Most of the species described in this paper were received for determination through the Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture, and are of economic importance. The figures made to illustrate certain details were all drawn with the aid of the camera lucida. Comparative measurements were made with an eye-piece micrometer used in the Zeiss binocular microscope.

In this paper some new parasites from the United States are described, together with two new species of bees which were found while arranging part of the collections of bees. There are also new species of parasites from Japan, described mostly from a small collection of reared Hymenoptera sent in for determination by Mr. Takeshi Fukai, of Konosu, Saitama, Japan.

In seiner Synopsis of British Hymenoptora, P. I. (Trans. Ent. Soc. 1882, p. 243) zieht er A. spinigera K. als Varietät zu A. Trimmerana K., und in den Hymenoptera Aculeata of the British Islands 1896, p. 237, werden die beiden genannten Formen als Varietäten zu A. Rosae Pz. gestellt. Meines Erachtens dürfen …

I make a new name for our species without hairs on the metanotum, not knowing whether it will include the typical Ageuia or not. The type of Melanaporus Ashm. is a two-celled form of P. argenteus or a close ally.

The aspens, or "popple," as they are often collectively termed, occupy a peculiar position in the forests of North America. Growing up rapidly and in great abundance over areas which have been deforested, usually by fire, they attain only a small size, produce a soft, weak wood, extremely valuable for a limited number of uses, and die at a relatively early age.

In the year 1905, Drainage Investigations were begun in the State of Utah by the Office of Experiment Stations of the United States Department of Agriculture, in co-operation with the Utah Experiment Station. Appropriations have been made by the Utah State Legislature for irrigation and drainage investigations on condition that the United 8tates Department of Agriculture contribute an equal amount, and that the work be conducted jointly by the Federal department and the experiment station of the Agricultural College of Utah.

The extension of the dry-farming area in Utah and the bringing of many thousands of acres of virgin land under wheat cultivation, in large farms, has, in recent years, caused much improvement in the use of farm machinery. One great improvement has been the adoption of the Combined Harvester, which cuts, threshes and sacks the grain in one operation in the field at a minimum of cost. This has been an important factor in the success of the dry-farming movement.

The permanent settlement of Utah was made possible because of the introduction of irrigation methods but the growing of crops without irrigation was successfully practiced soon after the settlement of the territory. From the existing records and from the words of many of the veterans still living it is evident that many attempts were made to grow wheat in the early 50's without irrigation. Most of these attempts failed, because they were made on irrigated lands. In 1865, however, an experiment on a much more extended scale was made.
