Effect Of Floor Space Allocation On Barrow Performance To 300 Pounds, Mike Brumm, Jim Dahlquist
Effect Of Floor Space Allocation On Barrow Performance To 300 Pounds, Mike Brumm, Jim Dahlquist
Nebraska Swine Reports
One hundred eighty barrows (12/ pen) were given space allocations of 7, 9, and 11 ft2/pig from 43 to 300 lb. There was no effect of space allocation on daily feed intake, lean gain, or carcass backfat depth. Pigs given 9 ft2 grew fastest while pigs given 7 ft2 had the best feed conversion. Daily gain and feed efficiency were worst when pigs were given 11 ft2/pig. Results from this experiment will be useful to producers as they make space allocation decisions for pigs finished at weights heavier than the current U.S. average of 245 …

Pigchamp Summary Of 1994 Reproductive Herd Performance, Mike Brumm, Cate Dewey, Barbara B. Cox, Angela Baysinger
Nebraska Swine Reports
A summary of 51 swine herds in the western cornbelt that used PigCHAMP as their reproductive record system during 1994 was completed. This summary documents the wide range in performance that existed among herds. Using 10th and 90th percentiles, farrowing rate ranged from 69.1% to 88.1%, pigs weaned per litter from 8.1 to 9.8, and litters per mated female from 1.76 to 2.36. Overall reproductive performance, reported as pigs weaned per mated female per year, ranged from 14.8 to 22.4 with a 50th percentile value of 19.3. These results can be used for planning and decision making purposes in individual …
House Mouse Damage To Insulation, Scott E. Hygnstrom
House Mouse Damage To Insulation, Scott E. Hygnstrom
Nebraska Swine Reports
House mice (Mus musculus) were introduced into 20, 4-inch thick insulated panels and provided unlimited food and water for six months. Mouse populations increased 3-to 4-fold inside the insulated panels. Aluminum foil vapor barriers were severely damaged by mice and in all cases, reduced to less than half of their original mass. All of the insulation materials tested (insulation board, fiberglass batt, rockwool, beadboard, and vermiculite) sustained significant levels of damage as measured by increased thermal conductance. Researchers have yet to discover an insulative material that is not susceptible to house mouse damage. Producers should use construction techniques …

Nebraska Swine Reports
Pigs treated alike vary in performance due to their different genetic makeup and to environmental effects we cannot completely control. When a group of pigs is randomly allotted to treatments it is nearly impossible to get an “equal” group of pigs on each treatment. The natural variability among pigs and the number of pigs per treatment determine the expected variation among treatment groups due to random sampling.

G96-1291 Housing For Horses Flooring For Stalls, Kathleen P. Anderson
G96-1291 Housing For Horses Flooring For Stalls, Kathleen P. Anderson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses various types of flooring for use in horse stalls.
Stalled horses require much greater care, attention and labor. The availability of optimal ventilation with fresh clean air circulation is essential to healthy horses. Adequate ventilation reduces the presence of air contaminants such as dust, molds and irritating gases from decomposing manure.
Materials used for stall floors can greatly influence air quality, ease of stall maintenance and manure removal. Stall floors must be made of durable material which is not slippery, yet is absorbent, easy to clean, and resistant to pawing. Whatever the materials used, floors should require …

G96-1305 Water Runoff From Sprinkler Irrigation: A Case Study, Norman L. Klocke, William L. Kranz, C. Dean Yonts, Kelly Wertz
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide illustrates the influence of soil texture, topography and irrigation system characteristics on potential runoff.
When water is applied to a field through a sprinkler irrigation system, it should soak into the soil where it lands rather than drain to a low spot or off the field altogether. Runoff causes non-uniformity of water application, poor irrigation efficiency and possible leaching of chemicals to the groundwater. Some systems like LEPA (Low Energy Precision Application) are designed so water does not immediately soak into the soil. However, proper LEPA designs also call for tillage practices that hold the water on the …

Early Maturing Varieties And Soybean Cyst Nematodes: Will This "Marriage" Work?, Colleen C. Steele, Larry J. Grabau
Early Maturing Varieties And Soybean Cyst Nematodes: Will This "Marriage" Work?, Colleen C. Steele, Larry J. Grabau
Agronomy Notes
Soybean cyst nematode (SCN) is widely distributed in Kentucky's soybean growing areas. The use of SCN-resistant varieties has long been a recommended production practice for infested fields. However, continuous use of such varieties can result in a shift to a race of SCN which is able to vigorously attack previously resistant varieties. For his reason, many states have long recommended that producers periodically grow a crop of SCN-susceptible soybeans within a crop rotation when SCN populations are too low to cause yield reductions. In Kentucky, the UK Plant Pathology Department recommends a four year rotation in SCN-infested fields [PPA3; "Wanted: …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the benefits of buffalograss turf plantings.
Buffalograss (Buchloë dactyloides) is a native grass species which has prospered on the Great Plains for centuries. Both cyclic and prolonged droughts have allowed it to evolve water use efficiency and sod forming ability. People are using this short, fine-leaved prairie grass as an ecologically sound and energy efficient turf.

This study reports on the δ18O and δ13C composition of the skeleton from a 240-year-old specimen of Montastraea faveolata growing in Biscayne National Park, South Florida. Annual variations in the δ18O of the skeleton deposited during the summer months show a bimodal correlation with summer rainfall. During wetter years, the δ18O of the coral skeleton and the amount of precipitation during the summer months are inversely correlated (r = -0. 7) reflecting dilution of the seawater by meteoric water lower in δ18O. During years in which summer rainfall is less …

Ecology And Behavior Of Maxillipius Commensalis, A Gorgonophile Amphipod From Madang, Papua New Guinea (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Maxillipiidae), James Darwin Thomas
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Maxillipius commensalis Lowry, is reported as an ectocommensal on arborescent gorgonaceans from coral reefs at Madang, Papua New Guinea. The family is reviewed and the male of this species is described. In-situ behavior studies show the amphipods to crowd close together in large numbers on one side of a gorgonian stalk. The terminal articles of the sixth pereopods are greatly elongated and whip-like and are waved at the sides in a circular motion, possibly facilitating spacing or feeding. When disturbed, the amphipods react en masse as a coherent group rather than as individuals.
