Xml-Based Modeling And Simulation: Web Service Technologies And Their Synergy With Simulation, Senthilanand Chandrasekaran, Gregory S. Silver, John A. Miller, Jorge Cardoso, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The World Wide Web has had an huge influence on the computing field in general as well as simulation in particular (e.g., Web-based simulation). A new wave of development based upon XML has started. Two of the most interesting aspects of this development are the Semantic Web and Web services. This paper examines the synergy between Web service technology and simulation. In one direction, Web service processes can be simulated for the purpose of correcting/improving the design. In the other direction, simulation models/components can be built out of Web services. Work on seamlessly using simulation as a part of Web …

Authorization And Access Control Of Application Data In Workflow Systems, Shengli Wu, Amit P. Sheth, John A. Miller, Zongwei Luo Jan 2002

Authorization And Access Control Of Application Data In Workflow Systems, Shengli Wu, Amit P. Sheth, John A. Miller, Zongwei Luo

Kno.e.sis Publications

Workflow Management Systems (WfMSs) are used to support the modeling and coordinated execution of business processes within an organization or across organizational boundaries. Although some research efforts have addressed requirements for authorization and access control for workflow systems, little attention has been paid to the requirements as they apply to application data accessed or managed by WfMSs. In this paper, we discuss key access control requirements for application data in workflow applications using examples from the healthcare domain, introduce a classification of application data used in workflow systems by analyzing their sources, and then propose a comprehensive data authorization and …

The Latent Maximum Entropy Principle, Shaojun Wang, Ronald Rosenfeld, Yunxin Zhao, Dale Schuurmans Jan 2002

The Latent Maximum Entropy Principle, Shaojun Wang, Ronald Rosenfeld, Yunxin Zhao, Dale Schuurmans

Kno.e.sis Publications

We present an extension of Jaynes' maximum entropy principle to handle latent variables. We use an EM algorithm that incorporates nested iterative scaling to approximately calculate maximum entropy solutions for this principle, and give a proof of its convergence.

The Effects Of Serotonin On Functionally Diverse Isolated Lamprey Spinal Cord Neurons, I. V. Batueva, James T. Buchanan, N. P. Veselkin, E. I. Suderevskaya, E. A. Tsvetkov Jan 2002

The Effects Of Serotonin On Functionally Diverse Isolated Lamprey Spinal Cord Neurons, I. V. Batueva, James T. Buchanan, N. P. Veselkin, E. I. Suderevskaya, E. A. Tsvetkov

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The experiments reported here showed that application of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) (100 µ M) did not induce any significant current through the membranes of any of the spinal neurons studied (n = 62). At the same time, the membranes of most motoneurons and interneurons (15 of 18) underwent slight depolarization (2–6 mV) in the presence of 5-HT, which was not accompanied by any change in the input resistance of the cells. Depolarization to 10–20 mV occurred in some cells (3 of 18) of these functional groups, this being accompanied by 20–60% decreases in input resistance. The same concentration of 5-HT …

A Comparison Of Spatial And Temporal Patterns In Epiphytic Macroagal Assemlages Of The Seagrasses Amphibolis And Posidonia Coriacea, Paul Lavery, Mathew Vanderklift

Research outputs pre 2011

Studies of patterns in assemblages of epiphytic macroalgae growing on seagrasses have largely focussed at the scale of leaves or shoots. Few have examined patterns at larger spatial scales or the influence of host seagrass type on these patterns, despite interest in monitoring changes in epiphyte composition that can lead to the death of seagrasses. We studied spatial patterns in assemblages of epiphytic macroalgae on 2 seagrass species with different morphologies and longevity, Amphibolis griffithii and Posidonia coriacea, which co-occur on Success Bank, Western Australia. Epiphyte assemblages were described for each species at a hierarchy of spatial scales (sites separated …

Unexpected Changes In Soil Phosphorus Dynamics Along Pasture Chronosequences In The Humid Tropics, Alan R. Townsend, Gregory P. Asner, Cory C. Cleveland, Margaret E. Lefer, Mercedes M. C. Bustamante

Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences Faculty Publications

Phosphorus (P) is widely believed to limit plant growth and organic matter storage in a large fraction of the world's lowland tropical rain forests. We investigated how the most common land use change in such forests, conversion to cattle pasture, affects soil P fractions along pasture chronosequences in the central Brazilian Amazon and in southwestern Costa Rica. Our sites represent a broad range in rainfall, soil type, management strategies, and total soil P (45.2–1228.0 μg P/g soil), yet we found some unexpected and at times quite similar changes in soil P in all sites. In the Brazilian sites, where rainfall …

Tanaidacea (Crustacea: Peracardia) Of The Gulf Of Mexico. X. The Question Of Being Male, Kim Larsen Jan 2002

Tanaidacea (Crustacea: Peracardia) Of The Gulf Of Mexico. X. The Question Of Being Male, Kim Larsen

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Three new species Parafilitanais mexicana, Collettea elongata, and Paragathotanais medius are described from deep-sea localities in the Gulf of Mexico. The male of Parafilitanais does not vary conspicuously from the female, except for possessing pleopods. Male Paragathotanais reveal that the mouthparts display some degree of sexual dimorphism. Males of all 3 species possess functional mouthparts. The problems identifying male Tanaidacea are discussed. The number of terminal spiniform setae on the maxillule is considered invalid as a diagnostic character. Keys to the species of Parafilitanais and Paragathotanais are given.

