Domestic Violence In The World Of Athletics, Abbigayle L. Gesler
Domestic Violence In The World Of Athletics, Abbigayle L. Gesler
ONU Student Research Colloquium
There is an ongoing debate whether athletics is linked to domestic violence in professional athletes or individuals who were athletes for a long period of time. The purpose of this research is to see if being an athlete leads to domestic violence, and if so, to find ways to decrease the numbers. Professional athletes with a history of domestic violence will be researched and this could help determine if there is a link between the two. To get an idea on aggression levels in athletes, the Buss & Perry Survey was sent out via email to all Ohio Northern students, …
Lichen Delimitation Within The Collemataceae Family, Catherine Austin
Lichen Delimitation Within The Collemataceae Family, Catherine Austin
Undergraduate Research Competition
Lichens are composed of fungal and algal or cyanobacterial components that participate in a mutualistic relationship. Recently, lichen-associated bacterial microbiomes have also been discovered to play a role in this relationship. Gathering information concerning lichen evolutionary relationships can bring more clarity to how lichens have evolved to be better equipped to house these bacterial communities. Specifically, this study aims to understand the evolutionary relationship between lichen species within different genera of the Collemataceae family. Broadening the taxa being studied from the Kosuthova et al. 2020 study to 20 total lichen species within the Collemataceae family, allows for a phylogenetic approach …
Use Of Ultrasounds And Cystotomies In Diagnosing And Resolving Bladder Stones, Kirsten Cline
Use Of Ultrasounds And Cystotomies In Diagnosing And Resolving Bladder Stones, Kirsten Cline
Biology Presentations
The use of ultrasounds are the most safe and effective way to detect bladder stones. Bladder stones are easy to detect with acoustic shadowing, a white bright twinkle effect, and heaviness. Cystotomies are one of the most common procedures to solve bladder stones with one of the lowest mortality and morbidity rates. Kiara, a one year old feline presented with UTI symptoms and was diagnosed with bladder stones. An ultrasound was used and a cystotomy was performed.

Investigating The Effect Of The Wee-1.3 And Pam-1 Mutations On Meiosis After The Fertilization Of Oocytes In C. Elegans, Sophie Lear, Alex Bender
Biology Presentations
Currently, we are working with two genes: pam-1, which functions in the asymmetric division in meiosis and corresponding polarity, and wee-1.3, which functions in oocyte maturation. The mutation pam-1 is known to disturb embryo viability and reduces the hatch rate to 2% in the worms. However, a rescue mutation, wee-1.3, is known to bring the hatch rate up to 42% because polarity and asymmetry defects are suppressed. From previous research we know that during meiosis, the pam-1 mutation results in meiotic exit delays and other mutant phenotypes such as failure of meiosis II. Currently, we are imaging …
Research Proposal: Clarifying Any Interactions Between Cytoskeletal Proteins And The Aminopeptidase Pam-1, Alexis Ayala
Research Proposal: Clarifying Any Interactions Between Cytoskeletal Proteins And The Aminopeptidase Pam-1, Alexis Ayala
Biology Presentations
Caenorhabditis elegans is a transparent roundworm that functions as an ideal model organism for studying the complex processes that occur during embryonic cell division. The cell division process is comprised of distinct phases that ensure the development of a healthy and robust embryo. The cytokinesis phase is characterized by the formation of a contractile ring near the middle of the embryo. When this contractile ring constricts, the embryo can effectively divide into two cells. Recent work in the Lyczak laboratory has focused on better understanding how the aminopeptidase PAM-1 works in conjunction with cytoskeletal proteins to regulate the actomyosin cytoskeleton. …

Exploration Of The Food Forest Outreach Team, Victoria Bearden
Environment and Sustainability Presentations
At Whittaker Environmental Research Station, the first iteration of the Ursinus Food Forest was planted in 2019. The Ursinus Food Forest includes over 15 species of edible species and embraces lessons in urban agriculture, urban forestry, and agroforestry. The site has now been planted for over a year, and is monitored by Dr. Patrick Hurley, student researchers, and Ursinus facilities. There are two separate student research teams involved with the food forest, one focusing on stewardship of the site and the other focusing on outreach for the site. The goal of the outreach team is to build a community around …
Impact Analysis On The Invasive Oriental Weather Loach (Misgurnus Anguillicaudatus) In The Grant Creek And Prairie Creek Watersheds At Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, Adam Vanhaitsma
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Presentation Location: Weber Center, Room 101
Abstract
In 2014, the invasive Oriental weather loach was found in the Prairie Creek wetland at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. While little is known about the Oriental weather loach and its impact on freshwater ecosystems it has become a widespread invasive species. Being the first to investigate the impact of the Oriental weather loach on the Grant Creek and Prairie Creek watersheds at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, we set traps for specimens from early June till late July in both watersheds. Each loach that was caught was euthanized and dissected in order to understand …

Surveys Of Bees At Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie With Special Focus On The Possible Presence Of A Rusty Patched Bumble Bee Populations, Nicole Dede
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Native bees are one of the most diverse and important groups of pollinators in many ecosystems. However, pollinators are declining around the world and bumble bees (Bombus sp.) have been significantly affected. Prairie grasslands like those at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie (Wilmington, IL) are likely prime locations for many species of bees due to rich and consistent floral resources. An important example is the rusty patched bumble bee, B. affinis, which was found at Midewin in 2018. B. affinis is federally listed as a critically endangered species that has experienced a 90% range reduction since 2000. This study is meant …

Changes To The Elevational Distribution Of Craugastor Podiciferus In A Costa Rican Cloud Forest, Tanner Senti, Dakotah Henn, Derek W. Rosenberger
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Presentation Location: Warming House, Olivet Nazarene University
Abstract
While a warming climate is responsible for many animal ranges shifting to higher latitudes and elevations, species will be affected in different ways. High elevation species in the tropics are particularly at risk due to shrinking habitat on mountain tops. Craugastor podiciferus is a cryptic species of flesh-bellied frog native to the Talamanca mountain ranges of Costa Rica and Panama. These frogs inhabit montane cloud forests at an elevational range of 1,090 - 2650 meters. However, they are poorly understood and little is known about the natural history of this species. …
