Growth Of Staphylococcus Aureus On Two Selective Media With Special Reference To Cultural Techniques For Growing S. Aureus On Selenite Egg Yolk Agar, Karren Littell
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
An X-ray diffraction powder photograph shows a series of lines for each of which a measurement can be made and transformed into the interplanar d value (15). Lines were obtained by the analysis of precipitates from BP plates, but no lines could be obtained from the precipitate collected from SeEy plates even when the sample was exposed to the X-rays for a 20-hr period. The lines from the tellurite sample provided d values that corresponded to neither any known tellurium compound nor to elemental tellurium. These results do not agree with those of many investigators (1, 6, 11, 19, 22) …
Some Effects Of L-Thyroxine On Lipid Deposition During Alcohol Administration, John Marcum
Some Effects Of L-Thyroxine On Lipid Deposition During Alcohol Administration, John Marcum
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The experimental procedure described in this thesis consisted of a quanitative lipid analysis, a standard measurement of oxygen consumption, and determinations of fresh liver weight, and total body weight. The lipid analysis involved tissue extraction in a Soxlet apparatus (Rawat and Roy, 1958). The oxygen consumption measurements were made using a small animal respirometer, and fresh liver weights and total body weights were determined with an Ainsworth-Type-I0N analytical balance.
Description And Seasonal Variation In Incidence Of A New Species Of Myxosporidian Parasite (Class Myxosporidea) Of The Bluegill Sunfish, Lepomis Macrochirus Rafineque, In Kentucky, Stephen Bayes Crider
Description And Seasonal Variation In Incidence Of A New Species Of Myxosporidian Parasite (Class Myxosporidea) Of The Bluegill Sunfish, Lepomis Macrochirus Rafineque, In Kentucky, Stephen Bayes Crider
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A new histozoic myxosporidian parasite (Class Mysoxporidea), Myxobolus meglitschi sp. nov., infecting young-of-the-year and yearling bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus Raf., from Shanty Hollow Lake, Warren County, Kentucky was described. Phenology was investigated from January 20 to December, 1969.
The magnitude of infection varied seasonally in bluegill. Incidence was highest in July and August (43.92) in host populations, declining, but not disappearing from September to December 20, 1969. The infection exhibited a yearly mean incidence of 22.318.
The pattern of distribution of cysts on hosts varied seasonally. During periods of low incidence cysts were confined primarily to a postanal area below …

Influence Of Urea On The Fermentation Pattern & Nutritive Value Of Corn Silage, John Shirley
Influence Of Urea On The Fermentation Pattern & Nutritive Value Of Corn Silage, John Shirley
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The effects of chemical additives on the fermentation pattern and subsequent feeding value of corn silage was investigated over a two year period. Corn plants harvested in August 1967 (Experiment I) were ensiled with no additive, 3.50 per cent area, or urea-mineral mix supplying an equal amount of urea. Those harvested in August 1968 (Experiment II) were ensiled with no additive, 0.50 per cent urea, or 0.75 per cent urea. The nutritive value of these silages was evaluated chemically and by lactation trials.
:he addition of urea alone, or in combination with minerals elevated the initial pH and buffered against …

The Effect Of Two Growth Retardant Chemicals, Cycocel And B-Nine, On Certain Nitrogeneous Components In Barley Seedlings, Linda Kinser
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Certain chemicals are known to inhibit growth in many plant species. These chemicals possess a common trait, the ability to inhibit stem elongation by suppressing the activity of the subapical meristematic region (11). These growth retardants have been extensively studied during the past several years in an effort to determine the biochemical mechanism responsible for reduction in plant height. The characteristic effect of these chemical retardants on the growth pattern has been described as producing plants with shorter, thicker stems and broader, darker green leaves. Tolbert, however, noted that although plants treated with the plant growth retardant, Cycocel, (2-chloroethyltrimethlammoniumchloride) and …

A Statistical Study Of Sex Ratio Data From A Sample Of Students At Western Kentucky University, Robert Loyd
A Statistical Study Of Sex Ratio Data From A Sample Of Students At Western Kentucky University, Robert Loyd
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Information on family size, sex ratio, and sex by order of birth was obtained from a sample of students at Western Kentucky University during the 1968-69 school year. Participants were white Americans coming primarily from Central Kentucky.
Data were obtained on the immediate, maternal, and paternal families from 1,018 students. Sex ratios for the immediate and parental generations were 101.2 and 103.3, respectively. The overall sex ratio for the study was 102.7. These ratios did not differ significantly from he reported secondary sex ratio of 106 in the United States.
Correlation coefficients were computed between the sexes of various children …
Effects Of Photoperiod On The Occurrence Of Symbiotic Rotifers, Nematodes And Branchiobdellids Of Two Orconectid Species Of Crayfishes, Edward Van Metre
Effects Of Photoperiod On The Occurrence Of Symbiotic Rotifers, Nematodes And Branchiobdellids Of Two Orconectid Species Of Crayfishes, Edward Van Metre
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Representative specimens of O. immunis and O. pellucidus were brought to the laboratory in order to investigate the influence of light on the occurrence of the symbionts encountered during the preliminary field study. After one week of acclimating the crayfishes they were distributed among environments control chambers that permitted exposure of the hosts and symbionts to 1) continuous light (C.L.), 2) a daily cycle of 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness (12L-12D) and 3) continuous darkness (C.D.).

Regeneration Of The Tentacles And Eyes Of The Marine Snail Ilyanassa Obsoleta Stimpson, W. Ernest Collins Jr.
Regeneration Of The Tentacles And Eyes Of The Marine Snail Ilyanassa Obsoleta Stimpson, W. Ernest Collins Jr.
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The study consisted of two major steps: (1) A macroscopic study was undertaken to determine whether or not the eye and tentacles of a gastropod which exhibits a mosaic development pattern could regenerate. (2) A study was undertaken using histological techniques to determine the detailed step-by-step process of regeneration of the eye and tentacle in Ilyanassa obsoleta.
