Attraction Of The Stem Borer Chilo Partellus (Swinhoe) Larvae (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) By Certain Coloured Surfaces For Trapping, Kailash Narain Saxena, Jeremiah Dickens Onyango Jan 1987

Attraction Of The Stem Borer Chilo Partellus (Swinhoe) Larvae (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) By Certain Coloured Surfaces For Trapping, Kailash Narain Saxena, Jeremiah Dickens Onyango

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Different colour papers have been shown to attract the first and third instar larvae of Chilo partellus in different degrees. Green bice (No. 329) and light green (No. 323) elicited maximum larval attraction; followed by foliage green (No. 328) and cadmium yellow (No. 307). The green bice paper has been found to be much more effective than foliage green or cadmium yellow paper as a cylindrical sticky trap for the larvae. Even when competing with the host plant, sorghum, these colour paper traps proved more effective than the plants for attracting and trapping the larvae. © 1987, JAPANESE SOCIETY OF …

Policy Structures And Crop Productivity In Third World Countries, Zerubabel M. Nyiira Jan 1987

Policy Structures And Crop Productivity In Third World Countries, Zerubabel M. Nyiira

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Deciding what should be done in the crop-production sector is a policy issue and a public and management responsibility. Entrusted with that responsibility, governments formulate policies which should ensure maximum crop productivity. The impact of policies and policy structures on crop productivity, and the role of policy makers, administrators and scientists in research and development systems are the subjects of this paper. Observations are made on the role played by government policies in the generation, diffusion and application of crop-production technology and a brief discussion is presented of issues of public and international policies and crop productivity. © 1987.

Cutaneous Responses Of Cattle To Extracts From Rhipicephalus Appendiculatus Larvae, M. G. Binta, M. P. Cunningham Jan 1984

Cutaneous Responses Of Cattle To Extracts From Rhipicephalus Appendiculatus Larvae, M. G. Binta, M. P. Cunningham

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

A component of an extract from Rhipicephalus appendiculatus larval ticks induced an immediate hypersensitivity reaction in sensitized cattle when intra-dermally inoculated. Generally, the magnitude of the cutaneous reaction depended upon the duration of exposure of the cattle to tick infestation. The skin reaction was absent in steers not previously fed on by ticks. Field trials, using the extract in the Narok District of Kenya (Masailand), showed that the skin swelling thus induced was biggest in adult cattle and those over 9 months, moderate in the 6-month age-group and barely palpable in the less-than-1-month age-group. © 1984.

Dispermic Origin And Clinical Outcome Of Three Complete Hydatidiform Moles With 46,Xy Karyotype, U. Surti, A. E. Szulman, S. O'Brien Sep 1982

Dispermic Origin And Clinical Outcome Of Three Complete Hydatidiform Moles With 46,Xy Karyotype, U. Surti, A. E. Szulman, S. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

Three new cases of complete, classic hydatidiform mole with a 46,XY karyotype are described. They originated by dispermy as demonstrated by chromosome and enzyme analyses. Levels of human chorionic gonadotropin decreased to normal spontaneously within a short time, indicating a benign course in these three cases. Of a total of 18 cases reported to date, postoperative clinical information was available for 10 patients. Two of these 10 patients had a malignant course with lung metastases. It is of theoretical and clinical importance to establish the magnitude of the risk of malignancy for hydatidiform mole with a 46,XY karyotype. © 1982.

Trail-Following In Termites: Evidence For A Multicomponent System, M. Kaib, O. Bruinsma, R. H. Leuthold Sep 1982

Trail-Following In Termites: Evidence For A Multicomponent System, M. Kaib, O. Bruinsma, R. H. Leuthold

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Several African termite species from different subfamilies and different habitats are sensitive to trail-active extracts or to naturally laid trails from other species. Using single-extract bioassays, it is shown that the response threshold for trail-following is nearly identical for all tested species (except for Hodotermes mossambicus). However, when termite workers have a choice between trails from their own species and from other species, conspecific trail-following is exclusively observed. This phenomenon can be counteracted by dilution (1:10) of the conspecific trail-pheromone extract. Tests of the trail activity of various synthetic alcohols show that among these, the highest sensitivity of termite workers …

Influence Of The Termite Macrotermes Michaelseni (Sjöst) On Soil Fertility And Vegetation In A Semi-Arid Savannah Ecosystem, M. A. Arshad Jan 1982

Influence Of The Termite Macrotermes Michaelseni (Sjöst) On Soil Fertility And Vegetation In A Semi-Arid Savannah Ecosystem, M. A. Arshad

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The growth and species structure of vegetation in relation to the proximity of termite (M. michaelseni) mounds was studied in a semi-arid savannah ecosystem during 1978-1980. The dry matter yield in the termite-modified area at 1-10 m distance from mounds was significantly greater (P < 0.01) than that in the area beyond 22 m which is relatively unaffected by the termites. Themeda triandra and Digitaria scalarum, dominant grass species of the area, were totally absent in the 1-10 m zone around the mound. The major species in the immediate vicinity of the mound were Pennisetum stramineum and Cynodon dactylon, the latter was a dominant species (over 90%) within the 0-10 m zone and entirely absent beyond 15 m from the mound. The number of grass species increased from 2-3 species around the mound to 6-7 species in the area apparently beyond the influence of the mound. High concentration of nutrients and favourable water availability, together with good drainage, appeared to be the major causes of increased biomass and different species composition of vegetation around the mound. © 1982.

