The Rhamnales Of Wisconsin: A Taxonomic Study, Richard W. Pohl
The Rhamnales Of Wisconsin: A Taxonomic Study, Richard W. Pohl
Bachelors’ Theses
The extensive taxonomic literature on the North American Vites was reviewed by L.H. Bailey (3) in 1934. Among the earlier writers, Major John Le Conte published "An Enumeration of the Vines of North America" (32) in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia for 1852-1853. Dr. George Engelmann of St. Louis published a short review of the North American grapes in the American Naturalist for August,1868. He mentioned ten species, giving formal descriptions for none, and commented upon the work of Rafinesque, who had attempted to describe the North American species of Vitis about fifty years previously, …

A Study Of The Structure Of Hair As A Means Of Mammal Identification, Earl R. Oyer
A Study Of The Structure Of Hair As A Means Of Mammal Identification, Earl R. Oyer
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The hair of small and medium sized mammals is often found in the stomachs, feces and pellets of predators , for example in the stomachs and feces of coyotes and in the pellets regurgitated by hawks and owls. These pellets produced by hawks and owls and the feces of mammalian predators are the undigested residue of what these animals have eaten. If the hair from these sources can be identified, then much desirable information concerning the food of predators can be obtained. The purpose of this study has been to determine whether or not such identification is possible.
Anatomy And Histology Of The Digestive Tract Of A Deep-Sea Fish Coelorhynchus Carminatus, Elly M. Jacobsen
Anatomy And Histology Of The Digestive Tract Of A Deep-Sea Fish Coelorhynchus Carminatus, Elly M. Jacobsen
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
This paper deals with the anatomy and histology of the digestive tube of one of the grenadiers or rat-tails, Coelorhynchus carminatus (Goode), as classified by Jordan & Evermann (1896).1 Many studies on the structure of the digestive tracts of fishes have been made in the past, and pioneer work in the teleost group was done by Valatour in 1861, Pillet in 1894 on the Pleuronectidae, and Gulland in 1898 on the salmon. More recent studies have been made by Greene (1912) on the king salmon, Blake 2 (1930) on the sea bass, and Rogick (1931) on the minnow.

The Aboriginal Utilization Of The Small Cacti In The American Southwest, Theodore Norris
Biology ETDs
The aim of this paper shall be, not simply to catalog the aboriginal uses of cacti in the Southwest, but to attempt to show their value to the aborigines as food, in general, and medical uses, ceremonial import, and their significance in myth and legend, in short, the place they occupied in southwestern life.
The Spinal Nerves And Spinal Cord Of The Frog, Laverne A. Penn
The Spinal Nerves And Spinal Cord Of The Frog, Laverne A. Penn
Bachelors’ Theses
The common grass frog, Rana pipiens as wall as the bull frog, Rana catesbiana have served during many decades as material from which both the student of zoology and the investigator in biological problems have gathered valuable information about the anatomy and physiology of the common systems. Among these systems the central, peripheral, and sympathetic nervous system plays a coordinating role, because of the ramifying nature of its organization. It is the purpose of this thesis to investigate the gross and histological structure of these branches known as spinal nerves. When one inspects the literature on the nervous system of …
The Use Of Kerosene Sprays For The Control Of The Dandelion, Robert William Hanks
The Use Of Kerosene Sprays For The Control Of The Dandelion, Robert William Hanks
Biology ETDs
One of the most persistant weeds found in New Mexico lawns is the common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber). In Albuquerque, where this study was made, most lawns are of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), a poor competitor against the inroads of the dandelion. However, some lawns are of Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon pers.), which, with its thick and vigorous turf, is a better competitor with the dandelion. The writer has observed, as Dittmer also found, that the turf of Bermuda grass on the campus of the University of New Mexico will crowd out or prevent the entrance of dandelions, while …

