Studies Of Increment, Height-Weight, And Moisture Content Of Important Western Kansas Grasses, John Launchbaugh May 1948

Studies Of Increment, Height-Weight, And Moisture Content Of Important Western Kansas Grasses, John Launchbaugh

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

A logical approach to the question of how much forage is taken by livestock would be, it seems, to study first the growth habits of the important species of p:i.sture and range grasses in the areas where they are used. The purpose of this report, therefore, was to study the development of several species of perennial grasses in the mixed prairie of west-central Kamas from near the beginning of the grazing season until the grasses had reached maturity.

The Ecology Of A Pasture In The Dakota Sandstone Formation In Ellsworth County, Kansas, Byron O. Blair May 1948

The Ecology Of A Pasture In The Dakota Sandstone Formation In Ellsworth County, Kansas, Byron O. Blair

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The vast area of prairie of the United States has long been known as the "feeding grounds" for herbivorous animals. In the past, the standard of living of the people of grassland regions has been measured largely by the ability of the native ranges to produce ·vegetation sufficient to maintain economical livestock production. It has become apparent that if our desired living standard is to be maintained, we must direct our efforts toward a program by the most rapid and efficient means possible, which will bring economic stability to the seventeen million acres of grassland in the Great Plains region. …

The Construction Procedure Of The Saline River Habitat Group In The Fort Hays Kansas State College Museum, William Raymond Eastman May 1948

The Construction Procedure Of The Saline River Habitat Group In The Fort Hays Kansas State College Museum, William Raymond Eastman

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The development of the museum wild life habitat group in recent years has created much public interest here in the College museum many people have expressed a desire to see such a habitat group related strictly to Kansas , particularly Western Kansas . The year of such a group was not particularly expressed, but as preliminary visions developed, it seemed only reasonable that the public would enjoy a glimpse of Kansas in the days when it was making early history . Thus it was decided to design and execute a life-sized habitat depicting the ecological relationship s found between the …

Study Of The Nuclear Behavior In The Basidia And Basidiospores Of Schizophyllum Commune Fries, Howard George Ehrlich May 1948

Study Of The Nuclear Behavior In The Basidia And Basidiospores Of Schizophyllum Commune Fries, Howard George Ehrlich

Bachelors’ Theses

Schizophyllum commune Fries is a member of the Hymeno mycetes. This genus has long intrigued mycologists because of the peculiar "spliit gills'' it characteristically possesses. For a long time, however, not much importance was attached to the fungus until it was reported from many parts or the world and its. pathogenicity as a wood-destroying agaric established. Despite these facts relatively little is known about the fungus. Perhaps the phase of development most completely described was the development of the "gills", Essig (1922). Because of the location of the hymenium and stipe attachment, Essig (1922) suggested that the fungus more properly …

A Curriculum Study Of The Biological Science Courses In The Secondary Schools And College Of Utah During 1947-48, Merrill H. Gunnell May 1948

A Curriculum Study Of The Biological Science Courses In The Secondary Schools And College Of Utah During 1947-48, Merrill H. Gunnell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

At the present time there is a feeling among biologists in Utah that there should be improvement in biological science courses and course sequence to better fill the needs of the non technical student. There are many students filling group requirements with an accumulation of courses which may not provide them with the more important fundamental concepts and principles in biology. Information concerning these courses in high schools and colleges in necessary to provide a basis for curriculum revision in the field. Such information should be useful in evaluating the present system and suggesting modifications. Because of the need for …

Insect Pests And Predators In Relation To Alfalfa Seed Setting In Southern Alberta And The Effects On These Insects Of Three Chlorinated Hydrocarbons, Gordon A. Hobbs

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa-insect investigations, because of necessity, had been neglected in the province of Alberta during the war years. Work was resumed on this project in the spring of 1946 by the writer.

So much progress has been made in the field of insect pest control since the advent of war-born chlorinated hydrocarbons, that it was thought advisable to design an experiment which would test under Alberta conditions the results obtained in Utah where most of this type of research had been previously carried out, and would thus serve to bring investigations in this part of Canada up to date.

It is …

Effects On Different Intensities Of Utilization Upon The Underground Parts Of Short Grasses In West Central Kansas, Farrel Branson Jul 1947

Effects On Different Intensities Of Utilization Upon The Underground Parts Of Short Grasses In West Central Kansas, Farrel Branson

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Work on root systems of forage plants has indicated that a knowledge of root relationships is fully as important in determining the actual conditions of ranges or pastures as is knowledge of the effects of grazing upon aboveground portions of plants. This is especially true in arid or semiarid regions since plants of these areas are frequently subjected to long periods of drought, high temperatures, and high wind velocities. Some xeric plants have a thickened cuticular layer, stomates that open only at night, and other mechanisms that prevent loss of water that is absorbed by the roots. However, in plants …

