Evaluation Of The Periventricular Lesions Associated With Congenital Hydrocephalus In Puppies, Osman Kutsal, Rifki Haziroğlu, Tolga Güvenç, Recai̇ Tunca
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Hydrocephalus associated lesions such as diverticula, clefts and tears observed in periventricular white matter were studied pathologically in three puppies with necropsy between 1993 and 1994. Enlargement of the cranial vault was present in the puppies. The animals were blind, and their morphological alterations were similar. Marked hydrocephalus caused by mesencephalic canal malformations and obstruction was detected in all cases. Compression atrophy was seen in the nucleus caudatus, hippocampus, putamen and cerebellum in all animals. Cerebral sulci malformations were also detected in the cranial parts of the brain. Ependymal lesions consisting of attenuation, regeneration, calcification and desquamation were also observed. …

Identification Of Chicken Originated Campylobacter Coli And Campylobacter Jejuni By Polymerase Chain Reaction (Pcr), Hasan Basri̇ Ertaş, Burhan Çeti̇nkaya, Adi̇le Muz, Hasan Öngör
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The purpose of this study was to isolate Campylobacter species from the intestines and livers of chicken and to identify Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni by both conventional methods and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Four specific primers derived from the ceuE gene present in the genomes of C. coli and C. jejuni were used for PCR identification. In the examination of 150 intestine and liver samples by culture and PCR, 25 (16.6%) and 32 (21.3%) were identified as C. coli and C. jejuni, respectively. It was concluded that the PCR assay used in this study may successfully be applied for …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The effects of protein sources added to the medium for maturation of bitch oocytes were investigated. Ovaries from spayed bitches were transported to the laboratory in PBS at 38 ºC within an hour. Recovered oocytes were divided into three groups and left for 72 h maturation at 38.5 ºC under an atmosphere of 5% CO_2 and high humidity. Group 1 (Control): TCM 199 medium, Group 2 (BSA): TCM 199 medium supplemented with 0.3% BSA, Group 3 (FCS): TCM 199 medium supplemented with 5% FCS. At the end of the maturation period, all oocytes were denuded from cumulus cells by pipetting …

The liver damage and obstructions of the biliary tract were evaluated ultrasonographically in experimentally bile duct ligated dogs. Seven healthy dogs of different breeds were used. The common bile duct was double ligated at the duodenal region after clinical and ultrasonographic examinations. After that, clinical examinations, biochemical analyses and examinations of the liver, gallbladder and biliary tract were done ultrasonographically over 6 weeks. All dogs were necropsied and macroscopic and histologic alterations were determined at the end of the study. It was determined that the levels of serum ALT, ALP, GGT and T. Bilirubin were (p < 0.001-0.05) statistically significantly increased after the operation in all dogs. As a result of ultrasonographic examinations, it was determined that the bile ducts and gallbladder were distended, the neck of the gallbladder was larger and more tortuous than normal, hypoechoic sludge was prominent in the gallbladder, and perivascular, multifocal hyperechoic areas appeared in the liver parenchyma toward the end of the study. These alterations were confirmed macroscopically and microscopically at the end of the autopsy in all dogs. We consider that as well as blood serum parameters, ultrasonographic examinations are useful in the early diagnosis of biliary diseases and in differentiating them from hepatic diseases.

Organophosphate Toxicosis In Chickens: A Case Report, Robert Hubbard, Judith England, E. Dustan Clark
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Two cases of organophosphate toxicity were diagnosed at the University of Arkansas Poultry Science Department poultry research farm in the Spring of 2002. In both cases the birds were being treated with the organophosphate RaVap® for Northern Fowl Mites (Ornithonyssus sylvarium) infestations. A total of 61 birds died and 13 were treated successfully with atropine sulphate.
The Influence Of Storing High Moisture-Content Rough Rice On Milling Quality, Julita M. Manski, Terry Siebenmorgen
The Influence Of Storing High Moisture-Content Rough Rice On Milling Quality, Julita M. Manski, Terry Siebenmorgen
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
The objective of this research was to determine the influence on drying characteristics of storing high-moisture content (MC) rough rice under various conditions and durations before drying. Two cultivars of rice, 'Bengal', a medium-grain cultivar, and 'Cypress', a long-grain cultivar, were used. The MC of 'Bengal' was 24.8%1 and that of 'Cypress' was 20.4% at harvest. Immediately after harvest, drying runs were performed with samples of both cultivars under two drying air conditions: one at 51.7°C (125°F) and 25% relative humidity (RH), and the other at 60°C (140°F) and 17% RH. Storage treatments using the high MC rice were also …

The recent development of geographic information systems (GIS) provides new avenues for analysing spatial patterns in insect populations. Field survey data, along with GIS and statistical models were used to predict the distribution of Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) and Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in Ethiopia. The results obtained suggested that the distributions of Ch. parlellus and Co. flavipes were affected by rainfall and temperature. The predicted distributions of Ch. parlellus and Co. flavipes were similar. Validation of predicted values is discussed. © 2002 ICIPE.

The demographic statistics of the ladybird Exochomus flaviventris Mader (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were investigated under laboratory conditions on the cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae), reared on four host plants with different levels of antibiotic resistance to the mealybug: two cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz, Euphorbiaceae) varieties, Incoza and Zanaga, Faux-Caoutchouc (FC) (hybrid of M. esculenta x M. glaziovii Muel. Arg.) and water weed (Talinum triangulare Jack, Portulacacae). Preimaginal mortality, mean oviposition time and total fecundity of female ladybirds were strongly affected by the host plant even though there was no linkage with antibiotic resistance. The net reproduction rates R o …

Evidence Of Adaptation Of Diamondback Moth, Plutella Xylostella (L.), To Pea, Pisum Sativum L., Bernhard Löhr, Ruth Gathu
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
A strain of diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), adapted to peas was detected in 1999 in the export vegetable growing area south of Lake Naivasha in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. The pea strain (DBM-P) was compared in laboratory studies to the normal crucifer strain (DBM-C). Whereas DBM-P performed comparably well on kales and peas, the cabbage strain (DBM-C) suffered heavy mortality on peas. Out of the 250 DBM-C first instars, only six reached adult stage on pea. In addition, larval development was prolonged by five days on peas as compared to kale, and larval growth …

Description Of The First-Instar Larva Of Geocharidius (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Trechitae) With A Discussion Of The Phylogeny Of The Subtribe Anillina, Vasily V. Grebennikov
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
This paper describes the first-instar larva of Geocharidius Jeannel, a species from Mexico, which is the second record of an Anillina (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Trechitae) larva; previously described was a species of the European genus Typhlocharis. Larvae of these two genera share ten synapomorphic characters, which support the monophyletic origin of Anillina. Sister-group relationships of Anillina with Tachyina + Xystosomina are proposed on the basis of three shared larval synapomorphies: seta LA5 of ligula absent; coronal suture in first-instar larvae very short or absent; second- third-instar larvae have none or one secondary seta on lateral sides of stipes and labium and …
