Genetic Variation In The Timing Of Gonadal Maturation And Spawning Of The Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin), Bruce J. Barber, Susan E. Ford, Robert N. Wargo

VIMS Articles

The gonadal cycles of four groups of eastern oysters, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin), including native stocks collected that year and inbred strains (reared in Delaware Bay for 5-6 generations) from both Long Island Sound and Delaware Bay, were compared in Delaware Bay in 1987. Inbred strains resembled their respective native stocks; both Long Island groups initiated gonadal development and spawning about one month earlier and spawned over a shorter duration than both Delaware Bay groups. Analysis of covariance revealed that the effect of time on gonadal development was statistically different (P I 0.05) for all between-location group comparisons, but not for …

A Study Into The Feasibility Of Establishing A System For The Buy-Back Of Salmon Fishing Authorisations And Related Endorsements., P. J. Monaghan Aug 1991

A Study Into The Feasibility Of Establishing A System For The Buy-Back Of Salmon Fishing Authorisations And Related Endorsements., P. J. Monaghan

Fisheries management papers

A buy-back system for the buy-back of under performing salmon authorisations is suggested as the most cost effective method of reducing the number of salmon fishing units. It could be of benefit to commercial salmon fishermen and could be achieved at relatively modest cost. The alternative of implementing a buy-back system of interest to all salmon authorisation holders could be extraordinary expensive as salmon fishermen place a high value on lifestyle.

Biodepuration Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons From A Bivalve Mollusk, Mercenaria Mercenaria L, John T. Tanacredi Ph.D., Raul R. Cardenas Aug 1991

Biodepuration Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons From A Bivalve Mollusk, Mercenaria Mercenaria L, John T. Tanacredi Ph.D., Raul R. Cardenas

Faculty Works: CERCOM

Mercenaria mercenaria, exposed in vitro for 48 h to nine parent polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in waste crankcase oil (WCCO) and analysed by multiparametric analysis over a 45- day depuration period in an activated carbon filtration aquaria system, did not depurate PAHs, but rather maintained them at detectable levels. Uptake of PAHs was shown to be directly related to clam weight. A cluster analysis of empirical results reaffirmed a biostabilization in PAH groupings in clam tissue over a 45-day depuration period and exhibited no evidence of a decreasing trend in total PAHs when subjected to ANOVA. Due to the …

A Discussion Of Options For Effort Reduction., Southern Demersal Gillnet And Demersal Longline Fishery Management Advisory Committe Jul 1991

A Discussion Of Options For Effort Reduction., Southern Demersal Gillnet And Demersal Longline Fishery Management Advisory Committe

Fisheries management papers

The committee prefers to reduce effort in the fishery by improving the effectiveness of the 50 per cent reduction on transfer rule. To do this it is necessary to prevent the use of lease arrangements which act as a form of transfer. Some consideration could also be given to encouraging transfer of licences by protecting purchased units against further effort reductions. The Minister for Fisheries has determined that ownership statement must be completed prior to licence renewal each year. It is hoped that this will prevent licence holders from using lease arrangements to effect transfers and so avoid the loss of …

Estimation Of Relative Abundance Of Recreationally Important Finfish In The Virginia Portion Of Chesapeake Bay: Annual Progress Report 1990-1991, James A. Colvocoresses, Patrick J. Geer

Reports

A recent analysis of the Virginia portion of the National Marine Fisheries Service Marine Recreational Fisheries Statistics Survey (VMRC 1985) showed that Virginia marine recreational catches were dominated by six species (spot, croaker, weakfish, black sea bass, summer flounder, and bluefish) which constituted over 85% of the total estimated catch by both numbers caught and weight landed. All of these species except bluefish heavily utilize the lower Chesapeake Bay as a nursery area for early juveniles which are highly vulnerable to bottom trawls.

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Waters: 1990 Annual Summary, Bruce J. Barber Feb 1991

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Waters: 1990 Annual Summary, Bruce J. Barber

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts surveys ofoyster spatfall (or "setting") in Virginia waters throughout the summer reproductive period. This survey provides an estimate of the potential of a particular area for receiving a "strike" or set of oysters on the bottom and helps define the timing of setting events. Information obtained from this effort is valuable to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) for its shell repletion program, and to private oyster growers, both of which are interested in maximizing the timing of shell planting. In addition, by maintaining a long-term data base, trends in spatfall throughout …

The Economic Impact Of Recreational Fishing In Western Australia., R. K. Linchner

