The speedbump mutant has been identified as an early arrest mutant, becoming apparent as soon as 80% epiboly (8.5 hours of development). This mutant has a mutation in wee1, which is a protein regulating entry into mitosis ensuring the completion of DNA replication before mitosis. The lack of this protein in speedbump allows for early entry into mitosis resulting in damage to the chromosome. Here, we investigate two questions: if mitosis in the speedbump mutant phenotype is more frequent than wild-type phenotype, and, if so, is there a phase in which the mutant phenotype favors. MicroRNAs are a heterogeneous group of small regulatory RNAs generated by many pathways. Mirtrons (miR) are a class of microRNAs produced by splicing, and some mirtrons contain a 3’ tail located downstream from the self-complementary hairpin. During RNA splicing, a loop-like “lariat” intermediate structure is created when the 5’ end of the RNA is attached to an adenine called the branch point. The goal of this project is to uncover the contribution of branch point location to the processing of tailed mirtrons into functional gene regulators. Ticks play an important ecological role as well as a growing role in human health and veterinary care. Ticks are hosts to a plethora of microbial pathogens that can be transferred during feeding to cause tick-borne diseases in humans and many animals. Ticks may in large part owe the success of the transfer of these pathogens between hosts to their complex saliva. The saliva secreted upon a tick’s attachment to a host serves the following, among other, functions: anti-hemostasis of the blood pool, preventing an inflammatory response at the bite site, and serving as a natural anti-microbial substance. Protein residue-residue contact prediction is one of many areas of bioinformatics research that aims to assist researchers in the discovery of structural features of proteins. Predicting the existence of such structural features can provide a starting point for studying the tertiary structures of proteins. The European hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.), is an important temperate zone nut tree species for which there is an expanding demand worldwide. Historically, the Eastern filbert blight disease (EFB), caused by the ascomycete fungus Anisogramma anomala, has prevented commercial hazelnut growing in Tennessee. As part of a UTC hazelnut cultivar trial, EFB resistant hazelnut cultivars and numbered selections from Oregon State University and Burnt Ridge Nursery were planted in 2003 at Smith Farm in Ooltewah, TN. The purpose of my research project has been to determine the nature of the binding relationship between caveolin and hFSHR inside sex cells. FSH plays a role in the maturation of these cells, and interfering with the receptor’s interaction with caveolin would prevent cell maturation (down regulating fertility). It is believed the interaction occurs through transmembrane domain IV of the receptor due to its aromatic nature. The treatment of sex cells with synthetic peptides that mimic the hFSHR-caveolin binding sequence should prevent the interaction, shutting down the signaling cascade from hFSHR. Cortisol acts on target tissues through the glucocorticoid receptor (GR). When in high concentration in the blood, it causes an obesity phenotype with hyperglycemia, hyperglyceridemia, hypertension and weight gain, known as Cushings’ Syndrome or Disease (CS/D). Hypersensitivity-causing single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the GR have been shown to lead to a similar phenotype. Because of the symptomatic resemblance between CS/D and Metabolic Syndrome (MS), we and others hypothesized that the MS may be a Cushingoid-like state with absence of hypercortisolemia, but with GR hypersensitivity. Many animals depend on color signals for communication. It has been hypothesized that signals evolve toward maximum visibility against natural backgrounds. Testing this hypothesis requires a way to assess the influence of signal/background color contrast on signal visibility. Most tests such as these rely on training, which can be very time consuming and difficult for some types of animals. We created a method for testing color contrasts using the lizard Anolis sagrei. Psychological stress is a common part in everyday life that directly affects the body through the nervous system and neuroendocrine hormones. A perceived stressor leads to the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and the synthesis and release of the glucocorticoid hormone cortisol from the adrenal cortex. Studies have linked the release of cortisol during high-stress periods to an increased intake of sugary and fatty foods, consistent with a suspected glucocorticoid-metabolic-brain- negative pathway, with high sugar consumption leading to lower stress and subsequently cortisol levels. The Target Selective Descending Neurons (TSDNs) DIT3 and MDT3 in the Aeshnid dragonfly have been shown to respond best to expanding visual stimuli that appear to be approaching, also called looming stimuli. The ratio between the length of the object (L) and the absolute approach velocity (V) completely determines the time course of angular expansion of the object’s image. This study investigated how these neurons responded to the change in expansion of the stimuli, along with which properties of the looming stimuli (target angle, angular expansion rate, or angular acceleration) excite DIT3 and MDT3, respectively. Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology can provide communication for individuals suffering from degenerative neuromuscular disorders. The present study sought to demonstrate improved BCI performance in healthy individuals using confidence interval training with a P300 BCI spelling program. In this BCI interface, electroencephalographic (EEG) activity was recorded as participants attended to a specific target character within a matrix of flashing letters and numbers presented on a computer screen. The BCI uses the P300 Event Related Potential to select the intended character. All cells regulate their contractility by the interaction of actin and myosin. In non-muscle cells, however, this interaction is regulated by rho, a GTPase, which is the upstream effector for multiple pathways. Cell contractility increases when rho is active, and prior research has shown the depolymerization of microtubules (MTs) activates rho. Microtubules play a role in many cellular functions and it is thought that either associations with MT-associated proteins and/or post-translational modifications to tubulin regulate MT functions. Anolis lizards have excellent color vision and depend on their eyesight to detect visual signals made by other anoles. The dewlap, a colorful and expandable flap of skin, lies beneath the jaw in male anoles and is a primary signaling structure used for territorial and courtship displays. This paper focuses on dewlap color diversity and its evolutionary rudiments. With this in mind, the research team traveled to the Dominican Republic and collected natural habitat light data and dewlap and body color data from the local anoline inhabitants. Dragonflies are known to have highly sophisticated visual processing systems, allowing precise flight control and incredibly accurate prey capture (Olberg et al., 2000). These processes are mediated by a group of neurons known as Target Selective Descending Neurons, or TSDNs. Of the TSDNs, MDT3 and DIT3 are known to respond to objects expanding into the animal’s field of view, otherwise known as looming objects. For centuries, Western explorers, missionaries, and travelers have been bringing home tales of cannibals, which became the earliest documentation of the practice. Modern anthropology, however, has identified a serious concern with such early “documentation” in light of the rise of the ethnographic tradition: the authors of early reports did not consider the contexts in which the events they observed occurred. In this study, the value-added of a new upper-level chemistry course, CHEM 372-Organometallics, was defined using a Student Beliefs Survey that was answered by students in CHEM 372 and by faculty who teach upper-level chemistry courses at Coastal Carolina University. Human Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent and lethal neurodegenerative disease; it involves the accumulation of neurofibrillary tangles, loss of synapses and neurons in specific areas of the brain, and the presence of extracellular amyloid plaques, particularly Amyloid beta-42 (AP-42). In this study, two Drosophila transgenic fly lines carrying either elav-GAL4 driver or UAS-AP-42 transgene, were crossed to generate AD flies that expressed low levels of human Ap-42.
