It was once thought that a lawyer's vocation was chiefly to serve his clients, so that he might bring fame and fortune to himself. The profession of law was considered only a means of livelihood, merely more difficult than clerking and more remunerative, sometimes, than carpentry. To require study for the law was thought an unfair preclusion of embryo breadwinners from an adventure with that particular occupation. Fortunately, the public mind has changed; the practice of law is no longer only a means of livelihood, but has become an important agency in promoting civilization. Some one has likened law to …

Admission To The Bar, Edwin C. Goddard
Articles
This article is written in the belief that the hour is here when some changes in admissions to the bar should be urged and urged again, when some things often thought and discussed in certain assemblies should be openly and frankly talked over with the profession at large.

Training For A Profession--Law, Ralph W. Aigler

So long as human conduct and relations must accord with pre-established and determinable rules, the study of law, and the practice thereof, will be of absorbing interest. When we consider futher that our government is one of law, and the the positisions of highest responsibility therein are such that training in law is peculiarly desirable, it is not at all surprising that many young men have taken to the legal profession.

Legal Education, Henry M. Bates
Legal Education, Henry M. Bates
Articles
Bates describes the growth of law schools and the changing nature of legal education: "The outstanding fact in legal education in this country during the past twenty-five years is the shift from the law office to the law school as the avenue of approach to the bar.... This increase in the number of institutions teaching law and in the number of students preparing for the bar in this way makes on the whole for improvement, but the ointment is not without its flies..."

The Register Vol. 2, No. 4, 11/1917, Suffolk University Law School
Limited-run Student Newspapers
The Suffolk Law School Register, the first student publication, was published between 1915 and 1921. It includes images of early law school people and places and also includes class notes and anecdotes about Suffolk’s students and alumni; a history of the school, written by founder Gleason Archer; and articles about law. The Register functions much like a yearbook does today, capturing the who, what, where and when of the school, both inside and outside the classroom. Archer’s serialized history provides a first person narrative of his founding of the school and its early growth. The articles about the practice and …

Historical Treatises
Excerpt from the preface:
The work of preparing this volume has developed out of all proportion to what I anticipated in the outset. The great trouble under our system is that there are so many things that are not fixed and determined. Our system of pleading provides that a party must plainly, fully and distinctly set forth his cause of action, and this leaves the form to be passed upon under the discretion of about one hundred trial judges in the City and Superior Courts, and this discretion, in many instances, is controlled by individual and particular ideas. For this …

Historical Treatises
Excerpt from the preface:
I decided that my labors would prove most useful if I attempted to write a practical, rather than a learned treatise on the subject. While the subject is one that might bear much fruit under learned treatment, still what the present moment most demands is a practical handbook which will inform the profession and the officers who are to administer the law what to do and how to do it, when a landowner comes seeking to register his land.
There has been no effort at style, except that I have striven to state matters in a …

IN our day and countery the bar examiner is the St. Peter of the legal heaven. He to whom the legal St. Peter openeth not must go below and live without the legal brotherhood. It was not always so. Not so long ago the admission gate (or bar) was kept by any member of the bench. This meant it was not kept at all, for no one was denied admission, and there is still at least one of the states of our Union where every voter of the state of good moral character has the constitutional right to admission as …

The Death of Professor Knowlton - The loss to the Law School and to his colleagues of the law faculty in the death of Jerome Cyril Knowlton cannot be expressed. For thirty-one years, the longest period of active service ever given by any man to this Law School, Mr. Knowlton was an effective factor in the development of the institution and in the moulding of the character and the legal ideas and ideals of the thousands of graduates who have passed through the Law School into the service of community and state and country, at the bar, upon the bench, …