Fisheries management papers

The Minister for Fisheries commissioned Economic Research Associates to carry out a study of the economic impact of recreational fishing in Western Australia. Two surveys were conducted to determine how much recreational fishers spend during the year on goods and services in order to go fishing. One involved telephone interviews of 401 recreational fishers, who were selected from a stratified random sample of households in five major regions of the state. The other survey employed a self enumeration questionnaire sent to randomly selected licensed recreational fishers, as well as being made available on non-random self-selection basis through fishing clubs and …

Predation Risk And The Importance Of Cover For Juvenile Rainbow Trout In Lentic Systems, R. A. Tabor, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss stocked in midelevation reservoirs in Utah inhabit shallow nearshore areas and are vulnerable to predation from piscivorous fish and birds. We determined the use and importance of nearshore habitats by (1) measuring habitat selection by, prey availability to, and feeding of juvenile rainbow trout in two reservoirs with populations of predators, and (2) measuring survival and growth rates in the presence and absence of cover in a pond experiment where adult brown trout Salmo trutta were predators. In the reservoirs juvenile rainbow trout (60–120 mm standard length) were abundant in complex inshore habitats but avoided …

Trace Elements In Existing Wetlands And Proposed Mitigation Sites In The U.S. Bureau Of Reclamation's Shoshone Rehbilitation & Betterment Project, Park And Bighorn Counties, Wyoming, Pedro Ramirez Jr., Joni Armstrong

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) conducted a baseline inventory of trace elements at proposed mitigation sites and existing wetlands within the Shoshone Project for the Great Plains Region of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Mitigation proposed for wetland losses attributed to the Shoshone Rehabilitation and Betterment Project consists of wetland creation or enhancement within the project area. The quality of irrigation drainage and its effects on fish and wildlife are potential concerns with the existing project. The two sediment samples collected from a large alkali flat near Deaver Reservoir had elevated selenium concentrations (12 and 13 ug/g dry …

Metals And Organic Compounds In Missouri River Fish In 1988 Boyd County, Nebraska To Kansas City, Missouri, George T. Allen, R. Mark Wilson

United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications

We conducted this project to assess the concentrations of natural and anthropogenic contaminants in fish of the Missouri River from the Nebraska/South Dakota border to Kansas City, Missouri. We collected 45 composite samples of eight fish species from nine locations on the river. We were unable to collect all species at all locations, but the collections allowed us to compare concentrations within trophic levels and at different locations. Comparisons in this project are based on concentrations in composites of fish that may have been of different ages. Also, the comparisons of different species should be treated with caution because' different …

Reproduction, Age And Growth, And Movements Of The Gulf Butterfish Peprilus-Burti, Michael D. Murphy, Mark E. Chittenden

VIMS Articles

Collections were made for gulf butterfish Peprilus burti along a cross-shelf transect at depths of 5-100 m in the Gulf of Mexico off Texas from October 1977 to July 1980. Butterfish mature at 100-160 mm fork length as they approach age I. Spawning occurs primarily from September through May, but length frequencies indicate it concentrates, or is most successful, in distinct "Winter" (late January-mid-May) and "Fall" (early September-late October) periods that coincide with downcoast, alongshore currents (toward Mexico). Gonad data and persistence of small fish indicate spawning in winter, but at a low level. Spawning probably occurs offshore and upcoast …

Effect Of Neutral Red Stain On Settlement Ability Of Oyster Pediveligers, Crassostrea Virginica, Patrick Baker Jan 1991

Effect Of Neutral Red Stain On Settlement Ability Of Oyster Pediveligers, Crassostrea Virginica, Patrick Baker

VIMS Articles

The effect of neutral red stain on the settlement of oyster Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin) pediveligers was examined. Larvae were offered two types of substrate: oyster shell and acetate sheets. Settlement was measured as the proportion of pediveligers settled after 24 hours and analyzed with two-factor ANOV A. Staining did not significantly affect settlement, although settlement onto acetate was much lower than onto oyster shell.

Diseases Of Mahi Mahi Or Common Dolphin Fish, Coryphaena Hippurus In Australia, Jeremy S. Langdon Jan 1991

Diseases Of Mahi Mahi Or Common Dolphin Fish, Coryphaena Hippurus In Australia, Jeremy S. Langdon

Fisheries research bulletins

The diseases encountered in mahi mahi, Coryphaena hippurus, in a land-based hatchery, grow-out sea-cages, and from wild populations between 1987 and 1990 were predominately due to protozoan and metazoan parasites. "Milky flesh", or flesh liquefaction post-mortem, due to Kudoa thyrsites, Trichodina gill infections, and eye lesions induced by Benedenia were the most serious infectious diseases of cultured fish. Bacterial diseases were limited to secondary opportunistic infections and fin "rot", and no fungal or viral conditions were detected. Non-infectious diseases included vitamin E deficiency in fry, lateral canal erosions, and miscellaneous dietary and therapeutic toxicities.
