Striped Bass Research, Virginia - Annual Report 1987-88, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science

Reports

The research reported herein is directly in response to priorities established in the "Action Plan" of the Emergency Striped Bass Study (the Chafee Amendment (PL 96-118) of the Anadromous Fish Conservation Act (PL 89 -304 )) . The Amendment was the result of a decline in striped bass landings along the Atlantic Coast that began in the mid-1970's. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) had previously conducted a juvenile striped bass seining program from 1967 through 1973 which was discontinued at that point due to a loss of funding. The program was reinstated in 1980 with funding from the …

Heterotrophic Bacterial Production: Relationships To Biological And Abiological Factors In Estuarine Environments, Eric Thor Koepfler Jan 1989

Heterotrophic Bacterial Production: Relationships To Biological And Abiological Factors In Estuarine Environments, Eric Thor Koepfler

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Section 1. Ecotoxicological effects of creosote contamination on benthic bacterial communities in the Elizabeth River, Virginia were investigated using both structural and functional microbial parameters. Results indicated that cell specific and total heterotrophic bacterial production parameters were depressed in a dose dependent manner with increasing sediment PAH concentrations. Toxicity effects upon production were modified by temporal trends associated with temperature as well as spatial sediment characteristics. of the parameters employed, the tritiated thymidine production assay was found to be the most sensitive for detection of ecotoxicological effects. Section 2. Bacterial abundance and production were examined during a destratification event in …

Pcb Congener Analysis With Hall Electrolytic Conductivity Detection, Robert D. Edstrom Jan 1989

Pcb Congener Analysis With Hall Electrolytic Conductivity Detection, Robert D. Edstrom

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This work reports the development of an analytical methodology for the analysis of PCB congeners based on integrating relative retention data provided by other researchers. The retention data were transposed into a multiple retention marker system which provided good precision in the calculation of relative retention indices for PCB congener analysis. Analytical run times for the developed methodology were approximately one hour using a commercially available GC capillary column. A Tracor Model 700A Hall Electrolytic Conductivity Detector (HECD) was employed in the GC detection of Aroclor standards and environmental samples. Responses by the HECD provided good sensitivity and were reasonably …

Uptake Kinetics And Toxicity Of Diazinon In The American Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica Gmelin, Ruth L. Williams Jan 1989

Uptake Kinetics And Toxicity Of Diazinon In The American Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica Gmelin, Ruth L. Williams

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Several aspects of effects of the organophosphate pesticide diazinon on the American oyster Crassostrea virginica Gmelin were investigated. Uptake of diazinon directly from water was compared with uptake of diazinon sorbed to either fine sediment or algae; the primary route of assimilation seems to be from the water. Concentrations of diazinon between 0.91 and 2.03 mg/L inhibit shell growth during 96 hours of exposure; there is a sharp threshold of effect for this response which is probably an indirect one caused by lack of food during shell closure. Acetylcholinesterase inhibition is significant in oyster heart tissue at concentrations of approximately …

The Influence Of Tributyltin On Various Aspects Of Activation And Reactive Oxygen Formation In Oyster Toadfish (Opsanus Tau) Macrophages, Charles D. Rice

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The effects of tributyltin (TBT) on phorbol myristate acetate (PMA)- and calcium ionophore (A23187)-stimulated peritoneal macrophages from oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) were evaluated in a luminol-dependent chemiluminescence (CL) assay. PMA-stimulated CL responses were increased by in vitro exposure to 50 ug/L TBT, but depressed to baseline values by 500 ug/L TBT. A23187-stimulated CL increased with 5 ug/L and 50 ug/L TBT, and depressed by 500 ug/L TBT. Responses stimulated by synergistic doses of PMA and A23187 were increased by 50 ug/L TBT and depressed by 500 ug/L TBT. Enhanced PMA- and A23187-stimulated CL following TBT exposure returned to baseline values …

Gulf and Caribbean Research

A new species of sand-burrowing amphipod, Acanthohaustorius uncinus, is described from vegetated and unvegetated estuarine sands from St. Andrew Bay, Florida and East Ship Island, Mississippi. The genus Acanthohaustorius has been informally recorded from St. Andrew Bay, but this species is now formally described from the Gulf of Mexico. A. uncinus n. sp. is most similar to A. millsi of the Open American Atlantic coast. It differs from A. millsi in the presence of a dorsally directed, hooked spine on the peduncle of uropod 1 and the totally cleft telson lobes. Information on the ecology of A. uncinus n. …

Nitrogen And Phosphorus Cycling Strategies In Two Tidal Freshwater Macrophytes, Peltandra Virginica And Spartina Cynosuroides, Paul Milton. Booth Jr Jan 1989

Nitrogen And Phosphorus Cycling Strategies In Two Tidal Freshwater Macrophytes, Peltandra Virginica And Spartina Cynosuroides, Paul Milton. Booth Jr

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Monotypic stands of the macrophytes Peltandra virginica and Spartina cynosuroides, which shared a common boundary, were studied at Sweethall Marsh, a tidal freshwater marsh located on the Pamunkey River within the Chesapeake Bay estuarine system, Virginia. Compartmental models indicate that both Peltandra and Spartina take up, internally cycle, and release to the environment, significant levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. Models also suggest that Peltandra and Spartina and their associated sediment compartments are capable of regulating nitrogen and phosphorus fluxes through their uptake and storage capacity. Nitrogen use efficiency was significantly higher in the shoots and roots of Spartina compared to …

