable, and morphologically identifiable microscopic structures of amylose and amylopectin molecules (Virtanen and Autio 1993; Snyder 1984). Sahai and Jackson (1994) reported that native starch granules from a single starch source were not homogeneous in character and had different functional properties. Because of their heterogeneity, it should not be expected that starch granules behave uniformly when heated in water (Sahai and Jackson 1996). The extent of heat treatment, starch hydration. and the inherent physical and chemical properties of native starch determine the structure and functionality of starch in a food system. …

THE WOLF IS TRULY a special animal. As the most widely distributed of all land mammals, the wolf, formally the gray wolf (Canis lupus), is also one of the most adaptable. It inhabits all the vegetation types of the Northern Hemisphere and preys on all the large mammals living there. It also feeds on all the other animals in its environment, scavenges, and can even eat fruits and berries. Wolves frequent forests and prairies, tundra, barren ground, mountains, deserts, and swamps. Some wolves even visit large cities, and, of course, the wolf's domesticated version, the dog, thrives in …

Wolf Population Dynamics, Todd K. Fuller, L. David Mech, Jean Fitts Cochrane

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

A LARGE, DARK WOLF poked his nose out of the pines in Yellowstone National Park as he thrust a broad foot deep into the snow and plowed ahead. Soon a second animal appeared, then another, and a fourth. A few minutes later, a pack of thirteen lanky wolves had filed out of the pines and onto the open hillside.

Wolf packs are the main social units of a wolf population. As numbers of wolves in packs change, so too, then, does the wolf population (Rausch 1967). Trying to understand the factors and mechanisms that affect these changes is what the …
