Theses and Dissertations

The widespread application and disposal of plastics, such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), have raised significant environmental health concerns. Because of each plastic’s stability and durability, these plastics exhibit limited natural degradation in the environment. Recently, the environmentally friendly biodegradation of plastics by living microorganisms has attracted more attention, as they can assist in the natural degradation process. In this study, the bacterial strain Bacillus subtilis ATCC6051 was used to degrade LDPE and PET for 60 days. To measure the degradation of low-density (LDPE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the dry weight was taken, and physical characteristics were …

Probing Prebiotic Rna Oligonucleotide Polymerization On A Mg-Fes Catalyst Using Microfluidics, Gabriella Garza Dec 2025

Probing Prebiotic Rna Oligonucleotide Polymerization On A Mg-Fes Catalyst Using Microfluidics, Gabriella Garza

Theses and Dissertations

Non-enzymatic polymerization under aqueous conditions has long been viewed as unfavorable, due to product (H2O) inhibition in abiotic settings (Damer & Deamer, 2015); despite its efficiency in biology through ATP monomer activation. Geochemically sustained pH gradients may provide free energy for condensation of organic monomers (Martin & Russell, 2003). Here, we investigated a biologically analogous non-enzymatic mechanism for RNA oligomerization, by probing the catalytic properties of a Mg-rich FeS mineral under aqueous conditions. FeS minerals promote a diverse prebiotic reaction (Wächtershäuser, 1988) and would have precipitated at Hadean submarine hydrothermal systems (Sojo et al., 2016). Natural pH and redox gradients …

Testing Microscopic Approaches For Cementochronology In The 21st Century Identified Skeletal Collection, Portugal, Amando Luis Montalvo Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Age-at-death estimation is a key component to the creation of a biological profile in forensic anthropology. Acellular extrinsic fiber cementum annulations have been shown to correlate with chronological age. Cementochronology examines this correlation through the sum of the alternating translucent bands and opaque annuli, and the age of eruption of a tooth. While several microscopy techniques have been used, there is no consensus on the most optimal. This study will assess the reliability, precision and accuracy of three microscopy techniques: Brightfield (BF), Phase Contrast (PC) and Differential Interference Contrast (DIC). PC was the most reliable (rTEM= 10.4%), the most precise …

The Unilateral Neuromuscular Effects Of Cross Education Eccentric-Focused Isokinetic Strength Training With Blood Flow Restriction In Sedentary And Recreationally Active Males, Bryan Mixumi

Theses and Dissertations

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if BFR unilateral training protocols can elicit the same or greater cross-education effect as observed with HIGH protocols.

RESULTS: Significant time main effects and trained vs. untrained interactions revealed both training groups improved in isometric and isokinetic strength, work and power across limbs (P < 0.05). EMG analyses showed significant increases in vastus lateralis activation, with limb-specific neural adaptations but no group differences (P < 0.05) suggesting potential cross-education influence in the lower musculature.

CONCLUSION: With lower workloads, the BFR training protocols produced improvements in isometrics and isokinetic strength, work, power, and EMG that were comparable to those of the HIGH group across the trained and untrained limbs. The magnitude and limb-specific patterns varied across isometric, isokinetic, and EMG variables, but …