Excorallana Delaneyi, N. Sp. (Crustacea: Isopoda: Excorallanidae) From The Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico, With Observations On Adult Characters And Sexual Dimorphism In Related Species Of Excorallana Stebbing, 1904, Ilya Stone, Richard W. Heard

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Excorallana delaneyi n. sp. was found associated with the sponges Halichondria sp. and Hymeniacidon sp. in St. Joseph Bay, Florida. Excorallana delaneyi is most similar to E. berbicensis Boone, 1918 described from Brazil, but it can be distinguished from that species and other members of the genus by the shape and spination of the uropods and pleotelson. A key is presented to separate E. delaneyi and the other seven species of Excorallana that lack lateral notches in the pleotelson. Morphological differences between the subadults and adults of E. delaneyi are described, and possible taxonomic problems resulting from such differences in …

Habitat Use And Population Biology Of Bahamian Spiny Lobster, William F. Herrnkind, Romauld N. Lipcius

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

The spiny lobster Panulirus argus is extremely important both for basic scientific research (Davis, 1980) and the seafood industry. Despite the economic significance of Bahamian lobsters, their ecology has been the subject of limited study. Investigators have recorded fishery information (Smith, 1948, 1951), mass migration (Herrnkind and Kanciruk, 1978; Kanciruk and Hermkind, 1978; Hcrmkind, 1980), autumnal reproduction (Kanciruk and Herrnkind, 1976), commercial size composition (Simpson, 1976), life history and ecology of juveniles, and experimental fishing techniques (Waugh and Waugh, 1977; Waugh, 1980). (...) We report here on a 10-month (Sept, 1979-June, 1980) study of Panulirus argus in the region of …

Virginia's Pelagic Recreational Fishery: Biological, Socioeconomic And Fishery Components, Eleanor A. Bochenek Jan 1989

Virginia's Pelagic Recreational Fishery: Biological, Socioeconomic And Fishery Components, Eleanor A. Bochenek

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Catch, effort, fleet size and boat owner expenditure data were collected on Virginia's recreational marlin/tuna fishery for the 1983-1985 seasons. Logbooks, dockside interviews and a telephone survey were evaluated to determine which method was the most efficient and effective for collecting and estimating catch and effort for Virginia's pelagic recreational fishery. In 1984, logbooks were used to collect catch and effort data and fishing effort was estimated using Bochenek's method. Very few fishermen returned their logbooks and as a result this data is probably less reliable than the data collected in other years. Due to the poor return of logbooks, …

Are Artificial "Witham" Surface Collectors Adequate Indicators Of Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, Recruitment?, Mark J. Butler Iv, William F. Herrnkind Jan 1989

Are Artificial "Witham" Surface Collectors Adequate Indicators Of Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, Recruitment?, Mark J. Butler Iv, William F. Herrnkind

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Understanding the local dynamics of Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) postlarval influx, settlement, and recruitment may be essential for the responsible management of this important and heavily exploited resource. Most lobster recruitment research programs in the Caribbean employ derivations of the "Witham"-type surface collector to monitor postlarval (puerulus) lobster influx. However, the relevance of data obtained from surface collectors with respect to the estimation of actual puerulus influx, settlement, or recruitment to subsequent benthic juvenile stages remains untested. We investigated that relevance on regional (i.e., tens of kilometers) and local (i.e., tens of meters) scales by examining the …

Community Responses To Variable Predation: Field Studies With Sunfish And Freshwater Macroinvertebrates, Mark J. Butler Iv Jan 1989

Community Responses To Variable Predation: Field Studies With Sunfish And Freshwater Macroinvertebrates, Mark J. Butler Iv

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The impact of variable predation by bluegill sunfish on macroinvertebrate prey in a North Florida lake is examined. Variable predation may occur in many systems and may contribute substantially to the spatial heterogeneity, temporal inconstancy and species composition of prey communities.

Patchy, temporally variable predation characterized middepth and deep lake habitats, whereas in the shallow zone predation was relatively constant and homogeneous. Predation varied significantly every 2-4 wk in the mid-depth zone, but varied little between consecutive weeks or days. Caging experiments revealed that variable predation altered prey community composition and increased the mean size and size range of some …

Effects Of Intensive Fishing Effort On The Population Structure Of Quahogs, Mercenaria Mercenaria (Linnaeus, 1758), In Narragansett Bay, Michael Rice, Charles Hickox, Itrat Zehra

Michael A Rice

Mercenaria mercenaria and sediment samples were collected from 3 locations in Narragansett Bay: Greenwich Cove, Greenwich Bay, and the West Passage. Greenwich Cove has been closed to shellfishing for several decades. Average density of quahogs in the cove was 190/m super(2), ranging from 32 m super(2)-500/m super(2) in 30 quadrats. Average valve length of quahogs in Greenwich Cove was 62 mm. Average density in Greenwich Bay was 78/m super(2), ranging from 8/m super(2)-184/m super(2). Average valve length was 31 mm. There was a slightly higher content of very fine-grained sands, silts, and clays in the Greenwich Cove sediments. Average Mercenaria) …
