Factors That Affect Recidivism Of Offenders On Electronic Monitoring In Norfolk, Virginia, Michael P. O'Toole

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate which factors impact offenders' recidivism on electronic monitoring. Research on electronic monitoring has mainly concentrated on individual program completion rates. A review of the available literature on electronic monitoring reveals few evaluative studies focusing on offender recidivism. No long term recidivism studies are available for electronic monitoring. The present research reviews 277 offenders five years after completing their electronic monitoring sentence in Norfolk, Virginia. The following factors as they may relate to offenders' recidivism, while on electronic monitoring are measured: current offense, prior conviction, offenders' age, sentence length, and employment history. Analyses …

The Globalisation Of Crime, Mark Findlay Jul 1999

The Globalisation Of Crime, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

As with many emergent themes in today's society, globalisation is simple and complex. Put simply, it is the collapsing of time and space; the process whereby through mass communication, multi-national commerce, internationalised politics, and transnational regulation we seem to be moving inexorably towards a single culture. The more complex interpretation of globalisation is as paradox - wherein there are as many pressures driving us in the direction of the common culture as those keeping us apart.

Views From The Drugs Summit, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The jury is still out on whether the Drugs Summit was a political set piece. The Opposition participants regularly accused the Government of just that. Without doubt, however, it was the reaction of the Opposition which was orchestrated and pre-conceived.

Competing On Quality Of Care: The Need To Develop A Competition Policy For Health Care Markets, William M. Sage, Peter J. Hammer Jul 1999

Competing On Quality Of Care: The Need To Develop A Competition Policy For Health Care Markets, William M. Sage, Peter J. Hammer

Faculty Scholarship

As American health care moves from a professionally dominated to a marketdominated model, concerns have been voiced that competition, once unleashed, will focus on price to the detriment of quality. Although quality has been extensively analyzed in health services research, the role of quality in competition policy has not been elucidated. While economists may theorize about non-price competition, courts in antitrust cases often follow simpler models of competition based on price and output, either ignoring quality as a competitive dimension or assuming that it will occur in tandem with price competition. This unsystematic approach is inadequate for the formulation of …

The Catholic University as Promise and Project: Reflections in a Jesuit Idiom

Here it is. Michael Buckley, S.J. is a Professor of Theology and Director of the Jesuit Institute at Boston College. His new book on The Catholic University as Promise and Project presents a full-orbed and forceful alternative to ECE. Although the chapters were all previously published as separate essays, the book is a coherent, if not quite systematic, vision of what Buckley calls a "Catholic, Jesuit" university. This vision, or one very much like it, has been the silent premise of opposition to ECE. Meditate a moment on …

National Health Policy Forum

Addressing the premise of an inappropriate skewing of the U.S. medical education system toward specialty medicine, this issue brief compares and contrasts the U.S. and Canadian graduate medical education (GME) systems, including the organization and financing of each. The issue brief also explores various lessons that might be learned from the Canadian GME system, such as full integration of primary care and GME and the use of incentives to achieve desired policy goals.

The Erotics Of Virtue, Kenneth Anderson

Book Reviews

(Obituary Essay on Dominique Aury/Pauline Reage, Author of Story of O) This essay originally appeared in the LA Times book review as an obituary essay on Dominique Aury, author (under the name Pauline Reage) of the pornographic classic Story of O. The essay argues that Story of O is a fairy tale in which the heroine, O, seeks to escape from modernity's enforced virtues of equality, freedom, and choice into a world of the virtues of hierarchy - the eroticized analogues of religious submission. The novel is driven forward by a downward spiral in which O seeks to surrender herself …
