Asymmetrical Force Production In The Maneuvering Flight Of Pigeons, Douglas R. Warrick, Kenneth P. Dial, Andrew A. Biewener

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Downstroke force produced by Rock Doves (Columba livia) as they negotiated an obstacle course was measured using in vivo recordings of delto-pectoral crest strain. During this slow $(<6\ {\rm m}\ {\rm s}^{-1})$ , maneuvering flight, pigeons produced a series of four to six successive wingbeats in which the wing on the outside of the turn produced greater peak force than the wing on the inside of the turn, suggesting that the birds maneuvered in a saltatory manner during slow flight. This asymmetrical downstroke force may be used to increase or reestablish bank lost during upstroke, or it may be directed as thrust to compensate for adverse yaw or create excess yaw to alter the bird's direction of flight. Continuous production of asymmetrical downstroke force through a turn differs from the traditional model of maneuvering flight, in which asymmetrical force is used only to initiate a bank, the forces are briefly reversed to arrest the momentum of the roll and then equalized to maintain the established bank, and the redirected lift of the wings then effects a turn. Although this traditional model probably describes most turns initiated during fast and gliding flight in birds, it underestimates the complexity of maneuvering during slow, flapping flight, where sophisticated kinematics and neuromuscular control are needed to change direction effectively.

Mutational Analysis Of A Transcriptional Activation Region Of The Vp16 Protein Of Herpes Simplex Virus, Susan M. Sullivan, Peter J. Horn, Victoria A. Olson, Allen H. Koop Oct 1998

Mutational Analysis Of A Transcriptional Activation Region Of The Vp16 Protein Of Herpes Simplex Virus, Susan M. Sullivan, Peter J. Horn, Victoria A. Olson, Allen H. Koop

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The VP16 protein of herpes simplex virus is a potent transcriptional activator of the viral immediate early genes. The transcriptional activation region of VP16 can be divided into two functional subregions, here designated VP16N (comprising amino acids 413-456) and VP16C (amino acids 450-490). Assays of VP16C mutants resulting from both random and alanine-scanning mutagenesis indicated that the sidechains of three phenylalanines (at positions 473, 475 and 479) and one acidic residue (glutamate 476) are important for transcriptional activation. Aromatic and bulky hydrophobic amino acids were effective substitutes for each of the three Phe residues, whereas replacement with smaller or polar …

Grassland Birds And Habitat Structure In Sandhills Prairie Managed Using Cattle Or Bison Plus Fire, Randall Griebel, Stephen L. Winter, Allen Steuter Oct 1998

Grassland Birds And Habitat Structure In Sandhills Prairie Managed Using Cattle Or Bison Plus Fire, Randall Griebel, Stephen L. Winter, Allen Steuter

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Grassland birds are known to respond to specific changes in habitat structure, such as plant height and density. However, the response of grassland bird communities to management induced changes in the regional habitat mosaic are less well understood. Grazing by ungulates and fire regimes play an important role in defining the habitat mosaic in the Great Plains. We provide information on bird abundance, distribution, and habitat structure from similar sandhill prairie landscapes managed traditionally with grazing by cattle (Bos taurus) and by a dynamic bison (Bos bison)-plus-fire regime. Although the two management regimes are dissimilar, only …

Increased Photosynthesis Offsets Costs Of Allocation To Sapwood In An Arid Environment, Eileen V. Carey, Ragan M. Callaway, Evan H. Delucia

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We assessed the effect that varying patterns of biomass allocation had on growth of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) growing in the desert climate of the Great Basin and the montane climate of the eastern Sierra Nevada. Prior work established that desert trees have lower leaf:sapwood area ratios than montane trees (0.104 and 0.201 m2/cm2, respectively) and proportionally greater stem respiration. Sapwood:leaf mass ratios are also greater and increase more as a function stem diameter in desert than in montane trees. We hypothesized that this increased allocation of carbon to stem sapwood and stem respiration …

Vegetation Analysis: A Graphical Analysis Of Plant Succession In Desert Communities Affected By Fire, Jeff Lantow Oct 1998

Vegetation Analysis: A Graphical Analysis Of Plant Succession In Desert Communities Affected By Fire, Jeff Lantow

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Mojave Desert is affected by fire every year. With each fire comes the removal of old growth and, in its place, new growth – consisting primarily of those species which thrive in disturbed areas. The focus of my research is to look at plant communities that have been disturbed by fire, and examine the successional pathway of these disturbed environments. The seven environments I analyzed were burned within the last twenty years and are found in the Coleogyne ramosissima ecotone throughout the Spring Mountain range near Las Vegas, Nevada. The data was collected with randomly chosen circle plots in …

Water Conservation In The Las Vegas Valley, Judith M. Keir Oct 1998

Water Conservation In The Las Vegas Valley, Judith M. Keir

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This thesis deals primarily with residential use of water in the Las Vegas Valley, an arid climate located in the Mojave Desert, and whether the education of people living here has any bearing on whether or not they conserve water. Many of the residents of the Las Vegas Valley have moved from other areas of the country, and perhaps are not aware of the fact that there is a limited supply of water available to the Valley. I believe that people are not necessarily wasteful, and that they would want to conserve water, if they were aware that conservation and …