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Musculature And Osseous Systems Of The Kangaroo Rat, Dipodomys Ordii, Virgil Mathis Jul 1947

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Musculature And Osseous Systems Of The Kangaroo Rat, Dipodomys Ordii, Virgil Mathis

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The kangaroo rats constitute the only genus, Dipodomys, of the subfamily Heteromyinae, now extant . There is fossil evidence of two other genera which are now extinct. The kangaroo rat, Dipodomys ordii richardsoni, is one of the common rodents of western Kansas . According to Hibbard (3, p. 76), "Its range extends northeastward along the Kansas river into Riley County." These animals are easily distinguished from other rodents by their long tail, long hind legs and feet, small hands, fur lined external cheek pouches, and their saltating method of locomotion. These rodents are seldom seen by the casual observer, being …

An Ecological Study Of The Pocket Gopher In An Sandy Loam Area Of Ellis County, Kansas., Benjamin Mosier Jul 1947

An Ecological Study Of The Pocket Gopher In An Sandy Loam Area Of Ellis County, Kansas., Benjamin Mosier

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This thesis is an ecological study of the pocket gopher in a sandy loam area of Ellis County, Kansas. The economic importance of the pocket gopher varies with the type of land and with its use. It is rather obvious that the economic importance of the gopher changed with the widespread advent of the settlers into Western United States. From the viewpoint of extensive agricultural practices, the pocket gopher must be considered a menace on cultivated lands. On non-agricultural districts the condition is in general reversed. Most ecologists recognize a definite benefit from burrowing animals on wild land.

An Analytic Comparative Study Of Certain Biology Textbooks Used At Secondary School Level, Joseph E. Rankin Jul 1947

An Analytic Comparative Study Of Certain Biology Textbooks Used At Secondary School Level, Joseph E. Rankin

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Biology is the science of life and therefore deserves every consideration in the high school curriculum. The world today is making an extensive and intelligent use of biology in solving problems of personal and social significance. Scientists have discovered that certain phases of the subject are more important to man's welfare than others. For this reason it is essential that biology be presented to our high school students not as isolated facts, but in relation to the problem of living. Through this science of living things, the student can gain a healthy respect for facts and for conclusions based on …

Pastures Of Western Kansas In Relation To Intensity Of Utilization In Past Years, Gerald W. Tomanek May 1947

Pastures Of Western Kansas In Relation To Intensity Of Utilization In Past Years, Gerald W. Tomanek

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Short grass pastures vary in their ability to produce forage for livestock consumption. One of the reasons for this difference is a variation in the degree of utilization in past years. Forage production of short grass ranges has been reduced to about one-half after only a few decades of improper grazing; therefore the problem of proper utilization is becoming more important every year (Forest Service, 1936). When the settlers first came to western Kansas they found an almost complete cover of native vegetation and during the first few years only a small portion of the range land was cultivated. With …

An Adaptation Of The Feulgen Reaction For The Staining Of The Salivary Gland Chromosomes Of Drosophila, Herman C. Inlow May 1947

An Adaptation Of The Feulgen Reaction For The Staining Of The Salivary Gland Chromosomes Of Drosophila, Herman C. Inlow

Bachelors’ Theses

The discovering of the genetic value of Drosophila salivary gland chromosomes by Painter, Heitz, and Bauer in 1934 posed a problem of technique to the microtomist that is still being improved upon and widened. The staining of these chromosomes fer better study and to determine their properties, both chemical and physical, has been the object of intense research. This paper is the result of my work in connection with this subject.

A Cytological Study Of The Salivary Gland Chromosomes Of The Attached-X Variety Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Jack Schull Aug 1946

A Cytological Study Of The Salivary Gland Chromosomes Of The Attached-X Variety Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Jack Schull

Bachelors’ Theses

The detailed study of -the salivary chromosomes of the Diptera has been of great importance in substantiating cytologically the theories of genetics. A noteworthy example of the importance of cytological study is the non-disjunctive phenomenon which has occurred on at least several occasions in the strain of Drosophila melanogaster. Bridges (1913) was the first to report nondisjunction of sex chromosomes which was an important confirmation of the chromosome theory. L. V. Morgan (1922) used the cytological study of the germ cells of Drosophila melanogaster to prove that there was no disjunction of the sex chromosomes in the attached-X strain.

A Comparison Of The Autonomic Nervous System Of The Cat And The Pigeon, William P. Mccarthy Aug 1946

A Comparison Of The Autonomic Nervous System Of The Cat And The Pigeon, William P. Mccarthy

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to describe the autonomic nervous system of the cat and pigeon and to compare them as to their structure. This comparison will consist in noting the differences and points of similarity between the two animals. The autonomic nervous system of the cat is more complex than that of the pigeon and for that reason the comparison will consist in pointing out the parts of the autonomic nervous system present in the cat, but which are not found in the pigeon. In noting the points of similarity only the most important will be treated.
