In Situ Carbon Uptake Of Marine Macrophytes Is Highly Variable Among Species, Taxa, And Morphology, Julian Jacobs, Lucian Himes, Florybeth Flores La Valle Dr. Jan 2023

In Situ Carbon Uptake Of Marine Macrophytes Is Highly Variable Among Species, Taxa, And Morphology, Julian Jacobs, Lucian Himes, Florybeth Flores La Valle Dr.

Summer Undergraduate Research in Biology Program

Macroalgae form important coastal ecosystems and are considered to be highly

productive, yet individual macrophyte carbon uptake rates are

poorly documented and methodologies for in situ assessments of productivity

are not well developed. In this study, we employ a 13C enrichment method in

benthic chambers to calculate carbon uptake rates and assess d13C signatures of

a large stock of nearshore benthic macroalgae varying in taxa and morphology in

Southern California. Our objectives are to 1) identify the variability of carbon

uptake and inorganic carbon use among individuals of the same species or

morphology and speculate how macroalgae might respond to …

The Cariaco Basin, located off eastern Venezuela in the southeastern Caribbean Sea, is the world's largest marine anoxic basin and the site of one of the longest-running oceanographic studies on record. The CARIACO Ocean Time-Series Program collected various oceanographic parameters from 1995 until 2017 at the Cariaco station (10.50° N, 64.67° W). The Cariaco Basin exhibits pronounced seasonal and interannual variations in hydrographic properties and primary production due to seasonal coastal upwelling. Additionally, due to its restricted circulation and high primary production, the basin is anoxic below approximately 250 meters.

Monthly oceanographic cruises were conducted aboard the R/V Hermano Ginés …

Dataset For Controllable Factors Affecting Accuracy And Precision Of Human Identification Of Animals From Drone Imagery, Landon R. Jones, Jared A. Elmore, B. S. Krishnan, Sathishkumar Samiappan, Kristine O. Evans, Morgan B. Pfeiffer, Bradley F. Blackwell, Raymond B. Iglay

CFR Publications

Dataset from the results of an experiment to determine how three controllable factors, flight altitude, camera angle, and time of day, affect human identification and counts of animals from drone images to inform best practices to survey animal communities with drones. We used a drone (unoccupied aircraft system, or UAS) to survey known numbers of eight animal decoy species, representing a range of body sizes and colors, at four GSD (ground sampling distance) values (0.35, 0.70, 1.06, 1.41 cm/pixel) representing equivalent flight altitudes (15.2, 30.5, 45.7, 61.0 m) at two camera angles (45° and 90°) and across a range of …

Wetland Walk Vr: Field Ecology In Northeast Florida, Kailan Sindelar

UNF Faculty Research and Scholarship

Join Field Ecologists of the University of North Florida as they begin to monitor the water in swamps and marshes. In this virtual reality experience you will walk through places that are normally too dangerous or harmful to visit, learning about life in these places, how we study it, and how you may connect to it.

We measured total Selenium in plants from July through November of 2012 and in water, macroinvertebrates, plants, and sediments from July of 2014 from Pariette Wetlands, Utah, U.S.A. to test for spatial, temporal, plant species and plant tissue distribution of Selenium.

Thermal Tolerance And Physiology Of Eleutherodactylus Coqui Along An Elevational Gradient In Hawai‘I, Karen H. Beard, Susannah S. French, Jack Marchetti Dec 2022

Thermal Tolerance And Physiology Of Eleutherodactylus Coqui Along An Elevational Gradient In Hawai‘I, Karen H. Beard, Susannah S. French, Jack Marchetti

Browse all Datasets

The purpose of this study was to determine if the thermal tolerance and physiology of the coqui frog changed along HawaiÔiÕs elevation gradient. A short acclimation experiment was used to test the baseline thermal tolerance and physiology, and an extended acclimation experiment to test the acclimation ability of the thermal tolerance and physiology metrics of the coqui frogs collected from low (m), medium (350-550 m) and high elevations (>750 m).

Elevation Influences The Microhabitat Use And Baseline Physiology Of Coqui Frogs In Hawai‘I, Karen H. Beard, Susannah S. French, Jack Marchetti

Browse all Datasets

The purpose of this study was to determine whether elevation in HawaiÔi affects the coquiÕs microhabitat use such as substrate choice and height off the forest floor and physiological metrics such as osmolality, oxidative status, and energy metabolites (glucose, free glycerol, and triglycerides).

Description Of The Immature Stages Of Dacus Bivittatus (Diptera: Tephritidae), The Greater Pumpkin Fruit Fly, Gary J. Steck, Shepard Ndlela, Louis A. Somma, Jessica Diaz, Matthew R. Moore, Jessica Awad Dec 2022

Description Of The Immature Stages Of Dacus Bivittatus (Diptera: Tephritidae), The Greater Pumpkin Fruit Fly, Gary J. Steck, Shepard Ndlela, Louis A. Somma, Jessica Diaz, Matthew R. Moore, Jessica Awad

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

We describe the egg, three instars, and pupa of Dacus bivittatus Bigot using optical and scanning electron microscopy and compare them with those of other Dacus Fabricius species for which these stages have been described as well as those of two important pest species of Zeugodacus Hendel that infest cucurbits. A new anatomical term, lateral lips, is introduced to describe a feature of the facial mask. A feature of the egg that has not been reported previously for Tephritidae is described here: a peculiar arrangement of aeropyles in an irregular line partially encircling the egg near the posterior end. A …
