The Role Of Erythropoietin In The Anemia Of Chronic Renal Failure, N. Kevin Krane Sep 1983

The Role Of Erythropoietin In The Anemia Of Chronic Renal Failure, N. Kevin Krane

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The major factors responsible for the anemia of chronic renal failure are decreased erythropoietin (Ep) production, the presence of inhibitors of erythropoiesis, blood loss, and hemolysis. Ep, which is produced in the kidney, probably exerts its effect on the colony-forming units of the erythrocyte. Ep levels fall with worsening renal function (creatinine clearances in the range of 2-40 ml/min). but they rise to their highest levels in the immediate predialysis period, probably due to severe ischemia of both renal and extrarenal production sites. When patients are begun on hemodialysis, Ep levels fall, and the hematocrit rises. Erythropoietin therapy in the …

Identification Of Four Complementary Rna Species In Akabane Virus-Infected Cells, Asit K. Pattnaik, G. Abraham Sep 1983

Identification Of Four Complementary Rna Species In Akabane Virus-Infected Cells, Asit K. Pattnaik, G. Abraham

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The analysis of RNA extracted from purified Akabane virus demonstrated the presence of three size classes of single-stranded RNAs with sedimentation coefficients of 31S (large, L), 26S (medium, M), and 13S (small, S). Molecular weights of these RNA species were estimated to be 2.15 x 106,1.5 X 106, and 0.48 x 106 for the L, M, and S RNAs, respectively. Hybridization analysis involving viral genomic RNA and RNA from virus-infected cells resulted in the identification of four virus-specific cRNA species in infected cells. These cRNAs were found to be nonpolyadenylated by their inability to bind …

LATE WOOD DUCK BROODS. I don't know if weather affected the nesting of some Wood Ducks or not, but 8 August (1982) seems a little late for baby woodies. At the Iowa Settling Pond, there were two hens with new families; one hen had two ducklings that were about 5 to 6 days old, and another hen had a brood that was only a few hours out of the nest. The Wood Duck raises but one brood in a season in any part of its wide range, according to Bent, and has always been considered and early nester. I searched …

The Zinc Status Of Pregnant Vegetarian Women, Michelle J. Abu-Assal Sep 1983

The Zinc Status Of Pregnant Vegetarian Women, Michelle J. Abu-Assal

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The zinc status of twelve lacto-ovo-vegetariah pregnant women and seventeen non-vegetarian pregnant women was evaluated. Zinc intakes were calculated from three-day dietary records and twenty-four hour dietary histories. Plasma zinc levels were drawn during the last trimester of pregnancy and approximately ten weeks postpartum. Gestational age at birth, birthweight, and APGAR scores of the infants born were obtained from the medical charts. Dietary zinc intakes for the vegetarians (10.5 ± 4.0 mg) did not differ significantly from the intakes of the non-vegetarians (10.9 ± 3.0 mg). The vegetarian last trimester plasma zinc levels (47.9 ± 12.4 mcg/dl) and postpartum plasma …

Residents' Annoyance Responses To Aircraft Noise Events, United States, National Aeronautics And Space Administration Sep 1983

Residents' Annoyance Responses To Aircraft Noise Events, United States, National Aeronautics And Space Administration

Transportation

In a study conducted in the vicinity of Salt Lake City International Airport, community residents reported their annoyance with individual aircraft flyovers during rating sessions conducted in their homes. Annoyance ratings were obtained at different times of the day. Aircraft noise levels were measured, and other characteristics of the aircraft were noted by trained observers. Metrics commonly used for assessing aircraft noise were compared, but none performed significantly better than A-weighted sound pressure level. A significant difference was found between the ratings of commercial jet aircraft and general aviation propeller aircraft, with the latter being judged less annoying. After the …

Microsurgical Techniques In Cerebral Revascularization, James I. Ausman, Fernando G. Diaz, R. A. De Los Reyes, Carl Shrontz, Jeffrey Pearce, Manuel Dujovny

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The surgical management of patients with cerebrovascular disease is reviewed. Our approach to the management of extracranial cerebral vasculature is discussed first, and increasingly more complex areas are then presented. Our discussion reviews the applications of carotid endarterectomy, extracranial-intracranial bypass procedures, and vertebral extracranial reconstruction.

