Ecological Study Of The Weed Population Of Eastern Nebraska, Elva L. Norris Jan 1939

Ecological Study Of The Weed Population Of Eastern Nebraska, Elva L. Norris

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

EXACT knowledge of the relations existing between weeds and cultivated crops is very limited. This is true also of the amount of viable weed seed present in arable soil. Impressions and observations have been recorded, but very few quantitative investigations have been made. The numerous circulars and bulletins about weeds, issued by many experiment stations, deal mostly with descriptions of species and methods of weed control. The present research was undertaken primarily to determine the relationship which exists between weeds and cultivated crops, but also to obtain an estimation of the number of viable weed seeds present in the soil. …

A Preliminary Study Of The Vegetative Cover In Spanish Fork Canyon, Utah, Ben S. Markham Jan 1939

A Preliminary Study Of The Vegetative Cover In Spanish Fork Canyon, Utah, Ben S. Markham

Theses and Dissertations

Spanish Fork Canyon is located in central Utah and is part of the Wasatch Mountain range. Since the coming of the white man to this section of country it has been used as a trail. The canyon provides summer range for stock as well as a watershed. Plant densities were determined by the point observation method using series of one-hundred square foot plots. Three areas which have been subject to different grazing uses were studied. The association changes in the canyon are the replacement of sage by slender wheatgrass on the shallow soils and the disclimax condition resulting from over-grazing …

A Zygotic Lethal In Chromosome 1 Of Maize And Its Linkage With Neighboring Genes, R. A. Emerson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

A Bolivian maize

maize with mosaic red pericarp and cob, here designated by the symbol M-M, crossed with a local inbred strain of maize having white pericarp and cob, W-W, produced in F1 21 M-M and 28

W-W plants, not far from the I : I relation expected on the assumption that

the M-M parent was heterozygous for pericarp and cob color, M-M/W-W.

In F2 and segregating F3 cultures, however, there were 130 M-M and 64

W-W plants obviously a 2 : I instead of the 3 : I relation expected. Later cultures

Common Native Grasses Of Nebraska, A. L. Frolik, F. D. Keim Dec 1938

Common Native Grasses Of Nebraska, A. L. Frolik, F. D. Keim

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Twenty-four native grasses that are the most important and most generally distributed in Nebraska are described and illustrated in this circular. Information concerning their distribution and economic value is given. Anyone interested in learning to identify the common native grasses should be able to do so by comparing plant specimens with the illustrations and descriptions herein presented. The work of identifying grasses may seem technical and limited only to botanists or those with similar training. Nearly anyone, however, can learn to identify many of the native grasses if willing to spend a little time and effort.

UAES Bulletins

Project 179 of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station - "A Study of the Agricultural Resources of Utah and their Utilization" - was set up in April 1936 us a state-wide project. The object of this project was to measure by areas the basic agricultural resources of the state and to translate the information collected into a program of more efficient use. The more specific objectives were: (1) classification of agricultural lands of Utah according to present and potential productivity and use; (2) determination of the net productive area of agricultural lands and water supply now available, or which may be …

Bulletin No. 282 - Pioneering In Western Agriculture

UAES Bulletins

A resume of the First Half-Century of Research 1888 - 1938 at the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station including the Biennial Report 1936 - 1938.

The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station in reaching the fiftieth year of its history can look back upon a brilliant record of achievement covering the practical as well as the more fundamental problems of agriculture in this arid state. The difficulties encountered in conquering deserts down through human history have demonstrated the mastery of man's spirit over his physical environment. Man's destiny to multiply, subdue, and replenish the earth cannot be accomplished by enjoying the fruits of …

Bulletin No. 280 - Sinusitis Of Turkeys And Its Treatment, D. E. Madsen

UAES Bulletins

Sinusitis has long been recognized as one of the barriers to profitable production of chicken products; and with the growth of commercial turkey production in the west its existence in this bird has become increasingly significant. In Utah areas considerable loss is encountered yearly from this disease in turkeys. This loss has prompted some investigations as to what measures may be adopted for its control.

Wound Healing In Potatoes (Triumph Variety) As Influenced By Type Of Injury, Nature Of Initial Exposure, And Storage Conditions, H. O. Werner Jul 1938

Wound Healing In Potatoes (Triumph Variety) As Influenced By Type Of Injury, Nature Of Initial Exposure, And Storage Conditions, H. O. Werner

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Tubers of the Triumph variety of potatoes, the one most extensively grown in western Nebraska, are more susceptible than those of other varieties to the various types of injury that occur at harvest time. This greater susceptibility is chiefly the result of long stolons, unusual tenderness of skin, and ease with which the tubers crack. The two latter characteristics have been accentuated by the custom of late planting adopted generally throughout the region in recent years. Many of the difficulties could be avoided by growing another variety. However, as there now seems to be no other variety as well adapted …

Some Coccogoneales Common To The Vicinity Of Milwaukee, Joseph John Valenti Jun 1938

Some Coccogoneales Common To The Vicinity Of Milwaukee, Joseph John Valenti

Bachelors’ Theses

The Cyanophyceae, a group of plants which are commonly known as the Blue-Green Algae, have a characteristic blue-green color due to a green pigment-chlorophyl, with which there is associated a blue pigment, phycocyanin. The Cyanophyceae are found everywhere on fresh salt water, on damp soil, rocks, bark, etc. These are among the simplest and lowest of all green plants. The plant consists of a single cell, but in most species these cells tend to adhere in colonies. These algae are able to grow at a higher temperature than can any other algae.

A Proposed Method For Classifying And Evaluating Soils On The Basis Of Productivity And Use Suitabilities, Arthur Anderson, A. P. Nelson, F. A. Hayes, I. D. Wood

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

It is the object of this paper to present a method for classifying and evaluating the soils as mapped in regular soil surveys on the basis of land types, which are here defined as areas having reasonably similar productivity and use suitabilities. The standards used to differentiate land types will vary according to the desired objectives, but any material difference in yield, or in practices necessary to maintain a desirable level of productivity will justify recognition of land types. The proposed procedure involves a more detailed study of the influence which soils, slope, erosion, and drainage have on specific crops …

Bulletin No. 279 - The Fruit Tree Situation In Utah, A. L. Wilson, A. L. Stark Apr 1938

Bulletin No. 279 - The Fruit Tree Situation In Utah, A. L. Wilson, A. L. Stark

UAES Bulletins

The fruit industry in Utah is not large when compared with the total production of the United States. The year 1935 was a favorable fruit season for Utah and yet the state produced only 0.54 percent of the United States' apple crop, 1.30 percent of the peach crop, 0.31 percent of the pears, and 3.72 percent of all cherries. Utah does, however, produce between 10 and 15 percent of all sweet cherries. Even though the Utah fruit industry represents such a small part of the national industry, a great many people of the state are dependent upon it, either wholly …
