Cross Cultural Reflections: Teaching The Charter To Americans, Jamie Cameron
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
In this article, the author discusses a course in Comparative Constitutional Jurisprudence that she taught at Cornell Law School in the winter semester of 1989. She is particularly interested in the way this class of American students responded to the Supreme Court of Canada's interpretation of the Charter. She presents her reflections on differences between Canadian and American constitutional culture through a discussion of the decisions in The Motor Vehicle Reference, R. v. Morgentaler, and The French Language Case.

Student Practice In Colorado, Robert M. Hardaway
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Both the University of Denver College of Law and the University of Colorado Law School have active student law clinics. Law students in these clinics receive academic credit for representing indigent clients under the supervision of a faculty member or staff attorney. Students in the two clinics are permitted to practice in the Colorado courts pursuant to one of the nation's most liberal student practice rules.
Student Representation Of Indigent Defendants And The Sixth Amendment: On A Collision Course, Robert M. Hardaway
Student Representation Of Indigent Defendants And The Sixth Amendment: On A Collision Course, Robert M. Hardaway
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
This article will review the parallel patterns of development of clinical education and the sixth amendment, highlighting areas in which the practices of the former either conflict, or contain the potential for conflict with the latter. An analysis will be made of the present legal status of law student representation of indigent criminal defendants, with reference primarily to constitutional and sixth amendment considerations, but also to such related matters as the confidentiality of student-client communications, law student professional responsibility, and the applicability to students of state bar disciplinary rules. Finally, guidelines will be proposed regarding the proper scope of student …

Henry Moore Bates, Roscoe Pound
Michigan Law Review
It has been my uniform practice never to read from a manuscript or use notes when I am speaking to an audience, but in speaking of so old and dear a friend I feel a certain inhibition of emotion that stands in the way of an adequate oral speech. Moreover, when I think of Dean Bates' unswerving adherence to exact, accurate statement, his abhorrence of all exaggeration, of all overstatement, I feel that he would not be satisfied with one who followed the relatively loose method of oral statement instead of adhering to a carefully and meticulously prepared manuscript for …

The Contribution Of Thomas M. Cooley To Bryce's "American Commonwealth", Everett S. Brown
The Contribution Of Thomas M. Cooley To Bryce's "American Commonwealth", Everett S. Brown
Michigan Law Review
In the preface to The American Commonwealth, James Bryce acknowledged his indebtedness to numerous friends who, in one way or other, aided him in the writing of his book. First on this list is the name of Thomas M. Cooley. An examination of the text and footnotes of The American Commonwealth shows that Bryce was well acquainted with Cooley's published works, especially his Constitutional Limitations and his General Principles of Constitutional Law, which he quoted frequently with approval and respect. Also one finds six references to letters from Judge Cooley or to observations made directly by him to Bryce. But …

Constitutional Law: 1899-1900 Second Year, Donald Frank Matheson
Thompson Rare Book Collection
This notebook was used by D. Frank Matheson, an alumnus of Dalhousie Law School, Class of 1901, in his second year Constitutional Law class.
The Matheson Notebooks are a collection of seven bound notebooks used by Frank Matheson during his time at Dalhousie School of Law between 1898 and 1901. In 2018, they were found in the basement of a Lunenburg law firm and donated to Schulich School of Law. “In taking up for brief review the action of the convention in framing, and that of the people of the Union in adopting the Federal Constitution ninety years ago, we should be able after such a lapse of time, and in view of our diversified experience under it, to deal with it in a spirit of dispassionate criticism, and without boasting or unreasonable exultation. Yet we may perhaps truly say that the act itself was the most notable in government-making of which history bears record….”