Tanapseudes Gutui, A New Species Of Apseudomorphan Tanaidacea (Crustacea: Peracarida) From The Caribbean Sea And The Taxonomic Status Of The Family Tanapseudidae Băcescu, Thomas Hansknecht, Richard W. Heard, Roger Bamber Jan 2002

Heard, Roger Bamber

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Tanapseudes gutui, n. sp., is described from depths of 3–34 m off San Juan, Puerto Rico, and 4– 5 m off Goat Island, Tobago. Tanapseudes sinensis Bamber from Hong Kong waters is re-examined and determined to represent a junior synonym of the type species T. ormuzana Băcescu which was originally collected in the Straights of Hormuz off Iran. Tanapseudes gutui can be distinguished from T. ormuzana by several characters including details of the mouth parts, the presence of a reduced spiniform seta on the distotergal margin of the propodus of pereopod 1, pereonites 3–6 with rounded anterior margins, and …

Aging And Memory For Music: A Review, Andrea R. Halpern, James C. Bartlett Jan 2002

Aging And Memory For Music: A Review, Andrea R. Halpern, James C. Bartlett

Faculty Journal Articles

People of all ages enjoy listening to music, yet most research in musical development has concentrated on infancy through childhood. Our recent research program examined various aspects of music cognition in younger (ages 18 through 30) and older adults (ages 60 through 80) with varying amounts of musical experience. The studies investigated the independent and combined influences of age and experience on a wide assortment of long and short-term memory tasks. Results showed that some musical tasks reflect the same age-related declines as seen in nonmusical tasks, and musical training does not reduce these age-related declines. In other tasks, experience …

Single-Base-Pair Discrimination Of Terminal Mismatches By Using Oligonucleotide Microarrays And Neural Network Analyses, Hidetoshi Urakawa, Peter A. Noble, Said El Fantroussi, John J. Kelly, David A. Stahl Jan 2002

Single-Base-Pair Discrimination Of Terminal Mismatches By Using Oligonucleotide Microarrays And Neural Network Analyses, Hidetoshi Urakawa, Peter A. Noble, Said El Fantroussi, John J. Kelly, David A. Stahl

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The effects of single-base-pair near-terminal and terminal mismatches on the dissociation temperature (T(d)) and signal intensity of short DNA duplexes were determined by using oligonucleotide microarrays and neural network (NN) analyses. Two perfect-match probes and 29 probes having a single-base-pair mismatch at positions 1 to 5 from the 5' terminus of the probe were designed to target one of two short sequences representing 16S rRNA. Nonequilibrium dissociation rates (i.e., melting profiles) of all probe-target duplexes were determined simultaneously. Analysis of variance revealed that position of the mismatch, type of mismatch, and formamide concentration significantly affected the T(d) and signal intensity. …

Development Of A Genomic Approach For The Study Of A Coryneform Bacterial Collection., Carole Feurer Jan 2002

Development Of A Genomic Approach For The Study Of A Coryneform Bacterial Collection., Carole Feurer

Theses

In the last few years, genomics has profoundly changed research in the biological sciences and in particular in microbiology. Recent studies have demonstrated that comparative genomics is a powerful approach contributing to a deeper understanding of the evolution of microorganisms. Bacterial collections are important resources of microorganisms, however, the potential that genomics has to offer remains to be realised as it is still virtually absent in any study involving strain collections. This feature thus framed the experimental objectives for this study, whose aim was to define the most comprehensive way to apply genomic based methods (high throughput sequencing and bioinformatics) …

Functional Morphology And Developmental Biology Of Zebrafish: Reciprocal Illumination From An Unlikely Couple, L. Patricia Hernández, Michael J.F. Barresi, Stephen H. Devoto Jan 2002

Functional Morphology And Developmental Biology Of Zebrafish: Reciprocal Illumination From An Unlikely Couple, L. Patricia Hernández, Michael J.F. Barresi, Stephen H. Devoto

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Functional morphology has benefited greatly from the input of techniques and thinking from other disciplines. This has been especially productive in situations where each discipline has made significant contributions to a particular research topic. A combination of methodologies from functional morphology and developmental biology has allowed us to characterize feeding mechanics of first-feeding larval zebrafish (Danio rerio). Contrary to kinematic patterns commonly seen in adult teleosts, larval zebrafish showed no lateral abduction during the expansive phase of a suction-feeding event. Instead, dorsoventral expansion of the buccal chamber, more typical of patterns seen in primitive fishes, characterized the expansive phase. Moreover, …