Precocene-Induced Sterility In F1 Generation Of Glossina Morsitans Morsitans, M. Samaranayaka-Ramasamy, M. F.B. Chaudhury Jan 1982

Precocene-Induced Sterility In F1 Generation Of Glossina Morsitans Morsitans, M. Samaranayaka-Ramasamy, M. F.B. Chaudhury

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Precocene treatment does not disrupt the events of reproduction in Glossina morsitans morsitans or induce any apparent changes in treated tsetse. However, some females of the F1 generation are either sterile or show retardations in follicle development. Sterility is not reversed spontaneously or with juvenile hormone analogues. The critical period for precocene action is related to each ovulation. The corpora allata of precocene-treated tsetse are normal, but those of F1 sterile females are degenerate. The occurrence of retardation has enabled the characterisation of stages in follicle development in G. m. morsitans. © 1982.

The Influence Of Salinity On Larval Development And Population Dynamics Of Anopheles Merus Dönitz (Diptera: Culicidae), F. W. Mosha, C. M. Mutero Jan 1982

The Influence Of Salinity On Larval Development And Population Dynamics Of Anopheles Merus Dönitz (Diptera: Culicidae), F. W. Mosha, C. M. Mutero

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Variations in density of adults of Anopheles merus Dön. in Jimbo Village on the Kenya Coast were found to be correlated both with rainfall and with salinity at their breeding sites. Densities started to increase at the beginning of the rains when several breeding sites were formed. This was followed by a decline in numbers resulting mainly from the decrease in salinity in the semi-permanent breeding sites. A second rise occurred after the end of the rains, corresponding with an increase in salinity in the semi-permanent breeding sites due to evaporation. Peak density coincided with salinities of 30–50% sea water …

Aggregation Behavior Of Aplomyiopsis Xylota (Diptera: Tachinidae), Frank J. Messina Sep 1981

Aggregation Behavior Of Aplomyiopsis Xylota (Diptera: Tachinidae), Frank J. Messina

Biology Faculty Publications

The tachinid A. xylota is a common parasitoid of larvae of Trirhabda virgata and T. borealis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in central New York [USA]. Flies aggregated on herbaceous vegetation along the borders between old fields and more shaded habitats (shrubby fields or woodlots). Aggregations comprised from less than 100 to a few thousand individuals, almost all of which were male. Males continuously perched and moved about in sun flecks on the vegetation and frequently grappled with each other. In the old field adjacent to the primary aggregation site, the tachinid sex ratio was strongly skewed toward females. Aggregations of A. xylota …

Deterrence Of Repeated Oviposition In Sorghum Shootfly Atherigona Soccata, Ashok K. Raina Sep 1981

Deterrence Of Repeated Oviposition In Sorghum Shootfly Atherigona Soccata, Ashok K. Raina

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The sorghum shootfly, Atherigona soccata, under low population density conditions lays one egg per sorghum plant. Possible regulatory mechanisms of this oviposition behavior are reported. The presence of an egg thoroughly washed and reattached to a leaf does not deter further oviposition, indicating the absence of visual cues. When washings from eggs were sprayed on sorghum plants, or when plants from which eggs had been removed were presented to a gravid female, significant deterrence was observed. Apparently a deterrent pheromone is associated with the water-soluble glue with which the females attach their eggs to the leaves. Some deterrent effect persists …

Ramasamy R., Jamnadas H. & Mutinga M.J. 1981. Proteins and surface proteins of Leishmania promastigotes and their possible relevance to the characterisation of strains. International Journal for Parasitology 11: 387-390. Two strains of Leishmania isolated from phlebotomine flies and another one from a patient with kala-azar were grown in culture as promastigotes. They were analysed for protein composition and surface proteins by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis after surface radiolabelling. Differences were observed in the characteristic patterns of proteins and surface proteins between the two strains that are likely to be Leishmania donovani and the other strain. Such differences may prove valuable …

Mirid Fauna Associated With Old-Field Goldenrods (Solidago: Compositae) In Ithaca, N.Y., Frank J. Messina

Biology Faculty Publications

The mirid fauna associated with oldfield goldenrods (Solidago spp.) was sampled from May 10-Oct. 25, 1977 in Ithaca, New York USA . Species (23) belonging to 16 genera were recorded; 97% of all individuals (1099) belong to 6 genera (Lygus, Slaterocoris, Lopidea, Plagiognathus, Adelphocoris and Polymerus). The tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris, was the most common species. The dominant mirids can be divided into 2 fairly distinct guilds, L. lineolaris, 2 Plagiognathus spp. and A. rapidus feeding primarily on goldenrod flowers and 3 Slaterocoris spp., Lopidea media and Polymerus venaticus feeding on the immature foliage. The phenological pattern exhibited by …

The Food Habits And Feeding Behavior Of New World Coral Snakes, Harry Walter Greene May 1973

The Food Habits And Feeding Behavior Of New World Coral Snakes, Harry Walter Greene

Biology Theses - Archive

This thesis considers the food habits and feeding behavior of New World venomous coral snakes, with emphasis on Micrurus fulvius a species that is found in the southeastern United States and northern Mexico. Literature records and the stomach contents of preserved specimens demonstrate that M. fuIvius of all sizes are specialized tertiary consumers. In Texas, they feed mostly on several species of small, secretive colubrid snakes and on skinks of the genera Eumeces and Leiolopisma. Other kinds of lizards and the young of large colubrid and viperid snakes make up the remainder of their prey. Geographic and seasonal variations in …
