Family V. MELLINIDAE. This family (if we can call it a family) is represented in our fauna by one genus with three species, and as these are exceedingly rare, no observations on any of them have been made. Westwood, however, has observed the European Mellinus arvensis burrowing in sand-banks, and Shuckard states the species preys upon Diptera. Kirby and Spence also say it selects the smaller flies, including the troublesome Stomoxys calcitrans.

The species in the genus Pompilus Fabr., judging from the records, seem to have a diversity of habits. According to Westwood, Pompilus niger Fahr. in England provisions its cells with small Lepidopterous larvae; Pompilus fumipennis Zett. with ants, while Pompilus petiolatus preys upon spiders. Now no doubt this diversity of habits will be found correlated by structural differences, which should be used in separating this extensive genus into subgenera. In our fauna, most of our species in this genus, or at least those whose habits are known, feed upon spiders.

The subject of my address is one that has been rarely touched by American entomologists, although offering one of the most attractive and richest fields for research and discovery, as connected with it are many problems of biologic and philosophical importance, which if solved, would throw much light upon many of the moted questions of the day -evolution of species, development of sexes, specialization of organs, transmission of acquired characters, adaptability to environment, etc.

While inspecting during the past summer, the fruit orchard of a friend residing in this neighborhood, my attention was attracted by the peculiar appearance of the leaves of a young plum tree. At the first glance, I thought it might be affected by Aphides, but, on closer examination, I found unmistakable evidence of the work of a leaf-cutting bee, in the circular holes in many of the leaves, and on opening one of the coils of leaves, of which there were four or five, I discovered the curious chambers of the bee, each containing a half grown grub comfortably ensconced, …

It has long been held that irrigation water applied beneath the surface is better than surface irrigation, in relation to the amount used, the temperature of the soil, the amount of evaporation, washing of soil and yield of crop, including quality of crop received. Though philosophically there would seem to be little doubt that the propositions are well taken, sub-irrigation as an economical process has been over-pres ed by some as a mean of very greatly curtailing the amount of water used . There are those who have asserted that only one-tenth of the water applied by sub-irrigation would be …

After three years' trial on the experimental grounds we are ready to acknowledge the conditions unfavorable to the growth of strawberries; the high and dry location of the land, coupled with its sterility, make it unsuitable to the growth of strawberries. The first plants were necessarily, on account of lack of time, planted before the soil was fertilized. Manure was applied freely the second and third seasons, as a top dressing, but the ground, being compacted by frequent irrigation, never has been in the proper condition for strawberries, either as regards fertility or mechanical condition. A new bed has been …

On The Hymenoptera Of Colorado; Descriptions Of New Species, Notes, And A List Of The Species Found In The State, William H. Ashmead

COLORADO, the State of lofty mountains, with its wonderful canons, gorges, and plateaux, a dry climate, and remarkable for its great mineral wealth and fossil remains, from its position in the Rocky Mountains affords a peculiarly interesting Fauna .. In the present memoir, it is intended to elucidate, as far as possible, a part of this, the hymenopterous fauna, describe such species as appear to be unknown to science, give notes, a list of the species occurring in the State, and show as much of their life-histories as is practicable.

The materials upon which this monograph is based are the almost perfect collections of the American Entomological Society, containing the types of Messrs. Cresson and Norton, together with a large number of undescribed forms, and the collection of M. Provancher, of Canada, kindly loaned me for study, containing all his type specimens described in the "Naturaliste Canadien," with other rare and interesting species. Only four species treated of in the following pages are wanting in the material at hand, and furthermore I had the advantage of having Mr. Norton's determinations of many species in his paper now in the Society's …