Methodological Issues In Studying Treatment Effects In Patients With Cerebrovascular Disease, Mark W. Shatz Sep 1983

Methodological Issues In Studying Treatment Effects In Patients With Cerebrovascular Disease, Mark W. Shatz

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Evaluation of the neuropsychological effects of surgical treatment on cerebrovascular disease is beset by numerous methodological difficulties. These include problems specific to this patient population as well as others inherent in all retrospective studies. Five such problems are described: 1) nonrandomized subject selection; 2) dropout from follow-up; 3) natural history of cerebrovascular disease; 4) effects of hospitalization; and 5) the role of practice effects. This paper examines these methodological problems for their impact on our knowledge and proposes alternative research directions to address their shortcomings.

A Radiologic Method Of Assessment Of Bone And Joint Destruction In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Gilbert B. Bluhm, David W. Smith, Walter M. Mikulashek

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

We employed radiographic analysis and a numerical scoring system to evaluate bone and joint destruction in 39 patients who received aspirin and nonsteroidal, antiinflammatory drugs or benoxaprofen therapy over a continuous study period of 36 months (mean). Our purpose was to compare the radiological changes in these patients over two observation intervals and to test the reproducibility of the scoring system. Our modified rating system has sufficient intra-rater reliability to provide a statistically adequate, reproducible method for evaluating bone and joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis.

Synchronous Bilateral Seminomas And Teratoma, Harry J. Bonnell

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The simultaneous occurrence of seminomas is extremely rare. Only 23 cases have previously been reported. One case has been reported of extrascrotal mature teratoma following primary pure seminoma of the testis. We describe a 47-year-old patient who presented with synchronous bilateral seminomas and a left-sided, mature teratoma of the testis.

Covalent Binding And Other Mechanisms Of Primaquine Toxicity, Lucille S. K. Chau Yau Sep 1983

Covalent Binding And Other Mechanisms Of Primaquine Toxicity, Lucille S. K. Chau Yau

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A dose-dependent covalent binding of primaquine to mouse liver microsomal protein was found in both in vitro and in vivo studies. The binding in vitro was linear during the first 90 minutes of incubation and dependent on the concentration of mouse liver microsomal protein. The in vitro covalent binding was markedly enhanced by cofactors. Pretreatment of mice with phenobarbital, a cytochrome P450 inducer, increased the microsomal cytochrome P450 content and the in vitro covalent binding significantly. Binding was markedly inhibited when microsomal metabolism inhibitors (SK&F-525A, metyrapone and piperonyl butoxide), and sulfhydryl-contai ni ng compounds were added to the incubation system. …

York River Slack Water Data Report : Temperature, Salinity, Dissolved Oxygen, 1971 - 1980, T. J. Brooks

Reports

The slack water survey program, provides an extended series of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and nutrient measurements along the York River. These have been used to:

1) calibrate, verify, and update mathematical models; 2) provide a baseline against which effects of unusual events have been measured; and could be used to: 3) establish annual and longer period "climatological" trends in response to changing natural phenomena and man-made modifications to the estuary; 4) provide a basis against which fluctuations in biota could be compared.

