Embracing Change in International Program Planning: Strategies for Financing International Programs in Times of Economic Turbulence

Law schools are being compelled to examine their ability to begin and continue international programs, and to market programs aggressively to keep them viable. Should a law school start a new program at this time? Should a law school discontinue any programs, or offset losses in programs with gains from other programs? Presentation will encourage an open discussion of strategies for developing or continuing economically feasible programs in these difficult times.

Embrace Change By Embracing the Library!

With budgetary concerns abounding in almost every area of legal education, now more than ever is the time to exploit the existing synergies in your law school when thinking of how to enhance and support your international programs without undertaking unnecessary cost. Law school libraries are equipped not only with resources that can inform and educate students on the legal systems and cultures of other countries, but also with qualified librarians who are able to provide research training for students before they depart. This panel will discuss ways in which the library can help …

Rethinking Overseas Legal Experiences from the Top Down and Bottom Up

With the current strains and pressures that law schools are facing today, the new reality is that beloved programs are being cut--from clinics to moot programs to overseas programs. What is the justification for keeping law school “study abroad” programs? If there are compelling reasons for international legal education, who needs to be convinced and what is the most effective way of doing that?

Discussants:

Amy Sugin, Assistant Dean of Graduate and International Programs, Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law

Converging Trends In Legal Education: Globalization Meets Experiential Education

Over the last decade, legal educators have increasingly recognized the need to prepare students for practice in an era of ever increasing globalization. More recently, changes in the legal market have imposed greater pressure to provide more experiential education for our students. To many, these trends create conflicting pressures. This panel will address that challenge and the means by which these trends can be complementary rather than competing, through innovative programs where students have transformative experiences in international legal practice.

What's New About The New Normal: The Evolving Market For New Lawyers In The 21st Century, Bernard A. Burk Apr 2014

What's New About The New Normal: The Evolving Market For New Lawyers In The 21st Century, Bernard A. Burk

Florida State University Law Review

Everyone agrees that job prospects for many new law graduates have been poor for the last several years; there is rather less consensus on whether, when, how, or why that may change as the economy recovers from the Great Recession. This Article analyzes historical and current trends in the job market for new lawyers in an effort to predict how that market may evolve.

The Article derives quantitative measurements of the proportion of law graduates over the last thirty years who have obtained initial employment for which law school serves as rational substantive preparation (“Law Jobs”). In comparing entry-level hiring …

Beyond The Fakultas'S Four Walls: Linking Education, Practice, And The Legal Profession, Stephen A. Rosenbaum Apr 2014

Beyond The Fakultas'S Four Walls: Linking Education, Practice, And The Legal Profession, Stephen A. Rosenbaum

Washington International Law Journal

More than fifty years after the first post-colonial Southeast Asian regional conference on legal education, commentators and educators do not necessarily agree on the appropriate curricular balance between theory, doctrine, and practice, or what role the government should play in directing the orientation of legal studies and careers in Indonesia’s law schools. The author argues in favor of legal education that is rich in experiential learning and integrates the involvement of practitioners and doctrinal faculty. This objective may be a relatively new reality in Indonesia, but also one that needs revitalization in other Southeast Asian nations and beyond. This article …

Teaching The Methods Of White-Collar Practice: Investigatios, Roger Fairfax

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

When Ijoined the George Washington University Law School [GW] faculty after practice as a federal prosecutor and white-collar criminal defense attorney, I quickly learned that a GW law student interested in exploring white-collar crime had a great many courses from which to choose. Several of my full-time colleagues teach courses that cover various topics relevant to white-collar crime, including a computer crimes course, a course in criminal tax litigation, and courses on anti-corruption in government contracting and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act [FCPA]. GW is also fortunate to have a dedicated and talented adjunct faculty, which includes a former senior …

Reflective Practice In Legal Education: The Stages Of Reflection, Timothy Casey Apr 2014

Reflective Practice In Legal Education: The Stages Of Reflection, Timothy Casey

Faculty Scholarship

Experiential legal education programs include reflection as an explicit learning outcome. Although many teachers and students have seen the value of reflection, few have studied the process of reflection. Drawing from research in the fields of cognitive development, reflective judgment, and moral reasoning, this article presents an organizational model for teaching reflection in six stages. The Stages of Reflection model provides teachers and students with a deeper understanding of the process of reflection, and creates a pathway for the development of reflective practice.

Profile - The Noguchi Museum, James Hagy

Rooftops Project

Few not-for-profit cultural or historic sites can be traced through a single thread, from heritage in an unlikely industrial setting in Queens; its conversion to workspace for the creation, staging and deployment of art throughout the world; its rededication by the living artist as a museum space while still a working gallery; and ultimately its preservation as a permanent cultural destination. At the Noguchi Museum, members and visitors can appreciate artist Isamu Noguchi’s full body of work in many media, enjoy the tranquility of galleries and gardens in a profoundly close-by urban setting, and understand the context in which that …

Profile - Not-For-Profit As Urban Neighbor: Groundswell, James Hagy, Scott Haggmark

Rooftops Project

Few not-for-profit organizations can claim to have made a dramatic, permanent, outdoor visual impact on more than 450 city blocks through the five boroughs of New York City. Groundswell has done just that. As part of a continuing series looking at not-for-profits as urban neighbors, The Rooftop Project’s Scott Haggmark and Professor James Hagy visit with Amy Sananman and Sharon Polli at Groundswell’s Brooklyn headquarters.

Impact Of Uniform Laws On The Teaching Of Trusts And Estates, David M. English Apr 2014

Impact Of Uniform Laws On The Teaching Of Trusts And Estates, David M. English

Faculty Publications

Beginning in 1969 with the approval of the Uniform Probate Code (UPC), uniform laws have had a major impact on the teaching of the basic Trusts and Estates course. This is not the place to list the close to thirty uniform acts relating to Trusts and Estates that have been approved. Rather, this Article will focus on the impact that uniform laws have had on the content of what is taught in the Trusts and Estates course. Uniform laws are not written in a vacuum. Like other legislative enactments, they are the product of societal changes and changes in legal …