Some Coccogoneales Common To The Vicinity Of Milwaukee, Joseph John Valenti
Some Coccogoneales Common To The Vicinity Of Milwaukee, Joseph John Valenti
Bachelors’ Theses
The Cyanophyceae, a group of plants which are commonly known as the Blue-Green Algae, have a characteristic blue-green color due to a green pigment-chlorophyl, with which there is associated a blue pigment, phycocyanin. The Cyanophyceae are found everywhere on fresh salt water, on damp soil, rocks, bark, etc. These are among the simplest and lowest of all green plants. The plant consists of a single cell, but in most species these cells tend to adhere in colonies. These algae are able to grow at a higher temperature than can any other algae.
The Fresh-Water Sponges Of Wisconsin, James Russell Neidhoefer
The Fresh-Water Sponges Of Wisconsin, James Russell Neidhoefer
Bachelors’ Theses
The fresh-water sponges were observed but not recognized as animals at a very early period. The early investigators thought they were plants; later workers, colonial protozoa. In 1696, Leonard Plukenet first made public mention of them; and later, in i745, Linnaeus described them as Spongia and made mention of their, "globuli". After Linnaeus the term Spongia changed many times until, in 1816, Lamarck introduced the generic name Spongilla.
A Photographic Study Of The Musculature Of The Dog, Francis Joseph Millen
A Photographic Study Of The Musculature Of The Dog, Francis Joseph Millen
Bachelors’ Theses
In this thesis the author has endeavored to construct a realistic study of the muscles of the domesticated dog. It has not been his purpose to discover anything new, but rather to make a complete study and outline of the more important muscles of the dog's hind limb.
For references the author has selected two widely known comparative anatomy books. In order that a more complete understanding be had of the muscles themselves, their morphology and physiology, and their orientation, the author also employed the use of several smaller texts of lesser renown. A list of the texts used can …
The Muscles Of The Forelimb Of Canis Familiaris, Charles G. Wilber
The Muscles Of The Forelimb Of Canis Familiaris, Charles G. Wilber
Bachelors’ Theses
In the study of the anatomy of the vertebrates, there has been much work done and a large number of the forms have been studied with great thoroughness. Among the domesticated animals this is particularly true. The students of the veterinary sciences have given us a deep insight into the structure and function of the mammalian body. This is most certainly true in the case of the dog. The species Canis familiaris has been used for many years in the studies of physiology and surgery. However, it is also true that a plenitude of literature relative to the anatomy of …
The Lungs And Respiration In The Frog, Peter P. Strassburg
The Lungs And Respiration In The Frog, Peter P. Strassburg
Bachelors’ Theses
In a wide sense, respiration is sometimes defined as the gaseous exchange constantly taking place between an organism and its environment. Essentially it is concerned with the intake of oxygen and the output of carbon dioxide but it also includes any other gas exchange that might occur. Small organisms take oxygen directly from the air or from the watery medium surrounding them into all parts of their structures. They also give off carbon dioxide from all their parts directly into the surrounding medium. They can do this successfully because they are small enough to have every cell in direct or …
Pancreas Of The Frog, Henry C. Boyer
Pancreas Of The Frog, Henry C. Boyer
Bachelors’ Theses
The pancreas has long been a subject of interest and speculation. It forms a favorable object for the study of secretory cells in general and has been used by various investigators who have studied the minute structure of the pancreas cell in relation to the secretory processes. Besides being a very active digestive gland it is the source of insulin; so that it is not surprising to find a vast amount of literature on the double function of the pancreas in general.
The Ovary Of The Frog, Wyman O. Bergner
The Ovary Of The Frog, Wyman O. Bergner
Bachelors’ Theses
All living organisms, under proper conditions, are able to reproduce an organism of its own kind by the natural function of its reproductive system. Except in such cases where reproduction is assexual, there are always tow individuals, male and female, which produce two elements called the ovum and spermatozoa. In the vertebrate kingdom, the sperm unites with the ovum to form the new individual. This fertilized ovum is commonly referred to as the zygote, which produces the embryo from which the new individual is ultimately formed.
In this work the ovary is studied from several viewpoints: 1) anatomical; the size, …
Development Of Tissues Of Aesculus Hippocastanum, L., Robert E. Esser
Development Of Tissues Of Aesculus Hippocastanum, L., Robert E. Esser
Bachelors’ Theses
A few horse-chestnuts carried to the University one day in the fall as the nuts ripened, supplied some of the materials for this thesis. The work commenced at once with the gathering of a large supply of seeds. Attempts were made to reach the literature on the subject but failed, because, apparently there has been no work done on this plant in recent times as is shown by an almost complete absence of literature on the subject of the anatomy. Hence, nearly all references will be of a general nature.
The Operating Efficiency Of The Albuquerque Sewage Disposal Plant From A Bacteriological Standpoint, Rebecca Jane Menaul
The Operating Efficiency Of The Albuquerque Sewage Disposal Plant From A Bacteriological Standpoint, Rebecca Jane Menaul
Biology ETDs
This study of sewage disposal plants has traced the development of sewage plants from an ancient and simple origin to the highly complex plants of today. Sewage was first disposed of by diluting the waste products into a large stream of water or by merely burying the sewage. As populations have increased, earlier methods have of necessity been discarded and a gradual evolution in the efficiency of methods of disposal has taken place, until today a modern plant may be operated in such a way as to leave the sewage free from all pathogenic bacteria and parasites.