Bacterial Stress Responses To 1-Megahertz Pulsed Ultrasound In The Presence Of Microbubbles, Amy Cheng Vollmer, Sylvia D. Sakyiama Kwakye , '98, Matthew Evan Halpern , '98, E. Carr Everbach Oct 1998

Bacterial Stress Responses To 1-Megahertz Pulsed Ultrasound In The Presence Of Microbubbles, Amy Cheng Vollmer, Sylvia D. Sakyiama Kwakye , '98, Matthew Evan Halpern , '98, E. Carr Everbach

Engineering Faculty Works

Members of a panel of stress-responsive biosensors have been used to study the effect of megahertz frequency ultrasound onEscherichia coli. Insonification causes acoustic cavitation, the collapse of oscillating microbubbles in solution, which can damage bacterial cells. A focused 1-MHz ultrasound transducer, capable of generating a spatial peak pulse average intensity of 500 W/cm2, was used to treat liquid bacterial cultures. Stress-responsive promoters fused to luxCDABE allowed the continuous measurement of light produced as a result of protein damage, DNA damage, oxidative stress, and membrane perturbation. A promoter responsive to ammonia limitation was not transcriptionally activated under test conditions. In contrast …

Morphogenesis Of Douglas Fir Buds Is Altered At Elevated Temperature But Not At Elevated Co2, Martha E. Apple, Melissa S. Lucash, David M. Olszyk, David T. Tingey

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Global climatic change as expressed by increased CO2 and temperature has the potential for dramatic effects on trees. To determine what its effects may be on Pacific Northwest forests, Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii ) seedlings were grown in sun-lit controlled environment chambers at ambient or elevated (+4°C above ambient) temperature, and at ambient or elevated (+200 ppm above ambient) CO2. In 1995–1996 and 1996–1997, elevated CO2 had no effect on vegetative bud morphology, while the following unusual morphological characteristics were found with greater frequency at elevated temperature than at ambient: rosetted buds with reflexed and loosened outer …

Beneficial Arthropods Associated With Buffalograss, Tiffany Heng-Moss, Frederick P. Baxendale, Terrance P. Riordan Oct 1998

Beneficial Arthropods Associated With Buffalograss, Tiffany Heng-Moss, Frederick P. Baxendale, Terrance P. Riordan

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Beneficial arthropods collected from buffalograss, Buchloe dactyloides (Nuttall) Engelmann, evaluation plots and vegetatively established buffalograss lawns included predatory ants, spiders, ground beetles, rove beetles, big-eyed.bugs, and several species of hymenopterous parasitoids. Ants and spiders were the most abundant beneficial arthropods collected, representing 84% of the total beneficial arthropods captured. Pitfall traps collected >2.5 times as many (16,094) beneficial arthropods as sod plug samples (6,054), demonstrating that pitfall traps are a more effective technique than sod plugs for capturing highly mobile surface-dwelling arthropods. Families of parasitoids captured on sticky traps during the 2-yr sampling period included Scelionidae, Encyrtidae, Mymaridae, and Trichogrammatidae. …

Position Effect Takes Precedence Over Target Sequence In Determination Of Adenine Methylation Patterns In The Nuclear Genome Of A Eukaryote, Tetrahymena Thermophila, Kathleen M. Karrer, Teresa A. Van Nuland

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Approximately 0.8% of the adenine residues in the macronuclear DNA of the ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila are modified to N6-methyladenine. DNA methylation is site specific and the pattern of methylation is constant between clonal cell lines. In vivo, modification of adenine residues appears to occur exclusively in the sequence 5′-NAT-3′, but no consensus sequence for modified sites has been found. In this study, DNA fragments containing a site that is uniformly methylated on the 50 copies of the macronuclear chromosome were cloned into the extrachromosomal rDNA. In the novel location on the rDNA minichromosome, the site was …

An Addendum To Anthocharis Midea Dos Passos And Klots 1969: Description Of A New Subspecies From Texas, Ronald R. Gatrelle

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

This paper verifies and expands upon the information presented by dos Passos and Klots in their 1969 systematic revision of Anthocharis midea. Their restriction of the range of A. midea midea to the coastal islands and immediate coast of Georgia and South Carolina, United States is confirmed and expanded north into southern coastal North Carolina. Their range of A. m. annickae is expanded southward from Virginia to central Georgia. A new subspecies, A. midea texana, is described from Texas. Texana is annickae’s ancestor. It differs from annickae only in having greatly reduced black scaling …

Theories Of Structure Versus Theories Of Change, Melanie Mitchell Oct 1998

Theories Of Structure Versus Theories Of Change, Melanie Mitchell

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The dynamics/computation debate recalls a similar debate in the evolutionary biology community concerning the relative primacy of theories of structure versus theories of change. A full account of cognition will require a rapprochement between such theories and will include both computational and dynamical notions. The key to making computation relevant to cognition is not making it analog, but rather understanding how functional information-processing structures can emerge in complex dynamical systems.