This report contains station locations, survey schedules, field procedures, sample handling procedures, and data reduction and storage …

Rapid Decline In Acetylcholine Release And Content Of Rat Extensor Digitorum Longus Muscle After Denervation, Diana Linden, Michael Newton, Alan Grinnell, Donald Jenden Aug 1983

Rapid Decline In Acetylcholine Release And Content Of Rat Extensor Digitorum Longus Muscle After Denervation, Diana Linden, Michael Newton, Alan Grinnell, Donald Jenden

Diana Linden

The amount of acetylcholine (ACh) and choline (Ch) in normal and denervated rat extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles, as well as that released spontaneously from these muscles, was determined by an extremely sensitive gas chromatographicmass spectrometric assay method. We found decreases in ACh content and spontaneous, resting ACh release as early as 8 h after denervation. The ACh content decreased to a plateau of 30% of control by 11 h; ACh release attained a plateau of 50% of control several hours later. These results showed that in denervated EDL muscles ACh content and spontaneous release (measured biochemically) decreased before nerve-evoked …

The Distribution And Morphology Of Fucus Distichus In An Estuarine Environment And The Effect Of Selected Ions On The Uptake Of Inorganic Carbon And Nitrate, Dale Howard Robinson Aug 1983

The Distribution And Morphology Of Fucus Distichus In An Estuarine Environment And The Effect Of Selected Ions On The Uptake Of Inorganic Carbon And Nitrate, Dale Howard Robinson

Dissertations and Theses

The morphology, distribution, and habitat of dwarf and normal forms of Fucus distichus in Nehalem Bay were examined. The dwarf form lacked the holdfast and sexual structures of the normal form and was more highly branched. Examples of the dwarf form were found growing as outgrowths of fragmented normal forms indicating that both forms are the same species. The normal form occurred attached to rocks near the mouth of the bay in waters of oceanic salinity. The dwarf form occurred as a free-living form in the salt marshes and in waters of lower salinity. These observations suggested that the occurrence …

Biosynthesis And Degradation Of Storage Protein In Spores Of The Fungus Botryodiplodia Theobromae, Gary Petersen, Kurt Dahlberg, James L. Van Etten

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Muiridin, a spore-specific protein of the fungus Botryodiplodia theobromae, comprises about 25% of the mature pycnidiospore protein. It has an apparent molecular weight of 16,000 to 17,000 and is rich in glutamine, asparagine, and arginink. Muiridin is synthesized in developing spores via a precursor with an apparent molecular welght of 24,000. Two other polypeptides present in young developing spores with apparent molecular weights of 18,000 and 15,000 are immunologically related to muiridin. We propose a pathway for muiridin synthesis. Muiridin is actively degraded during the germination of spores from 30-day old cultures. This degradation is independent of exogenous amino …

Foraging Ecology Of Temperate-Zone And Tropical Woodpeckers, Robert A. Askins Aug 1983

Foraging Ecology Of Temperate-Zone And Tropical Woodpeckers, Robert A. Askins

Biology Faculty Publications

The foraging behavior of 11 species of woodpeckers in Guatemala, Maryland, and Minnesota was studied in order to test the seasonal stability hypothesis. This hypothesis predicts that specialization and species richness should be no greater for tropical wood-excavators than for those in the temperate zone because wood-excavators in both regions are buffered against seasonal change. Niche breadth values for six variables that describe foraging methods and perches were calculated by two methods. Unweighted niche breadth values were similar for tropical and temperate woodpeckers for all variables except foraging techniques; in this case the temperate species are more specialized. With weighted …

Areographic Representation Of Faunal Characteristics Through A "Second Order" Relational Approach, Charles H. Smith Aug 1983

Areographic Representation Of Faunal Characteristics Through A "Second Order" Relational Approach, Charles H. Smith

DLPS Faculty Publications

Areographic analysis has traditionally depended on primary data consisting of location-specific tallies of presence or absence of given forms. In the present work, an alternate manner of representing distributions is suggested. Regional units are first established, and presence and absence of the forms under consideration in these units is noted. The relation of the biota at any given point location to all others is then established through examination of the former's characteristics of inclusion in the latter. This is accomplished by detailing regional level trends of inclusion and setting up a "second-order" distribution of associations. Two kinds of descriptive information …