Studies In Breaking The Rest Period Of Grass Plants By Treatments With Potassium Thiocyante And In Stimulating Growth With Artificial Light, Harold R. Shepherd
Studies In Breaking The Rest Period Of Grass Plants By Treatments With Potassium Thiocyante And In Stimulating Growth With Artificial Light, Harold R. Shepherd
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
There has developed a need for a practical means of artificially breaking the rest period and of stimulating the growth of grasses so that sods can be procured early in the fall before freezing weather, brought into the greenhouse, and forced early to make an abundant vegetative growth. This need suggested the study of which this paper is the report, namely to discover whether or not the rest period of native grasses can be broken by treatment with potassium thiocyanate and their growth stimulated by artificial light supplemental to winter daylight.

The Anatomy Of The Musculature Of The Necturus, Carl Henry Zeuner
The Anatomy Of The Musculature Of The Necturus, Carl Henry Zeuner
Bachelors’ Theses
This paper is intended to discuses the dissection and complete anatomy of the musculature of the Necturus. The Nacturus was chosen, as it is the most characteristic of the order Urodela and it shows many fish-lite adaptations. However, there are definite and distinct changes over the muscles of the fish. The Necturus has walking, legs requiring muscles between the individual parts of the limbs as well as between the limbs and the body itself as is the oase in the fish.
Pituitary Gland Of Frog, Harold Joseph
Pituitary Gland Of Frog, Harold Joseph
Bachelors’ Theses
The endocrine or ductless gland system is one of the most important systems in the body of the vertebrates. The glands which comprise this system are the pancreas, which produces the insulin hormone; the thyroid, which secretes the throxin hormone; the parathyroid which produces the hormone known as the para-thormone; the adrenal glands which secretes cortin and adrenalin; the pineal gland about which very little is known; and the pituitary gland which produces many hormones, two of which, tethelin and pituitrin, are of great physiological importance. These hormones pass directly into the blood or lymph vessels and enter the circulatory …
Kidney Of The Frog, Felix Taubman
Kidney Of The Frog, Felix Taubman
Bachelors’ Theses
The frog has been used exclusively in both high school and college as the main source of experimental biological and zoological studies. Because it is so easily obtained and so finely adapted to our purposes, we chose it as the specimen upon which to do our thesis work. Much has been done experimentally on the kidneys with the frog. The purpose of this thesis is to present a general view of the external and microscopic anatomy of the frog kidney and with this as a groundwork to present the problems of secretion; whether secretion is carried on by the renal …
