Turkish Journal of Botany
The eastern Mediterranean region is one of the main areas of the Mediterranean vegetation containing Calabrian cluster pine (Pinus brutia Ten., Pinaceae) forests and terebinth (Pistacia terebinthus L., Anacardiaceae) communities. This study was carried out with the leaves, shoots, leaf litters, and soils of Calabrian cluster pine and terebinth growing on both marl and conglomerate substrata in the eastern Mediterranean region (Turkey) to determine average C, N, P and K contents, and the amounts of humic and fulvic acid in these plant soils. The average element contents of leaf, shoot, leaf litter and soil samples of both plants from the …

Genetic Diversity Among Nile Delta Isolates Of Rhizoctonia Solani Kühn Based On Pathogenicity, Compatibility, Isozyme Analysis And Total Protein Pattern, Yehia A.G. Mahmoud, Reda M. Gaafar, H. M. Mubarak
Turkish Journal of Botany
The present study obtained 12 isolates from Rhizoctonia solani Kühn isolated from Cotton L., Trifolium L. and Vicia faba L. from different localities in the Nile Delta of Egypt. All strains were pathogenic and caused seed rot, wilt, stunting, and pre-emergence and post-emergence damping-off. The isolated strains produced different forms of infection cushions that ensure the pathogenicity of these strains. SDS-PAGE of the 12 R. solani isolates showed that although the R. solani isolates were isolated from very divergent host plants, the total soluble protein patterns among them were similar. Isozyme analysis revealed higher polymorphism among R. solani isolates using …

The Effect Of Seed Mass On Germination, Seedling Survival And Growth In Prunus Jenkinsii Hook.F. & Thoms., Krishna Upadhaya, Harendra Nath Pandey, Pynsakhiat Law
Turkish Journal of Botany
The effect of seed mass on germination, seedling survival and growth was investigated in Prunus jenkinsii Hook.f. & Thoms. (Rosaceae), an evergreen tree species. Seed mass varied from a minimum of 0.5 g to a maximum of 2.72 g. Seed mass had a significant effect on the percentage of seeds that germinated: 28%, 41% and 42%, respectively, of light- (1.5 g), intermediate- (> 1.5 to 2 g) and heavy-weight (> 2 g) seeds germinated. After 1 year of germination, the seedlings that arose from heavy-, intermediate- and light-weight seeds showed 80%, 63% and 42% survival, respectively. Seedling vigour, expressed in …

Phytoplankton composition of this lake was dominated by Chlorophyta, accounting for about 58.6% of the species richness. Phytoplankton composition in Lake Abant included many new reported (> 30) taxa for the algal flora of Turkey.
Effects Of Salinity: Calcium Interaction On Growth And Nucleic Acid Metabolism In Five Species Of Chenopodiaceae, Essam E. M. Abo-Kassem
Effects Of Salinity: Calcium Interaction On Growth And Nucleic Acid Metabolism In Five Species Of Chenopodiaceae, Essam E. M. Abo-Kassem
Turkish Journal of Botany
Seed germination, seedling growth, and some enzyme activity of nucleic acid metabolism were studied in 5 members of Chenopodiaceae [Beta vulgaris L., Chenopodium quinoa Willd., Spinacea oleracea L., Allenrolfia occidentalis (S.Watson) Kuntze, Atriplex hortensis L.] under NaCl salinity alone or combined with 0.5 mM CaSO_4. High salinity delayed radical emergence and decreased germination percentage in all plants. Combined CaSO_4 reduced inhibition of seed germination in B. vulgaris, S. oleracea, and A. hortensis, but increased it in C. quinoa and A. occidentalis. CaSO_4 reduced plant growth to a greater degree than high salinity did. High salinity decreased total nucleic acid content …

Antioxidative Potentials As A Protective Mechanism In Catharanthus Roseus (L.) G.Don. Plants Under Salinity Stress, Cheruth Abdul Jaleel, Ragupathi Gopi, Paramasivam Manivannan, Rajaram Panneerselvam
Turkish Journal of Botany
Antioxidant responses were analysed in Catharanthus roseus (L.) G.Don. under 0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl in order to investigate the plant´s protective mechanisms against long-term salt-induced oxidative stress. The NaCl treatments were repeated in 4 different stages of growth, i.e. 30, 45, 60 and 75 days after sowing (DAS). The plants were uprooted randomly 90 DAS and the non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidant potentials were analysed. High salinity caused a decrease in reduced glutathione (GSH) and an enhancement in total ascorbate (AA) content and the antioxidant enzyme and ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11) activities. Moreover, salinity induced a significant decline …

Determination Of Phytogenetic Relationships Among Isoetes Species Using Random Primers, Yogendra K. Tripathi, Priyatansh Gurha, D. Ghosh, R. V. Kumar, Ved Prakash
Turkish Journal of Botany
Isoetes L. is an ancient, primitive genus of lycopsids. The genus occupies a unique position in plant evolution as the closest relatives of tree lycopods. The morphological characters, namely leaf size, comb, and sporophyll size, are used diagnostically to help in the identification of the Isoetes species. Thus, species identification of Isoetes is always problematic and the knowledge on the genetic relationship of Isoetes species is also limited. Therefore, in order to find a suitable method for species identification and estimation of genetic relationship among different species of Isoetes, a Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique based on Polymerase Chain …
