Different Warm Up Protocols On Immediate Golf Drive Performance In Recreational Golfers, Emily Travis
Different Warm Up Protocols On Immediate Golf Drive Performance In Recreational Golfers, Emily Travis
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"It has been recommended that golfers perform a warm up routine before playing. Currently, the optimal warm up routine to improve performance of a maximal golf drive is not clear, however, research does recommend active-dynamic stretching as opposed to static stretching during warm up. Currently, there have been no studies conducted using recreational golfers to research functional resistance exercises towards immediate performance of golf. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of three different warm up protocols in recreational golfers on immediate golf performance of a maximal golf drive by measuring maximum club head speed (MCHS), maximal …

"Understanding factors underlying the distribution and abundance of wildlife species remains a central question of wildlife ecology and has become increasingly complex as humans continue to alter landscape conditions. During the past 50 years, elk in eastern Washington have expanded their year-long ranges into lower elevation areas of the Channeled Scablands. The persistence of this population is dependent upon core protected areas with surrounding low human density agriculture or rangeland. Over-reliance on core protected area leads to over-browsing, often resulting in management decisions designed to displace elk out of core areas. Use of human areas exposes elk to increasing land …
Long-Term Characterization Of The Chronic Dopamine Microelectrode And Effect Of Electrical Conditioning, Eric P. Marr
Long-Term Characterization Of The Chronic Dopamine Microelectrode And Effect Of Electrical Conditioning, Eric P. Marr
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Background: Dopamine (DA) is a neurotransmitter involved in movement, reward learning and addiction. Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) has long been an indispensable tool for monitoring real-time DA signaling. Development of polyimide fused silica-encased FSCV microelectrodes have made the technique more suitable for chronic DA monitoring (months) in vivo. Methods: In this study, electrically stimulated DA signals were evoked weekly in an effort to characterize the recovery time and stability of DA signals recorded long-term with silica-encased chronic DA microelectrodes. Additionally, electrical conditioning (etching), previously shown to improve microelectrode sensitivity in vitro, was performed to investigate the long-term impact on DA …
Vegetation Colonization Within Exposed Reservoirs Following Dam Removal On The Elwha River, Washington, Jarrett L. Schuster
Vegetation Colonization Within Exposed Reservoirs Following Dam Removal On The Elwha River, Washington, Jarrett L. Schuster
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"Riparian ecosystems are important for ecological functioning of rivers, and are significantly impacted by dams. With over 50% of large dams in the U.S. beyond their life expectancy, dam removal is increasingly being considered to eliminate aging infrastructure and restore ecosystems. There have been few large dam removals to date, so studies assessing vegetation succession on exposed reservoir sediments are limited. My research aims to assess how environmental factors within exposed reservoirs affect vegetation succession following removal of two dams on the Elwha River, Washington. In addition, I compared patterns of vegetation among the two reservoirs and their landforms. To …

Stream Microbial Communities Along An Agricultural Gradient, Cristine Mcintyre Schucker
Stream Microbial Communities Along An Agricultural Gradient, Cristine Mcintyre Schucker
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"Although sediment microbes play key roles in decomposition and nitrogen (N) cycling, responses of microbial communities to N additions within watersheds is not well understood. Agriculture contributes excess N into stream systems, predominantly as ammonia, which is transformed through nitrification into nitrate by prokaryotes that produce the ammonia monooxygenase enzyme (AMO). The Latah Creek watershed in WA State (USA) drains approximately 1178 km², of which half is agricultural. Because the tributary streams reside in forested, agricultural and mixed use drainages, samples from these stream sediments capture microbial communities at different spatial gradients of land use. My research aimed to answer: …
Acute Effects Of Dynamic Stretching On Flexibility And Agonist-Antagonist Muscle Activity, Lance T. Beisley
Acute Effects Of Dynamic Stretching On Flexibility And Agonist-Antagonist Muscle Activity, Lance T. Beisley
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"Flexibility is an important determinant of health and important in sport performance. ADS and SPST are the methods most often used in training flexibility for sport. Although ADS appears to dominate SPST in measures of power and agility, the mechanisms are unclear. The purpose of this study was to delineate the effects of ADS on AROM and agonist-antagonist mean and peak EMG. The ADS protocol involved three sets of ten repetitions of leg kicks while in the supine position with the pelvis and contralateral limb fixed in extension. Participants moved the leg at the hip in a kicking motion to …
Chapter 1, A Dichotomous Key For The Identification Of Nine Salmonids Of The Inland Northwest Using Six Diagnostic Skull Bones; And Associated Equations To Estimate Total Length And Weight Form Bones Ingested By Piscivores Or Found In Archeological Sites; Chapter 2, Utilization Of Acoustic Biotelemetry To Define The Movements Of Lake Roosevelt Redband Trout, Oncorhynchus Mykiss Gairdneri, Aaron Stroud, Allan T. Scholz

"The fish skull is a complex anatomical structure, comprised of numerous bones that are often unique to the fish's genera or species. These unique qualities allow researchers to use bone to identify and quantify fish in piscivore and archeological investigations. Due to the high degree of similarity among skull bones of salmonids, adequate descriptions for keying out most salmoinds is limited in the available literature. To address this, eight different bones from a sample of 273 fish, representing nine salmonid species, were observed and measured. Observations and measurements were used to construct dichotomous keys and regression models for identifying and …
Smallmouth Bass Abundance And Diet Composition In The Upper Spokane River, Michael Taylor Mccroskey
Smallmouth Bass Abundance And Diet Composition In The Upper Spokane River, Michael Taylor Mccroskey
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"I conducted a three month study, between June and August, in 2015 of Redband Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss var. gairdneri) and Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus dolomieu) in the upper Spokane River in Washington, from the border between Washington and Idaho (rkm 154.5) to Harvard Road (rkm 149.2). The primary goals of the project were to: (1) determine the abundance and density of Redband Trout and Smallmouth Bass in the Starr Road area, as well as two reference sites, prior to possible habitat manipulation, (2) estimate the Smallmouth Bass population and density between the Washington/Idaho Stateline and Harvard Road, and (3) determine the …
