Studies On The Levels Of Acetylcholine In The Brains Of Thiamine-Deprived And Thiamine-Antagonized Rats, Darwin Leroy Cheney May 1968

Studies On The Levels Of Acetylcholine In The Brains Of Thiamine-Deprived And Thiamine-Antagonized Rats, Darwin Leroy Cheney

Theses and Dissertations

Thiamine deficiency has been reported to cause nerve degeneration in the peripheral nervous system and hemorrhage with associated cellular damage in the central nervous system (Prickett, 1934). Koedam (1958) observed convulsions in thiamine-deficient pigeons, but convulsions have only rarely been seen in rats (Gubler, 1961). Rats treated with the thiamine antagonist, pyrithiamine (PTh)* always develop ataxia and convulsions but these neurological symptoms have never been reported in those treated with oxythiamine (OTh), another thiamine antagonist (Gubler, 1961). Hosein, Chabrol, and Freedman (1966) concluded that neurological symptoms occur only when the brain thiamine content is diminished to 2.5%o r less of …

Distribution Of The Major Plant Communities In Utah, Robert Howard Foster May 1968

Distribution Of The Major Plant Communities In Utah, Robert Howard Foster

Theses and Dissertations

Utah is a state containing a complexity of landforms in a unique continental setting which results in a variety of climatic and edaphic conditions. The variety, however, is not expressed on a latitudinal plane from north to south but is primarily altitudinal, changing from the playa or valley floors to the mountain tops. The associated arrangement of vegetation, consequently, is usually according to elevation, the elevation generally regulation precipitation and thus edaphic conditions. Slope exposure and position of landforms relative to storm-tracks are modifiers, and prevent fixed posisions for many vegetation types. Vegetation in Utah is as variable as are …

An Electrophoretic And Chromatographic Study Of The Hemoglobin From Adult And Fetal Pigs, Donald William Green

Theses and Dissertations

Hemoglobin, from the erythrocytes of adult and fetal pigs, was isolated and analyzed by carboxymethylcellulose column chromatography and electrophoresis on polyacetate. These techniques demonstrate the existence of four fetal components (F0, F1A, F1B, F1C) and two adult components (A0, A1) based on their elution pH values and electrophoretic mobilities. The shift from-fetal to adult forms is initiated sometime between eight weeks after birth and one year. The change is not completed until sometime after one year and the major fetal forms (F0, F1A) maintain a 15% level in a mature adult. This report is in contrast with the results of …
